Genital warts

I didn't have them before the beginning of the pregnancy till my 27 weeks I found two.i didn't have them at all that's why I thought it was weird so I went to my ob and she said its common and they will go away on its own. Is any other woman having the same problem?

I wonder if you mean skin tags. Genital warts usually come in patches from what I understand as in multiple small ones in an area.

  • Yea that's what she said as well I asked for a cream but she didn't want to give me one she said they would go away on its own(skin tags)

These two things are different (genital warts vs skin tags). Obviously genital warts are a more serious issue. Skin tags can be annoying but are common during pregnancy.

Here is a link to a site explaining their differences. https://healthresearchfunding.org/difference-skin-tags-genital-warts/

ETA : @kynbar5 we wrote almost the same things/same time! Haha
  • Yeah because she said it was common and she did a pap at the beginning of the pregnancy so wouldn't it come out if I had something? I was worried that it was something to worry about but she didn't want to give me a creme if it was something to worry about.

Ok, yeah it's warts or skin tags? Unfortunately you can get an std at any time so if your pap came back clear in the beginning and you contracted warts later on then the earlier pap wouldn't have shown them.

  • I'm pretty sure she said it was skin tags but just to make sure I'll call her.but like I said it didn't seem to alarm her if it were std she would of probably given me a creme for or something but she didn't but in the safe side I'll give her a call. Thanks everyone you been helpful
  • I had genital warts last year. The virus can lay dormant in your body for some time before causing symptoms. I luckily fought off the virus but my midwife warned they can return during pregnancy as your immune system is weaker.
Thankfully for me they haven't come back. As previous posters have said, the strain of HPV that causes warts is NOT the same as the ones that cause cancer. I have been vaccinated against that type of HPV. Before I know what the warts were I believed they were skin tags, they look almost exactly the same. Warts tend to show up in clusters though, and they bleed quite a bit if you try and pull them off. I declined any treatment after one session of cryotherapy which was horrible, and they went away within a month.
Also Pap smears and STD tests do not test for HPV unless you have visible signs of the disease, e.g. Obvious warts or an irritated looking cervix. The only test for HPV is a blood test. I was never offered this.
  • Well... From this I learned that genital warts do look an awful lot like skin tags. Thanks Google.

  • If the doctor thought it was herpes, she would have had you tested for it, as active herpes
Infection can be dangerous for baby during birth. That said, you were also tested for STDs during your initial blood draw, and tested again later in pregnancy (I had it done when I did my glucose test).

Skin tags can grow at a faster rate during pregnancy, especially in areas that have increased blood flow, like your genitals. If they're not irritating or causing any problems, no reason to get them removed yet. I have some moles that grew during pregnancy (and some new ones that popped up), so I had them checked out by a dermatologist, and she said they were benign and didn't need to be removed unless they became irritated or interfered with something like breastfeeding. I'm sure your Dr could give you a referral if you're concerned about the growths.
  • If you have HPV...which would come back on pap results, you could have the strain that causes genital warts. The genital warts can go away on their own or you can have them removed by a doctor. She may not give you the cream during pregnancy. The warts themselves can/will go away depending on your choice of treatment but the HPV is there to stay. You need to go in, have her do a visual check.. She should be able to see them, and have her tell you if they are skin tags or genital warts. Also have a new pap just in case yyou've acquired anything since the last one. Ask that she include testing for HPV. If you come back positive for HPV I'd say its genital warts.
  • Wait. What? I'm so confused!
