Elementary Teachers?

Anyone else here teach elementary school?  I have fifth graders, and I feel like the worst teacher because I have significantly noticeably less energy to do everything.  I am behind in grading and planning, and I feel like all day long I am fighting severe exhaustion.  The real me is so high energy that the kids always think I am crazy and fun.  Now I feel lethargic most of the time!!!  Plus I am directing the school musical after school and commute about an hour to work.  I love my job, but I feel like I am acting like a big grump!

Re: Elementary Teachers?

  • Oh gosh, this is so me. I teach kinder and I feel so bad for my students! I'm exhausted and my patience is thin and, though I don't think it's affecting them much, I feel like it is! I'm so tired, I actually took today off because I just am not getting any sleep lately!

I can't imagine taking on extra responsibilities right now. I'm in the midst of preparing the kindergarten holiday show and I can hardly handle that much!

How many more days until Winter Break?   ;)

  • @Wepplo I don't know about y'all but we have 18 days until break, only 9 of which will be normal class days. Not that I'm counting lol.
I teach 4th grade and I'm so freaking tired and grumpy. I have no patience although I'm trying not to let it show. I'm currently getting ready for their first big lab of the year (building electrical circuits) and I'm not even looking forward to the level of hectic that lab day will bring.

  • I teach a preschool special education class at an elementary school and I've been out for some time because I just couldn't do it with severe vomiting! I've felt so guilty and also behind on paperwork over here, but it was doctor's orders. Before I went out, though, I napped on my lunch every day and sat around with the kids way more, where before I would take walks on my lunch and was very silly/active with my kids. Good for you all for sticking with it and even taking on extra duties!
  • I teach 1st grade. I went back to school today after thanksgiving and I felt a million times better than before the break. I even told DH I couldn't do it anymore because it wasn't fair to the kids so I'm glad it's getting a little better. How far along are you? Once I hit 13 weeks my energy seemed to come creeping back.

  • Kindergarten teacher here. They have had a lot more playtime this year! Oh well, that's life. I'm still teaching what I need to, but I can't go above and beyond.
  • They should have more play time! ;) I'm 11w 5 d- hopefully I catch a wave of energy like they say!!!
  • I teach high school, but I feel exactly the same!  I am  normally very energetic, constantly moving around my classroom helping my kids, answering questions, and such.  But lately, especially the end of the day during my last 3 classes, I have no energy.  If there are no questions or I don't see anyone struggling, I sit in the back of the classrooms where I can see what everyone is working on (computer lab) and watch from there.  I just can't do it.  I feel like such an awful teacher, but I am so fatigued I feel like I don't have a choice.  On top of it, I advise a high energy club after school, am on a building committee, teach a PD course on SIP days, and I teach a grad level course at the local university.  I'm in so deep with extras, its killing me. I want to crawl in a hole and never work again. I need to find things to cut out next semester.  Feeling your pain!
  • Middle school teacher here! I feel the same way. Usually tired & short fused with my students. Sucks bc I'm the fun, energetic teacher whose class they enjoy going to. I plan on telling work tomorrow so it'll be nice to tell the kids so they can understand why Mrs. C has been such a grinch!
  • I'm 4th grade special education (intervention reading & co-teaching). I'm always so exhausted after work and I have two little ones (4 1/2 & almost 3) at home that keep me busy with my husband working nights. IEPs seem like such a chore right now... can't even imagine how progress reports are going to go this 9 weeks! :/

  • Goodness I feel so much better reading these! I'm a K-5 autism support teacher and I've never been so far behind with such a severe lack of energy to do something about it. I feel worst for my staff, thank goodness they're all amazing ladies! But I'm right there with all of you!

