Trying to Get Pregnant

Low BBT?

Hello ladies...

Some of you know, but after ttc a while, I went into my ob gyn with wacky charts (low temps and No pattern) and tests were ran that ultimately led to a thyroid cancer diagnosis and an autoimmune disease called hashimotos.

Thyroid removed on Oct 1, and now doctors are keeping me on a synthroid dose of 100mcg, which keeps me hyperthyroid (because one is more likely to stay cancer free while hyperthyroid). Symptoms that that I just have to "live with" include sleeplessness and shaky hands. The doctors said I should be able to conceive this way because my T4 is perfect.

I received labs recently that said I'm cancer free now... Which is exciting, but additional lab confirmed my hyperthyroid status (tsh 0.15) *optimal is 1*

It is my understanding, that consistently low temps (under 97.5) point too hypothyroidism... And my body definitely stuck true to that in the past, hence how we found this medical dilemma... But now I am HYPER thyroid... Definitely without a doubt... And my temps are low....? I started temping again this morning because we are being medically "unbenched" soon and I wanted to get back in the habit. I was really excited to, for the first time, have pretty charts.

I plan on calling doctor Monday, because I know I need her advice... But in the mean while I was wondering if anyone had ideas as to other reasons it might be so low?

I enjoyed only one glass of wine hours before bed, drink lots of water, sleep in the buff under tons of blankets with the fan on, I did not drink water or make Movements other than a reach to my side table before temping. And I don't *think* I mouth breath....? It had been tenish hours since I had ate. Temped at 5am. am having a bit of trouble falling asleep but was asleep for good by 1. I do toss and turn a lot.

I researched hyperthyroid (over active thyroid) and low BBT but all research points to only hypo (underactove thyroid) causing low BBT.... But then again... Technically I don't have a thyroid... So that would be underactive... But the Meds trick my body into thinking my thyroid is overactive so that it suppresses my leftover thyroid cells (to keep them quite.... When they get Loud they grow cancer) . *there are leftover cells because one can never fully remove all thyroid cells as it is wrapped around your vocal cords

Sorry for all the words..... I just wanted to be detailed because I thought it would be helpful in finding an answer.

I really wanted to be *normal* again... Boo for an unexpected low BBT. :(

Thank you for all the support!

  • Yay for being cancer free!!!!! Congrats!
My bbt when I was orally temping was VERY low. At one point, 95. Quickly realized I needed to switch.

I'd suggest just giving 2-3 days vaginally temping to see. If those are within a "normal" range, you'd know
    A. You breath through your mouth
    B. Your temps are okay or they're a concern.

You're not anywhere in a cycle yet that switching will make a difference.
If you're getting the same temps, then you can discuss with your doc and return to oral.

Fwiw, my pre-o temps range from 96.9-97.5 and when I temp at random points in the day (because I'm apparently now obsessed with my body temps) I'm within a normal 98 range (active temp. Not bbt) so I don't think 97.05 is exceptionally low

  • Mine is usually below 98 before O. You can go into FF and look for charts w certain criteria. 97 is not really that low.
  • My pre-o temps are also 96.9 - 97.4 - also higher if i 'test' my thermometer at random points in the day

  • I have had the clinical hypothyroidism (sort of borderline) for awhile and was put on levothyroxine to get me back to normal. I have had normal thyroid levels ( tsh=1.99 and T4= 1.06) for only a month or so but my temps are still as you describe (consistently under 97.5). I temp by mouth and I think you get slightly cooler temps there anyway. I don't know if this helps.

I'm sorry for your cancer diagnosis! It sucks that you have to be in a hyperthyroid state now.

  • Thank you so much!!! That makes me feel a lot better. I kept reading on multiple sites that "normal" was 97.5.... And it was making me nervous!
What about your temps after 0? Theoretically.... I should be post O. (I am on Day 26). I only started temping now so I could get back in the habit for my next cycle...

I will try temping vaginally. When my temps got wacky when we first started ttc, I tempted orally, switched to vag, and then went to the doc bc they remained wacky. Today was my first day back to temping.

