I had to pop in from lurking to say that if my OB refered to any part of my child as a "turtle" or "hamburger", I'd be transferring to a different practice.
FTR, "turtle sign" is actually a pretty common term for sex determinations, even if it isn't scientific. "Hamburger" is frequently used for girls as well.
The rest of the thread, nope. Trust your tech.
I lurk. I snark. I offer sound advice if you're not BSC. You may not like me. I'm okay with it.

Yeah, my son doesn't have a turtle, he has a penis. There is not an amphibian up in my shit.

Just curious but since when and who uses it? I've been having babies since 2004 and I've yet to hear of this. Turtles and hamburgers are animals and food. I guess depending on who you are they're both food. Not sex organs. My kids all have and always have had penises and vaginas.

4. Paying someone to determine the sex of your child is silly.
I used to think paying a boutique for the sex determination was ridiculous. However, SO's military schedule was sending him away during the anatomy scan and at the time he was possibly going to be deployed from 32 weeks of pregnancy through baby's first year of life. This allowed him to be involved in something with pregnancy and baby. Although at 17 weeks I had no clue what the heck the tech was showing us when she said boy, I just went with it and didn't buy anything until by anatomy scan at 21 weeks. I won't do it for the next one unless similair circumstances arise. But there are legitimate reasons to have one done, we found out the hard way.

Eh. Maybe a regional thing. I've heard it quite a bit around these parts, more so in the ultrasound boutique realm. Turtle sign is also a term used regarding shoulder dystocia.

Key words there : ultrasound boutique realm. That would be why I've never heard it. I tend to stick with the medical professionals when it comes to my babies.

no. Here's what you said "I saw horror stories of 15 week ultrasounds being wrong" you're not quoting anybody because if you were, you would have quoted them.
I'm not here to throw you under the bus because I think you were using language a bit flippantly without realizing the effect it might have. I wrote out this whole story that somebody I know is dealing with right now. I decided against posting it because many of you on this board have not had your 20 week ultrasounds yet and there is no need to frighten you about "unlikely but possible things" that might be found. Suffice it to say, her story is a horror story. And I've been seeing it unfold since she found out. And it has to be one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen.
Just know that some of TB ladies might be dealing with something similar and haven't had the heart to talk about it yet. Or, like me, they know somebody who is dealing with something similar.
Just be really careful about keeping things in context around here. Intentions were probably perfectly fine but just.. to keep in mind.
As far as wanting to buy things before knowing the sex of your baby, you should do what we did and just buy stuff that's really cool that you like without really caring. Society might tell you that rocketships are for boys and ballet slippers are for girls but society can suck it. My little girl has a ton of cool space themed onesies and a ton of blue and grey pinstriped stuff (back when i was sure she was a he). And she is totally going to geek out the mat ward in them
As a sonographer I do not feel that is the correct angle to determine the sex. We look for the bladder and femurs in a transverse plane. This is a profile image. It very well could be a boy but I would not say 100% just by that image. I refuse to reveal sex before 18 weeks at the very earliest. It can still be very swollen at 15 weeks and girls often look like boys. But honestly we don't care about your baby's sex. We are trained to focus on the anatomy and search for abnormalities. Learning your baby's sex should just be the icing on the cake after learning that it is indeed healthy. I do know fellow sonographers that use the "turtle" and "hamburger" sign. I personally don't use them but it does not really bother me that some do.