@Jgar2u2 I just finished my 4th IEP meeting in the past 2 1/2 weeks...definitely not my best work. And progress monitoring has me wanting to crawl into a bubble and not come out for awhile!
  • There's two of you that seem like you're using your real name as your screen name...you know if someone googles your name, this forum comes up? Just an FYI if you don't want to be outed, it's happened here before.
  • I lack creativity, but thank you for that info! I'llbwork on that :)
  • I teach at a private school for children with exceptionalities. All of them this year happen to be on the spectrum. I seriously struggle each day because it is so mentally & physically draining. I've been known to put my head down when I've got kids using their reinforcers (like playing on iPads), lol. The struggle is real!

I've looked into changing my user name (not for that but for security in general) but can't find how to. Do I need to make a new account?

You have to sign into the knot instead of the bump and go from there. Username and password work there too.
  • Also I wouldn't do initials or anything like that. Very easy to find people on the internet that way too, especially since you can look at post history on tb.
  • I am a Title 1 Reading Teacher for 2nd & 3rd grade (new position this year).  Yes, I am exhausted and feel like my patience isn't what it should be.  I also have a 2.5 yr old at home.  I remember during my 1st pregnancy I would go home from school and fall asleep on the couch....that doesn't happen with a toddler around.  If I remember correctly, I did get my energy back after 1st trimester.  It went away again once I got to about 35 wks.

Thanks I don't know why I didn't think about this from the beginning!
  • I feel much better after Thanksgiving break too. Now, if I can just figure out the going to the bathroom every hour situation I would be much better. It's such a tough decision! Do I drink water so I don't have a headach, but then have to run to the bathroom every hour, or do I just not drink anything but have a pounding headach!?

Im in that boat too! I'm a frequent peer regardless but it's only going to get worse from here. I'm worried!
  • Middle school and struggling! My 3yo has also been sick a few times and I've missed work for that and nausea. I have had to puke a few times at work as well which was awful. I have luckily had an awesome student teacher the past month and that was a huge relief! But he's done now...roll on Winter Break!
  • I was a 3rd grade teacher when I was pregnant with my first (now SAHM) and honestly felt so bad when it got to be third tri because I had to sit from my desk and teach and I thought I'd never do that but I was huge and swollen and had no choice. All that to say, do what you can while you can and hang in there because second tri is great!
  • Woohoo! Teachers unite! I'm 13w 3d and a fifth grade teacher. Thank goodness for final performance tasks. The next few weeks my kiddos are doing a research project so I can sit next to the struggling kiddos. I am also on a shorter fuse which I hate but my kids laugh it off and just say "calm down miss, don't stress the baby! "
  • This is actually perfect timing since during my second tri I will be teaching the most important curriculum. By the third tri my class should be well trained and know what to do on most stuff, especially that I know I won't be up to everything so I'll plan it out now. I'm glad how this is working out!
  • I teach 3rd grade and I'm 13 weeks today! I have been very tired and definitely have not been going above and beyond like normal. I also have a shorter fuse :( I just directed the Thanksgiving play, and I'm exhausted! I can't wait for winter break! I hope my energy comes back soon!
  • @DeePaddy24 I don't know how you do it - I just have 1 with SEN and my patience has almost dwindled to zero with her!

I teach year 4 (8-9 year olds) and am shattered by the afternoon. Thank goodness for Christmas and that my class love art - I know what we'll be doing for next couple of weeks :)
  • I teach preschool at a Christian school and we've had a lot more play days! I've had several days where I've felt "grumpy" and just exhausted. Luckily we have aides when we need them, help is always great.
  • I'm planning to announce on Friday, Dec. 18th - assuming everything at our NT scan looks okay on the 17th. So I was taken a bit off guard today when one of my room moms straight up asked me if I'm expecting! I am (maybe unreasonably) annoyed that she'd ask like that when I clearly haven't announced anything. I answered honestly because I have a weird thing about saying no (feels like bad luck!) but asked her not to talk about it please until I announce later.

Follow up with me telling my only coworker that also knows, and she tells me that someone else asked her if I was pregnant because I'm "starting to show"! What?! I'm 12 weeks, first time mom! It's bloat and chub! I am so self conscious now and the hormones aren't helping! Ugh! Who thinks that's okay to say and/or repeat?!
