Names you can't use

What are the names that you love but can't use? (either due to association or rhyming, etc)

Mine:
Cora
Mara
Nora
Our last name ends in -ra and it's too "Julia Gulia" for me and DH. LOVE those names though.

DH & I are both from families with six kids and that takes a lot of names out of consideration for us, since I don't want a repeat of our siblings' names or this kid's cousins' names ;)
Dominic
Gabriel
Michael
are the family names I'm most sad about not being able to use

    What about Coraline or Coralie?
  • I am obsessed with Avery and Audrey but our last name ends in a 'y' and the 'ee' sound so my husband is very much against anything that would have a similar ending. I'm still bitter about it because I don't see it being an issue ...  oh well. I also love the name Liv but that's off the table as our niece is Olivia and everyone calls her Liv for short.

  • Anything that starts with a W. My sister has 3 kids, all that start with a W, and it makes me feel like a W name we like is off the table.
We also like her DHs name, but for a girl. Weird to use it? Yeah, probably
  • I wanted to name my DD Malia, but my mom apparently has a horrific association with that name. My mom is really involved in my babies' lives, so I won't ever use it. But I love it.
  • Neices and Nephews and young cousins (no name swiping in a large family sucks!):

    Sophia
    Isabella
    Nathan
    Riley
    Sadie
    Emma
    Talia
    Ella
    Samuel
    Jacob
    Aaron
    Ethan
    Madeline
    Adeline

noelietrex I know exactly what you mean about a large family.  When I was pregnant with DS, we were in the predicament that every name we liked, I had someone either on my mom's side or my dad's side (both are huge!) with that name.  This time, we're just going with what we like, and if someone already has used that name, oh well... that just means it's a very nice name! :)

So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"

Same for us. I have two SILs and they have two kids each that start with the same letter. One family is Bs and one is Ks. I definitely felt awkward at first when a B name showed up on our list.

DD's name starts with a B, so one SIL jokes that our next has to start with a K to even it out.

Definitely nothing that starts with a J. I'm the oldest of six and we all have J names. My husband's name starts with J as well.
  • @TattoosandLace I forgot my father and all his 5 siblings are S names, and me and my sisters are all A names. Haha, my family is special. I did use an A name for our DD though. Yes, my family asked if I was carrying on tradition. No, just no
  • For me it's names I associate with my childhood bullies; Amanda, Jessica, Shane.

Mark is out as well, my long term high school boyfriend, who is also one of my oldest and dearest friends, is named Mark.

My husband has also banned anything "ethnic sounding". When he said that my eyes almost rolled out of my head. It sucks because I love the name "Paloma".
  • @SparkySunshine oh dear! I can't tell you how many people asked if DD would have a J name. Not doing that to the poor kid!

Although, since DD's name is Blakeley, I feel like we can't have a Jane or Sarah.

Family members names that are obviously out are:

    Jenna
    Julia
    Josie
    Abby
    Jane
    Jade
    Jennifer
    Jenni
    Jesse
    Matthew
    Michael
    Jennifer
    Brexton
    Brennan
    Karley
    Kason
    Jeanie

I'd love to name a son Liam after my dad (William), but DH hates the name.
  • I am EXCLUSIVELY considering E- names. I'm Erin, husband Eric. DS - Eric. So I feel like we need t keep the trend going. Also, I really like to our names together all coming off of one big E on Christmas cards and such ... Anything but an E name would eliminate that option.

  • Any Chris name. Michael, david, greg, Mathew, luke, john, mark.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • Our #1 boys name is Jacob which is dh's cousins name. It's not totally off the table but we'll have to do some serious thinking and talk with him about it. They are not close but I think it would be weird.
    Me (32) & DH (35)
    Married 10.10.10
    DD born 7.25.16 <3
  • Our DD's name (and mine) start with C. I don't want to be too Duggar-y.
  • Emily
    Tobias
    Kitty
  • Sometimes not being able to use them for whatever reason just makes you want them more than you would if you could.
  • My grandmothers name is one that I love, but my older sister used the name, "Grace" as her daughters middle name... I want to use it for a girls middle name too if we have a girl... I can't decide if she'll be miffed by that or not (my sister). I mean, it wasn't HER name... its our late grandmothers... just because she had a baby first why does she get exclusive rights to it?

Similar situation is my other sisters middle name is my mothers maiden name... she said the other day "That name is MY name it is off the table" and that just made me mad... you don't OWN the name, I'd like to honor my parents, and my grandparents in some way with names so how can she just claim exclusive rights to it?

