Newborn nursing for an hour

Anyone else have a newborn that nurses for a hour or more.  My LO averages an hour each feeding and went an hour and 15 minutes for her last feeding.  Is this ok?

  • Don't worry she's just getting the supply up ;)

  • totally normal - Drew kept up his marathon nursing sessions until close to 3 months!  I grew to enjoy the time to just sit and relax with a quiet baby on my lap.  Once he started eating faster I wasn't sure what to do with him the rest of the day, haha!!

  • absolutely normal. put on a good tv show, grab a big bottle of water, and a granola bar or something to snack on. You'll need the fluid and the calories.

  • Yes! Now, 7+ months in, I miss those days. That's when I could catch up on tv shows, read a book, talk on the phone, etc. from time to time. Enjoy it!
  • LO was nursing for an hour the first couple of weeks until I realized that he was JUST SUCKING! He only actually ate the first 20 minutes or so and then would just use me as his binkie. I cut that off right away. As soon I heard the gulping stop,  I pulled him off of me...

It was too time consuming to be a human binkie!

  • I am glad you asked this question because I have been having a similar issue with DS.  He doesn't quite nurse for an hour but usually around 40 mins.  I am glad to know that it is normal.

  • Oh yea, my LO nursed for that long for the first 2 weeks.  I thought to myself this will never last, it is way too time consuming!  But then she dropped down to 15 or so minutes and now is less than 10.  Like the pp stated, that's your LO getting a supply.
