Third Trimester 3D/4D ultrasound?!

I am so excited that my OB does a 3rd trimester 3D/4D ultrasound. We had one at 15 weeks for gender determination at a place called Peek at me! It was the coolest thing and we got great pictures of him too.

Is anyone else planning to get a 3rd trimester 3D/4D ultrasound?

I keep debating on whether or not to do it. This is our third LO and we've never done a a 3D/4D one before. Part of me wants to, but another part of me likes not knowing what our baby will look like until he/she is born. It's good motivation during labor too lol we probably won't waste the money since we won't be getting anymore through our midwives and would have to pay for it OUP.

  • It's so expensive, and my little girl's last ultrasound pictures were pretty bad because she was so stubborn and wouldn't move her arms. We honestly probably wouldn't get good enough pictures for $80. Plus, once she's here the pictures won't mean much.

$80? I know someone who does 1 hour newborn sessions with 15 printed photos and unlimited disk copies for that price.
She's in Oregon or I'd have hired her for! She's great though.
But $80? That's a lot to leave to chance in my opinion.
  • Ours wasn't much for the first one and since this is our first baby, we were anxious and excited to see him and know what we were having.
This one goes through insurance because my OB is doing it at the office.
It was awesome and amazing to see him the first time, but he was so little so he wasn't fully developed. Now it's been another 15 weeks and we will be able to see a little more what he will look like.
  • I had one in my first trimester and I am going in for my second 3D/4D at 30 weeks. I was gifted a package for two sessions but to be completely honest it's nothing I would have spent my own money on. It has also caused a lot of unnecessary drama from my MIL, she doesn't believe in seeing the baby before its born and is completely against the idea... Wish I would have known this before inviting her to the second session, she let me know yesterday at thanksgiving dinner that she will be sitting in the waiting room. Oh and not to mention we worked around her work schedule so she would be able to attend, gotta love mother in laws.....

$80 is the best price I've seen here in Atlanta! And that's for 20-30 minutes with 15 photos? I still feel like even if it goes to 30 it would be so rushed...

@AlmJlcBaby1 if it was offered to me through my OB's office I would totally do it! Like the Harmony test was offered through mine and SO and I were totally all for that, but if we would have had to pay I probably wouldn't have bothered.

I just find it insane! i could do so much more with $80, like buy a swing! To each their own though, no shame in the people who want to spend their money that way.
  • We had one done last time at like 34 weeks because the machine at my regular OBs was broken. To be honest I'm not sure our son came out looking anything like the images and he was born only 3 weeks later lol. Not something I'd choose to pay for this time round.
  • I found a great place that only charges $45. Im surprised since in California everything is priced so high. I got it done at 19 weeks because my anatomy scan was prolonged and i couldnt wait any longer to find out the gender but it scared me because she wasn't developed very much yet, so Im curious to go back and see what she looks like now but everyone says they won't look anything like the ultrasound when they come out. Its still a fun thing to do if its in your budget, if not you didn't miss out on very much.
  • My doc did a free one but dec 10th I'm paying to get more so I can give it to my mom for Christmas. The package includes 30 min session, they record the heartbeat and put in a stuffed animal, I get hard copies and a dvd.

My advice is to drink LOTS of water. It will give better pictures.
  • I spent about $60-70 to do 3d/4d pictures with DD at about 30 weeks and it wasn't worth the money in my opinion. She wasn't cooperating and had her face covered the entire time. I'm not doing them this time and will save the $$ for newborn pictures instead.
  • @Fullerj21 exactly what I was afraid of!! I think we're gonna try to get some affordable newborn pictures instead. Or attempt to.

  • We debated it, but where I live, it's $175 for a 20 minute session. We had a lot of big things to purchase after our shower, so we opted to spend our money on those big things. If it was $50-$80 I probably would do it, but $175+ it wasn't worth it to me. I think it would be very fun, but that $$ was better spent on baby supplies. I would rather have a newborn session done with a professional photographer after baby is here to hang on the wall, rather than black and white in utero images that I'll probably put in a book.
  • I feel so lucky. The clinic I go to for all my appointments does an ultrasound at every single appointment. If baby is cooperating and in a good position, they take 3D pics for you.
  • I was about to say $80 is so cheap. In OKC it's around $180 for 3D/4D.
  • At the place that offers them here they don't even recommend getting them done after 28 weeks because it gets to the point where they aren't moving around and flipping as much and if they aren't in a good position chances are you won't be able to get clear pictures. That being said, with my first pregnancy I did pay to get them done at like 27 weeks. Haven't looked at them since and was completely disappointed. Baby wasn't really cooperating and it turned out to be a huge waste of money. If it were free and offered at the ultrasound place, for sure, but we don't get that option and its definitely not worth spending any money on in my opinion.