**Whoops! Thought I was on the BNB. HAHA!.....but I will leave this here anyway since you ladies are talking about names. Better put my glasses on!**

Alice: My grandmother's American name (but she goes by Ali), that I cannot use because she will assume that I named the baby after her. She is not a grandparent I would name a kid after, but I love the name. I had to nix it.

Thomas: Love the name for first or middle, but it is my dad's deadbeat brother's name. He would know that the kid wasn't named after his brother, but it would still sting. So that is a no-go.

Otto: Hated it at first. My dad wanted it for my brother, but my mom wouldn't let him use it. My husband wanted it for our daughter, but I hated it at the time. Now it has grown on me, but we decided to use it for our dog. After our dog was named, we found out that my brother had it on a list for if they ever had a boy. But that seemed to be pretty even, as the name we had for a boy was used by them when they got a dog. HAHA

Other than that, I think that we are good to go. Most of the kids on both sides of the family have names that we would never pick in the first place.

  • I'm a teacher so there are heaps of names I would never be able to use:

Ethan- I taught 4 of them this year and they all sucked.
    Chelsea
    Liam
    Nathan
    Tahni
    Josh
    Laurie
    Amy
    Tashe
    Tyler
    Jacob

Oh my list is huge. My kids are going to have to have weird names just so I won't teach anyone with the same name.

Little boy due July 31st 2016

  • @LilLambie - being a teacher is THE WORST when it comes to names! I have bad experiences with Ethans, too. No Jordan, no Nicholas, no Alexis, no Aiden, no Elizabeth. Thankfully I have always worked with very diverse groups of kids so there's not a TON of cross over of names I won't use.
  • I'm not a fan of names that end in an "uh" sound (like JuliA, AliciA...) no offense. (My middle name has it though...)

Wanted Elizabeth for my daughter's middle name, but since we are naming her after my maternal grandmother (whom I never got to meet) DH suggested the middle name be HIS maternal grandmother's name (which, you guessed it: end in "uh" but oh well)

Want to name a boy David...DH wants a junior. I was saving David for boy #2 (assuming I have 2 of each) but now, that will either be nixed or my #1 name is out.

And, yes, teachers have it rough. Not that any of these were on my list, but Sophia/Sofia, Isabel, Gabriela, and Lesly/Leslie are definitely out.

I do like the names of the Greek muses though, but...that might get a little weird.

  • I'm obsessed with the name Ariella for a girl but two people (hubby included) said it sounded too much like areola and that menacing little bratty kids will make fun of it.

My runner up was Ava Rose, but then I learned it's the name of a pornstar, who is apparently quite the prolific actress with a large internet presence. Damn it.
  • Theodore (nephew's name)

Stella (my dad's stepmom's name - she was really horrible to them so I couldn't do that to him, although I never met her and love the name)

Sasha (DH has a cousin with this name who caused some really horrible family drama)

Aurora (My dad's mom's name. She died when he was 2 but I think it's so beautiful. DD is Norah though and I'm not into rhyming)
  • DS is Mason and DD is Morgan. Didn't plan on having another one but I guess we should stay with the "M" trend. My mom, MIL and sister are all teachers. So they have a lot of opinions.

These are the names we can't use:

    Riley, Callie, Bailey(sisters dogs)
    Avery Grace (niece)
    Kameryn Mackenzie (niece)

    Names are hard.
  • We have two with names that start with R. My in- laws are driving me nuts that we have to use an R for #3 but my husband and I are not fond of any other R names
  • Daniel/Danielle..(Danny) I love this name, but when I was 19 named my beloved doberman that and despite Danny passing 5 years ago (he got hot by car) everyone knew and loved Danny and knows that was my "kid" and would def look at me strange because they would think I was naming a kid after a dog. I loved that dog but dang it I still love that name! Cant use it :( learned the hard way not to use your fav ppl names for pets! My dog i have now is Moose lol

  • Luckily all my dogs were named Sherlock, Velvet, Mr. Puppy, and Frankie. And the cat was Marie. None of those were ever in consideration lol

  • I don't think I have so much of a problem with names, just fussing ones that actually fit, or "work"

I just can't use these (cousins, niece)

    Daniel
    Sonya
    Alexis
    Sarah
    Matthew

Good thing I'm more for unusual names!
  • Our last name rhymes with Tale, so we can't use anything ending in 'ale' or 'elle' without raising Dr. Suess characters.

    Abigail
    Isobel
    Annabelle
    Gabrielle

You get the gist. Sad, because I like all of the above.
