Anyone else not pumping at night??

Is there anyone else who doesn't wake up to pump? My LO usually eats around 7-7:30 pm. I usually try and top her off again around 8-8:30 when she's ready for bed. Sometimes she'll want more sometimes she won't. If she does it's always more of a top off and not a whole feeding. Anyways she's been pretty consistent about sleeping from 8:30ish until around 3 am sometimes 4. Sometimes it's shorter though. This has been for about the past 5-7 days. Anyways with going back to work I don't want to have to wake up in the middle of the night to pump if I don't have to. I'm going to need as much sleep as I can get. When she does wake up I no longer feel engorged but maybe just a little more full then during the day. When she does eat she only eats off one side so I just pump the other while I'm rocking her back to sleep. Anyone else not waking up for an extra pumping session? Should I be concerned about my supply dipping? She seems satisfied with her daytime feelings eating every 2-4 hours depending on the day/time of day. I already have a pretty good freezer stash as I've always done at least one MOTN session feeding on only one side and pumping the other since about week 4 and freezing whatever I would pump.

Re: Anyone else not pumping at night??

  • I have never woke up in the middle of the night to pump. I sleep at night when baby is sleeping, so if he sleeps 8-10 hours straight (which he has quite often ... I know I'm lucky!), then I sleep 8-10 hours straight. Sometimes I wake up with very full breasts or have leaked, but once he nurses they feel normal again :) I haven't had any issues with my supply dipping. I go back to work on Monday and plan to nurse at 6 am before work, and after work until he goes to sleep. I'll pump every 3 hours at least at work.

  • I don't wake to pump either. I used to be really concerned about supply but I figure it will all even out and eventually my body will figure out I don't need that nighttime milk.
  • No middle of the night pumping sessions for me, either. We do substitute a bottle of formula right before bed and I pump after we've gotten him down, but I figure all babies learn to sleep through the night at some point and formula hasn't always been a fall back. Our bodies are designed, generally speaking, to adjust to baby's schedule.

  • Same. I like my sleep
  • My LO is still up every 3 hours most nights. The most I've ever gotten was 4. There is no way I can bring myself to get out of bed to pump when he starts sleeping longer. I'm exhausted! I didn't even realize this was an issue until I read about people doing it on here...glad to hear some of you have skipped it with no effect on your supply. Thanks for asking this!
  • I haven't pumped at all yet, EBFing, and we get a 5-6h (8h a couple times) stretch. No supply problems.

  • I don't!!

  • If baby sleeps longer than four hours I have to pump. I get so full of milk and it's uncomfortable and he won't latch on when he does wake up if they're too full.

  • I exclusively pump and supplement, and yes I wake up once or twice at night to pump to complete my 6x a day cycle. The baby wakes up to feed anyway (we do breast milk all day then formula at night) -so when she wakes, after I feed her, I pump. It is exhausting-not sure how much longer I can keep it up but i don't make much milk to begin with so every pump session is vital for us :(
  • I don't wake up to pump unless I am engorged and uncomfortable. This doesn't happen often any more. We usually get a 5 hour stretch most nights. Supply has been fine during the day. I give those moms credit who have to wake to pump to keep up thier supply.
  • My LO sleeps 8 hours straight and I do too. There's no way I would get up to pump. I need my rest and my supply hasn't changed.
  • OP we have almost the exact timeframe as you with sleep and I don't pump. I've been fine for about a week like that and noticed only the littlest dip a couple days after but it's now back up.

I did, however, get a clogged duct yesterday that I'm still working out. I'm not sure if it's from the extended periods at night with no drainage or the fact that I was out and about and missed a feed and then had a poor pump session.
  • my baby usually sleeps from 9pm to 7 or 8am, and I rarely pump. my body had figured out I didn't need that milk and I wasn't getting engorged... then she started waking up the last few nights. so last night I was engorged again.
  • Baby sleeps 7pm-7am, I don't pump at any point during that time and my supply is fine.
  • She is starting to sleep 7-8 hour stretches so I am getting up to pump. I have no time (she only naps 40 mins) during the day and if I do find time... I get nothing when I pump! So I do it to build a stash and so she can continue having a bottle a few days a week.

Night time milk has different hormones and compounds in it than day time milk. Some scientist believe that these hormones and chemicals found in milk can help regulate the baby's circadian rhythms before they manufacture these chemicals on their own. So unless there's a particular reason I want my baby to be sleepy during the day, I see no reason to want to stock up on night time breast milk. Mind you, I'm not having a supply problem and while I do get a little engorged, I have faith that my body will continue to self regulate.

  • I don't! But ds wakes up 2-4 times to feed anyway.

Who are you lucky ladies who's babies are sleeping 8+ hours?!! I get excited when he gets 3 hours in, feeds, goes back to sleep. As opposed to his usual, wake, stay awake for hour plus , sleep 30 min and wake again. Rinse, repeat :/

  • I've done it only twice and that's because I was engorged and leaking all over the bed. Supply seems to be fine and I've got a small stash to allow me to leave DD2 with someone else when I have to go out for more than 3 hours. Still trying to figure out what I'll do in terms of preparing a stash for when I go back to work in 6 weeks.
  • I don't wake up to pump and I pump twice a day at work.
