AB negative blood group?

I just had an appointment with my midwife and got my blood test results back and found out that I have AB negative blood group, does anyone else have the same?
I'm slightly worried as she said if I start producing anti bodies then they will fight off my baby as it is foreign to my body. She mentioned about an injection to stop this but didn't state when it would be, does anyone else have experience with this?

Re: AB negative blood group?

  • There's a lot of different threads about RH - blood. Here is a bump article about it

I too am RH-, I believe you get the Rhogam shot at 28 w and again after birth if your baby is RH+. But none of this matters if SO is RH- as well. Do you know his blood type?

  • ^^This. I'm a negative blood type as well. My doctor said it's no big deal as long as you get the Rhogam shots whenever you're supposed to (if this is your first child, around 28w and again after birth, as @pooputtette said).

Try not to stress about this. It's something that can easily be managed.
  • I'm RH- as well. My midwife is going to talk more about it at my appointment, but I have to get the Rhogam shot at 28 weeks and then again after birth. My DH has a positive blood type and I knew I had a negative at my first appointment so they were already aware this would be an issue, but they weren't concerned at all. It's very manageable.
  • I'm rh- as well. I got the shot at 28 weeks with both my previous pregnancies. My 1st is also negative so I didn't need a 2nd shot with her but my 2nd was positive and I needed the shot after she was born. It's also important to know that if you ever miscarry you need a shot after that too. I didn't know this until I miscarried last year.
  • I am AB- as well. Last pregnancy I had to get 5 rhogam shots because I had a lot of bleeding through out pregnancy. The shots are no big deal. Just make sure to get them when asvised.
  • I'm A-  In addition to checking your blood type they should also do an antibodie screen on  your blood as well.  That will tell if there are already antibodies present or not.   My doctor said I'll get a shot at 28 weeks and one after birth.

  • Don't stress, you'll be fine! I'm O- and you'll just get the Rhogam shot in the arse around 28weeks and then at birth.
  • I'm BNeg.
Dont worry about it. That is what Rh immunoglobulin is for.
It sounds scary, but doctors are educated on this.
I work in a laboratory and in transfusion services. It is completely routine to test new moms antenatal and postpartum.
  • Im confused about this as well for a different reason. I could have sworn i was A-. I have doNated blood and had another kid. I got alot of injections and i guess just assumed one was the right one. Now when she did blood typing i was A+. Now im a biology major and know blood type cant just switch but whybin the world do i remember being A- so vividly?
  • Is it true that if you and your partner are both rh- you can skip the shot? I'm b- and my husband isn't sure of his blood type...so I'm curious to know.
  • You could potentially skip, but I am sure the hospital would insist on giving the shots anyway. They could be seriously liable if the baby ends up RH+. Cases have happened before where the husband was not the father of the baby and then the child ended up with erythroblastosis fetalis.
  • Yikes. Well, I'm 110% certain my husband is the father...but I'll get the shot regardless. Haha

Depend on your doctor I guess. My midwife said if my DH goes and gets labs drawn for his blood type to confirm if he's positive or negative that I will NOT have to get the injection if he's negative. So DH is getting blood work done next week and if he's negative we just need to bring in the paperwork to my next appointment. I've read some places make you get it anyway though bc I guess you never know.
  • I'm o negative and this is my 7th pregnancy due to miscarriages, from my experience you have to get an injection of anti-d each trine, after. 13 weeks that you have any spotting or bleeding. It is also standard practice to receive one at 28 weeks as purely precaution, as mentioned above and also when the baby is born but only if the baby has a different blood type. This protects against future pregnancies.

You were probably a weak D back in the day that was or was not caught. Methods and reagents have changed.
If you are weak D pos, and not caught, it's ok to be labeled as pos in the donation realm. No harm for A pos patients to get A Neg blood.
Being a biology major, you should research weak d a learn about it. I have a BS is biology and am now a Medical Laboratory Scientist. I LOVE blood banking! I want to pursue getting a specialist in blood banking. (Which is a lab equivalent to a master's degree specific to blood banking).

Blood banking is more complex than A,B,O and Rh.
