I'm 37 weeks 1 day with my first and have no signs of colostrum. I'm worried I'll deliver and have nothing to offer my baby...is anyone else in the same camp or is it normal to not have it yet?
Mine did not show up until my first two latched. I'm expecting the same with this one. (Or in other words I'm hoping my boobs don't leak til at least baby is here lol)
Also in my BFing class the lactation consultant said women often mistake colostrum for dry skin. I Think this happened to me. Thought I just had dry flaky nipples, but now think it might've been colostrum. Good news is, this could mean you might not leak once your milk comes in (no guarantees!)
Don't worry! I didn't have anything until DD#1 started to latch. We were able to nurse for 13 months. When the time comes, your body will know what to do!!
I had the "flaky nipples" too at 37 weeks... It turns out it was a little colostrum. I'm 38+2 and if I find a duct that's full I can actually squeeze it and a little will come out now.
This is my 3rd term pregnancy and I've never had any sign of fluid from my nipples until delivery. I had no supply issues and nursed my other two for over a year.
I'm 37+4 and still nothing from my boob tubes, but apparently this is normal. Part of me is stressing that I'll be as dry as a bone for my poor baby when she comes, but the other part of me is trying to listen to all the nurses, STM's and science that keep saying this is totally normal and during the birthing process a lot of hormonal reactions will happen that kick my boobs into gear.. Sometimes it's just hard not to worry even when everyone tells you not to.
It is a misconception that you would be leaking be or have milk yet, mainly from movies and the media. I'm a perinatal nurse, it's totally fine that you don't and it has no bearing on breastfeeding. Sometimes when you are STM and your prolactin receptors have already been established your milk will come in faster but still then most STM still don't have it for a couple days and only have colostrum. This is normal.
