Pumping exclusively?

This is probably a dumb question but I want practical tips and not everything I've found is..but how do you pump when you know your gonna be out of the house for an extended period(not work)? And how do you store it if baby isn't eating right then, do you bring a cooler everywhere? I'm just over a week pp and have pretty much been at home since then..

When I pumped for DS, I would bring a small cooler with blue ice packs when I had day trips for work (no fridge). For overnight trips I would just dump it, because I did not want to worry about the regulations to bring it on the plane (and I had a good freezer stash). Also based on what you are doing you may want to look at getting the converter so you can plug the pump in the car cigarette lighter.

  • I'm officially joining the pumping exclusively club. LO has a tongue and lip tie that keep her from latching effectively. That led to a couple stressful, tear filled days. Now that we are pumping, I'm in a much better place :) we can do it mommas!! Everyone has to do what works for them.

I felt this too but realized it was just my uterus contracting still. Mine went away at about 3.5 weeks
  • Is it possible for baby to cluster feed if I pump and feed her? Every day from around 5-10/11she just wants to be held and have a bottle or her pacifier which she spits out every 14 seconds then screams til we give it back. She eats 2-3 oz every 2-3 hours but the only thing that truely soothes her is when she eats. I don't want to keep offering a bottle then upset her stomach because she's overrating..

My LO (10 days old) does this too. She will root like she is hungry, I'll offer her the bottle, she'll take two or three gulps, spit out the bottle, so I'll burp her, and she'll be okay for 5-10 mins and even start to fall asleep and then she'll start rooting again and the cycle repeats until she falls into a deep sleep. It's only it the evening around 6ish. I googled it and this type of cluster feeding is normal and normally goes away around 6 weeks or so.
  • @ASalton1 that's good to know! My little will drink a whole bottle and I've offered more and she's still looking for food lol
  • @mcdoug211 also babies can't overeat. If they take in too much food or eat too fast, they spit up the excess.
  • Do you guys wake your LO to eat at night? It's been 4 hours since her last feeding, I'm pumping now but I plan to rouse her for a diaper change and to hopefully eat. In the info booklet my pedi gave us it says to not wake a sleeping baby at night, so I'm not sure what to do.

    Never!
Unless they are having trouble gaining I never wake a baby. If you were told to let them sleep let them sleep.

Well since we had such a terrible time trying to BF, she lost some weight. Still in the normal range though. LO ended waking up on her own and that was 4.5 hours between feeds. She is up again 2 hours later hungry again :) I'm going to call my pedi in the morning to make sure but that seems ok to me!

  • @beautyundefined I am with you on that one. I love my manual. If I'm ever too engorged I bring it into the shower and get the best pump
  • If I pump and put it in a bottle with a kid how long will it keep in my fridge?

@mcdoug211 I go by this info...

You have to find the section about collection and storage.

    There's no difference.
  • So I got a Medela Pump in style advance from our insurance but ended up renting a Symphony from the LC for a week. That would cost us 60.00/ month to rent. I really didn't want to pick up another bill. After some research I ordered the Spectra S1 which has amazing reviews, is hospital grade and is as good as the symphony. You can also order this little attachment that lets you use all the Medela accessories. Just FYI!

  • Help! I'm pretty sure I have an oversupply of breast milk. No matter how much I pump or feed my baby my boobs are constantly engorged and leaking. It's like I can never empty them. I tried only pumping what the baby need but I still keep producing way too much. Does anyone know how I can decrease my supply? I'm pretty miserable here my boobs hurt way too bad! :(

Slowly spread out the amount of time in between pumping and only pump for one letdown. It'll take a few days to slow it down but you should regulate after a while.
  • Who is still EP? I'm almost 3 weeks in and waking up for my middle of the night pumps is tough! I'm producing nearly 40 ounces per day though. It's tough being married to a pump, but it works for us and I really want to give LO breast milk.

I'm EP. I'm not waking up in the night to pump... although I think I need to start since I'm only getting 25 oz.

I'm tempted to quit daily. The schedule is brutal. I keep going though so he can get the benefits. I did quit pumping at night so I could sleep for more than an hour at a time.

When I first started EP I pumped every 3 hrs, even at night, then I was able to push it out farther.
  • Eight weeks- still pumping. I pump overnight- husband feeds, burps and changes while I pump. I think I am getting another plugged duct- sitting with a heating pad now and hopefully caught it before it turns to mastitis!
I am truly sick of it, but committed for now at least. Still have a goal of six months but we shall see
  • I pump every 2-3 hours during the day and every 4 at night. We put LO to bed around 9, she wakes up at 12-1am, 4-5am and then up for the day at 7am. So those are my overnight pump times. If DH has work the next day I only make him wake up the first "shift" to feed, change and put her back to bed then I handle the second shift of pumping, feeding and changing by myself. On weekends, he wakes up every time to feed. I feel overwhelmed a lot during the day. It seems like everything happens at the same time, I swear! :) I'm getting better at multi tasking though, that's for sure! Our goal is a year.

  • I still EP. We're a month in. This week I started pumping every other time she eats. Day or night. I used to pump everytime she eats ( every 3 hours ) and I was so miserable. My husband said we should switch to formula everyday. I couldn't leave the house. I'd pump, feed her, change her, get her back to sleep, clean the pump, and basically have to start again. I couldn't deal with it anymore. Everyone said I'd lose my supply if we didn't pump every 3 hours. I didn't care because I was ready to formula feed anyway if something didn't change so I had to at least try to change it up. I used to pump 6 to 8 oz every 3 hours when she was only eating 2 oz. I had 21 storage bags of milk frozen in 2 weeks. Now that I'm pumping every other time (12, 6, 12, 6) we are still getting enough to feed and freeze some. Even since she's moved to 3 oz. We have 4 bottles pumped in the fridge and I still need to pump tonight at 12. It's working out great for us. I am MUCH happier. She's still getting breast milk and we can actually leaving the house because I pump every 6 hours. It gives us a good 4 hours to be out. We just take a bottle and go. It's working out SO much better for us! If for some reason we lose supply, I have lots of frozen milk and I'll start pumping every 3 hours again. For now, this is working out great. I'm so glad we found something that works for us because I was 100% ready to give up.

I was told and I read several places that you don't have to wash the pump parts after every use. Our LC told us this. We store the pump parts in the fridge in a ziploc bag between uses. We wash them once a day and then sterilize them once a week. I switch the bags out once a week. When I first started pumping, I washed them after every use and it was terrible. Now, it seems so much easier.

  • I'm with @ShianeNicole on this one. I've been pumping every 6 hours and I'm getting plenty to keep the baby fed and slowly getting some in the freezer. I honestly don't know how you all manage pumping every 2-3 hours. Kudos to you ladies for that. I'm glad I haven't really struggled with my supply, and should that become an issue I'll certainly add more pumping sessions in to stimulate production, but for now this is working well for me. It honestly hardly even has an impact on my day to day life now, it's just part of the routine. Though I'm not gonna lie, I do look forward to the day I no longer need to pump even though that's forever away, haha.
