Bloodwork - did Dr. call?

After reading through some posts, I just realized this evening that my dr office did not call me after I got my bloodwork done. I got it last Tuesday, so with the holiday/family events I didn't think anymore about it. Is it typical that the dr office would call with results, no matter what the outcome is? I see people posting about their hcg levels, and of course I have no idea what mine are. I have an appointment next Thursday for my first u/s. It's been 6 years since I was pregnant last so I can't remember how all of this goes...

Re: Bloodwork - did Dr. call?

  • With my DD I didn't have anyone call.  Since my loss I had extra draws this pregnancy and of course they knew I was anxious to get the results.  I would call them next day by noon if they didn't call me.

  • What I have learned over my miscarriage and this pregnancy is that I have to be my own advocate. If I want to know something, I'll call my doctor twice a day until I get an answer. If I feel like something is wrong or I need reassurance I call asap or email. I call the next day for my results and call every day until they are in.

My doctors office has this great thing where my results are posted on line in my own account, where I can see my whole record, email the nurses, and request appointments.

But my point is, you have to call. You can't rely on them. :)
  • I agree the squeaky wheel gets the grease!
  • I used to feel guilty I was being annoying, or one of "those" people. My mom is a nurse so I know perfectly well how they like to make fun of people who ask stupid questions. But then I realized IDGAF. Its my life, my body, my babies, and while it might be unimportant to them, it isn't to me, and I won't apologize for being in control of my care.
  • With blood work I always go with "no news is good news"
  • If you had your hcg checked then they should call, though I was with one office that didn't call until they had the results from the second round of hcg blood work done.

  • My doctor's office also says the same thing to me about blood work - as @Taymiller says, 'no news is good news'. They only call if there is an issue.
  • My dr told me they'd call with any issues and if I didn't hear from them that we'd discuss results at next appointment.

  • Thanks ladies!

I am going to call in the AM, when I finally thought about it this evening the office was already closed. Hoping that no news means good news, but I would like to double check!
  • Mine doesn't call unless there is a problem.

This. DH and I were talking just the other day how we have learned to be our own advocate with the doctor and be annoying if need be. My doctor tells me to call if I don't hear from them within a day. They have a lot of patients and it's easy to feel you're the only pregnant person in town (at least it is for me!) :)
  • Called my doctor 9 times today to get answers. Unfortunately was told my Hcg levels are dropping. Waited over a week for these results due to an error in the office. Was told someone would call me and I just waited two more days for that phone call. I had had enough today and didn't care how annoying I was. If something was wrong I wanted to know. My instincts were right and I'm glad I insisted that someone call me with the results TODAY! Now I can plan for next steps and move on with my life rather than sit around all day and wait by the phone. Very disappointed with how my doctor has handled this.
  • @Aliosin so sorry to hear about your results.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
  • So sorry. :( On top of bad news the way you found out was not good.

When you're up to it, definitely call the doc and talk to her/him or the office manager. Let them know what happened, because that's lame.
  • I really feel for you ladies who don't have open communication with your providers. It's sad that you guys have to beg for answers. My healthcare company that I work for and am a patient with has a patient portal that you can view visit summaries and lab results online the day after your apppointment. Does anyone else have this ?
  • @HMcDade1 I do. I can get lab results a couple hours after my blood work. But I still like to hear from the doctor and their opinion on it all.
  • All my results were posted online. However, I did get a call from the nurse who said my OB wanted me to come in early to get an US because I had some previous bleeding.
  • All of my results are posted online.

@Aliosin I'm sorry to hear about your results and the way the Dr's office handled getting the information to you. Thinking of you!

  • @Aliosin I'm so terribly sorry about your news and the way you had to get it. My lab sends me an email with the results and the dr calls sometime later. I've been scolded by others for consulting Dr. Google, but it's hard to wait for answers from the actual dr.
