Worried- fundal height measuring ahead, baby measuring behind, breach and anterior

So, Im a bit worried and very confused. Im wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation, and how they went. Yes, i know that every case is different but a few feel good stories never hurt!
Im currently 32w5d. My fundal height is measuring 34cms (apparently over the 90th percentile). My weight gain has been on track, and iv had a lot of comments about how I really dont look like iv gained weight, except for my bump (though maybe people are just being nice!).
2 seperate midwives and a dr all felt bub, and told me it was head down posterior.
I had a scan today (i had tiny spotting so they were just being cautious, but there was no reason for spotting in the end). Baby is measuring 17th percentile for 31 weeks, is anterior and breach!
Im not too fussed about breach/anterior (yet), as although i am slightly worried i know there is plenty of time for baby to turn. I will definately be looking into baby spinning though. But I am suprised so many people got it wrong! Also, I am worried about bubs weight. I know statistically 17% of babies are that weight or smaller, and that small does not mean unhealthy. My concern is that with my family history of restricted fetal growth, i want to be doing as much as I can to put weight on bub, if this is what is causing bub to be small, not just its genetics. And how can my fundal height/scan be so different!
Guess Im feeling a bit worried that all these tests have been so inconsistent!

  • The doctor and midwives may have been right and baby just flipped. Up until 35 weeks they go all over the place. I would talk to your doctor about your concerns for the baby being small. If they didn't say anything to you about the ultrasound then I wouldn't worry about it! Best of luck!

  • Fundal heights are a very inaccurate 'science'. They say you are supposed to be the same cms as you are weeks but that is such a small variation that tons of people aren't exactly at that point. Your fundal height could change between the beginning of the day and the end also because the way baby is laying has a lot to do with it.
As far as the low weight, if your doctor wasn't concerned, I wouldn't worry about it. Honestly, even the ultrasound weights can be off, I've heard by as much as a pound but I'm not sure exactly what it is.
  • Did they diagnose baby as iugr yet? If not I wouldn't worry about weight at this time. There is so much variation in weight during these next couple of weeks, it can be different from woman to woman - baby to baby. If baby is iugr, unfortunately, eating more food isn't going to help an iugr baby's weight. Iugr is the result of placental/umbilical cord insufficiency - often why some physicians see it necessary to delivery iugr babies earlier than 39 weeks. It isn't very well understood, however some sort of complication with the placenta or umbilical cord exists, which deprives baby of oxygen and nutrients, causing a small baby. Every practice has their own policy, but if baby gets below a certain percentile, they will want to deliver/induce. It has nothing to do with genetics either...however some women naturally grow smaller babies than others. This could be the case in your family (not Iugr). Ultimately, at this point the ultrasound is going to be more accurate than a fundal measurement. Usually fundal heights that are within +\-2 cms of your gestational age are normal. I can understand your fear with inconsistency of exams, but trust that your providers know what they're doing! They will make sure you and baby are safe. Don't jump to conclusions just yet, continue to take care of yourself and it will all be ok :)
  • Had my doctors appointment yesterday and am feeling much more relaxed now, thanks for the support ladies :)
Firstly, bub has flipped again (which makes me realise he/she will probably continue to do so for a few weeks yet).
Second, my dr said according to ger, bub was measuring in the 50th percentile, and the lady doing the ultrasound was wrong. After I explained I was so concerned because of family history of IUGR, she scheduled me in for a follow up scan before my 36 week appointment. Happy to have such a very accomodating doctor! :)
