Do you feed LO every time he wakes up at night?

We are pumping and bottle feeding. He wakes up almost like clockwork every 3 hours at night. He eats at 6, in bed by 7, then wakes up at 10, 1, and 4. I always feed him 2 ounces when he wakes up. I figure he is ready to eat and that's why he is waking. However, I'm not sure if he is actually hungry because lately, he's only been eating 1/2-1ounce. I am tempted to feed him more because I worry he'll get up in an hour starving. Also, in the middle of the night, I'm not always awake enough to check for hunger cues, especially because he is usually screaming until I give him the bottle. I'd like him to start sleeping for 4-5 hour stretches so we only have to get up once or twice per night instead of 3 times.

  • I do feed my LO when he wakes him, he is also up like clock work. Tonight its every 2.5 hours. My LO is pretty obvious with his hunger cues, so I know that's what he wants.

  • My LO sleeps 4-5 hr stretches at night- but occasionally she will wake up around an hour after she falls asleep and I either change her or just soothe her back to sleep, so no, I don't feed every time she wakes.
  • I don't because sometimes, he just needs comforted.
  • Yes, if it's been more than an hour I feed her.  Sometimes in the early morning she will wake up after 30 min or so and we can usually rock her back to sleep, but during the night she usually only wakes up when she's hungry.
  • Sometimes my LO eats less at night than she normally does. If he's waking on the same schedule, I would just keep feeding him however much he wants to eat at the time. Depending on his age he may not need more than 2 oz at a time and he may still need that third feeding at night. My daughter kept up 2 oz and three night feedings until about 4-5 weeks.

I feed LO every time she wakes up, but it's usually only twice a night and she always takes the bottle so she's definitely hungry.
  • Similar question- do you look for hunger cues before baby cries at night? We usually just wake when she cries and offer to feed her then; but this is inconsistent with looking for the early hunger cues, and feeding before she cries, like we try to do during the day...although not always successfully.
  • My baby has been sleeping for 4 hours at a time for the past couple of nights. If she wakes up before the four hours, I give her a pacifier and pat her back to sleep.
  • Unless my son wakes up 1.5 hours after I put him down I always feed him. He's a chunky butt and is EBF so he almost always wants food. He also likes to comfort nurse and I don't have a problem with that :)

Well, I'm usually sleeping before he cries at night, which would make it hard to look for hunger cues... Though it's probably a good ide! I'd rather get my sleep.