@evenakker so your response leads me to believe that perhaps our temp is decided by our actual thyroid function and not what our Meds make us. Sorry your thyroid is also giving you trouble. :(

Hm. I'm sure my doctor is going to just roll her eyes when I call freaking out about my temps... But LAST time I went into a doctor with a crazy temp chart I walked out with cancer so.... Ya know.... Lol.

    Edit bc typo

  • I have hypothyroidism with normal levels controls by medication and my temps throughout my cycle (pre and post O) have ranged from 96.5 to 98.2. Post O are in the 97/98 range. I don't know if that helps

  • Thank you. I feel a whole whole lot better now. I wonder why some sites say lower than 97.5 is low?! Ugh I need to get off Dr. Google. Thanks!!! :)

  • My pre-o temps are always below 97.5 without any thyroid issues, post-o is 97.5-98 but rarely above that. I wouldn't read much more about temps unless you continue to have really irregular charts, and even then, just go back to the doctor. Dr. Google will make you symptom spot everything!

  • My pre-O temps are always below 97.5, and usually below 97.2. My post-O temps are generally above 97.8. I don't have any thyroid issues.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, just keep temping to look for that overall temp shift to indicate O. Avoid Dr. Google at all costs!! And congrats on being cancer-free!!

         TTC #1 --- BFP #1 5/15, loss at 5 weeks --- BFP #2 12/15, loss at 4+3 --- RE testing 3/16 normal, still trying for our rainbow

  • I'm so glad you're cancer free and that you'll be unbenched soon! My BBT has been 96.6 (goes up to upper 97, lower 98 range post O) my entire life and my thyroid levels are normal according to recent tests. I have a few friends whose temps are in the 95 range and have never made it to 98 unless they have a fever. Everyone is different.
  • Happy cancer free diagnosis!! Wooooooot!

My pre O temps average around 96.5 so definitely lower than "normal." My post O temps slowly climb from 97.0 up. I have no thyroid or other major health concerns. I will say though that I also have low blood pressure (average 90/60), so I'm not sure if that's connected.

  • I have low blood pressure as well! Hm. Either way I'm glad to see other ladies out there with my temp range. Huge sigh of relief!

Thanks for all the well wishes/congrats ladies... I still can't believe it myself. Waiting for the big "just kidding"... Lol. I think it will be real when we start ttc again this next cycle. :)

  • My FP temps (so far - this is only my second cycle temping) are entirely below 97.5, mostly below 97.0 and as low as low 96s. My LP temps are in the mid 97s to low 98s. I recently had my TSH checked and it was within normal range.

    Congrats on being cancer free!
  • My preO temps are consistently in the mid 96s until after O since having my second. I was successfully able to conceive my third with temps this way. The main thing is to see a temp shift. I was worried too that my preO temps could be an indicator, but was able to find out that if you temp really early in the morning (which I do at 0500) that they could be lower.

I am so glad you are cancer free. Praying it stays that way. Good luck TTC.

    Same.
  • Hmm. I have low blood pressure too. Wonder if that is connected to lower BBT?
  • My pre-o temps are always below 97.5. I think that's pretty standard

    2012: Baby #1

October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

    My Charts since 2009

  • I have PCOS but have a normal (on the lowish side) TSH, so I'm not hypo. My pre-O temps range from 96.7-97.2, and post-O ranges from 97.5-98.0.

  • Thanks ladies :) am going to switch to vag temping and at 7am instead 5am. I'll be back in the habit by my next cycle and fx for actually seeing a thermal shift!

  • Talk to you doc to be sure. I'm hypothyroid. It's well managed and my levels are always within range but my WTO temps are consistently around 96.25.
  • Congrats on being cancer free.

My cover line is typically 97.1. I have zero issues with my thyroid.
  • I usually temp at 0500 and get mid 96s. I woke up late today at 0630 and it was 97.3. Those couple hours can make a difference.
  • I don't have any problems with thyroid and my follicular phase temps are typically 97.2 and below, often in the high 96s.
Same. If you want to, you can temp vaginally and that might yield more reliable patterns, but not necessarily higher temps.