  • I had them done for DD and two of them are still my favorite pictures!! I put one on my tummy and made a heart with my hands and DH took a picture! In love with it still!! I was 30 weeks and DD was very cooperative! It was a gift from my mom (because she really wanted to see baby too) about $115 for 35 mins, 20 pictures, and a free DVD of the whole session as the tech was moving around. I'll be a returning customer when we go back in middle December and I'll only do the 25 mins package and free DVD so it will be about $70 (since I also got a discount for referring someone). Well worth it when I have ONLY one pic of this little one thru ultrasound from 20 weeks! Very unhappy with my ultrasound experiences this time around. I got three for the 20 weeks and one was a picture of baby's kidneys... Geee thanks! Worth the money if you are a photo junkie like me! However, I totally get using that money elsewhere!!

  • I did! I paid $60 for a 15 min one and I think it was worth it. I went at 28 weeks.

    My horror grows.. :cold_sweat:
  • I feel very lucky now! In my office an ultrasound around 30 weeks is customary for every woman and they include some 3D/4D ultrasounds. If I had to pay out of pocket for those, I don't think that I would get them. My next OB appointment is Monday (29 wk 3days) so I will be scheduling our final ultrasound! So excited! :)
  • It's not a waste of money...it's nice to look back at plus you can show your kids what they looked like inside you. Technology has come a long way so why not take advantage of it...
  • Nope. They look really weird to me and I wouldn't spend the money. I'd rather be surprised to see what the baby looks like when she's here.
  • We weren't planning to because these honestly creep me out and I've never liked them. With that said, we have an U/S at our next appointment and my OB told me that since they're doing it anyway, they'll typically print out 2-3 pictures for us to take with us.

Otherwise, if that wasn't the case, then no, I wouldn't pay for it.

A Glimpse Before & After in Moore will do a 15 minute peek for $80.

  • We tried with DS. It was $75 but they had a clause that if they couldn't get a picture the first time you didn't have to pay and it was optional to try again. We didn't end up getting a picture and didn't try again due to an anterior placenta. This time around my Dr. just did one picture for us just because while we were checking for the placenta location today. I was super excited!

  • Had ours at 28 weeks! This is the ONLY shot we got, but it was incredible! We enjoyed it.
  • @DrillSergeantCat I actually did the sneak peek there at 12 weeks. She told me since I'm 30 weeks that option ended at 24 or 25. The cheapest the tech quoted was $160 I believe. That's only Tuesday through Friday 9-3. I work. No big deal. I'll see her (baby girl) again in a week for measurements at my OB. I love that there's a fellow OKC southsider on here :)

I've never been there. I thought about it because my insurance only covers one ultrasound, but they scheduled me for a second. It's tomorrow and since I go to a perinatologist for my ultrasounds, they do a few minutes in 3D.

  • I don't know if the video will work, but as part of a medical trial which we volunteered for, we had an MRI scan on our baby, the photographs and videos we got to see of him are truly amazing!
They are still looking for volunteers within the UK who are around the Sheffield area so I don't know if anyone else would be interested just PM me

I feel the same way! I'm a photo junkie for sure and I too have been disappointed with ultrasounds pics of LO. I got good shots from my 20 week anatomy scan (below), but that's it from the whole pregnancy so far. I've had to ask for 2 out of the 3 other ultrasounds I've had and one of she she was just an embryo lol. The two I asked for are hard to see her. My MIL bought me a session so her, my mom, myself and my husband could go and see her sweet little face together for the holidays.

  • I LOVE the 3d/4d :( the benefit is that most of the time of you do not get a good session most places Ive gone give second sessions free of charge. Ive done it with both my boys. :) my first born on left and 2Nd on right :)
  • My OB office has a new ultrasound machine that does 3D so I'm lucky and get 3D pics with every ultrasound. My next one is on the 10th during my 32 week appointment. I'll get another one at 36 weeks.
  • I wouldn't pay to have them done because a lot of the time they look freaky to me, but my OBs machine switches back and forth. At my last scan (20 weeks) she wasn't developed enough for them to get a good shot so I didn't get any. I have an appointment today and I think they are going to be scheduling an US for a few more weeks to recheck my placenta- hopefully I can get a good one then!

Also the hormones are in full effect- I teared up looking at some of these they are so cute!
