But also, this just constantly goes back to viewing the refugees as terrorists with absolutely no basis other than their nationality and / or religion. If not for that, there would be no comparisons to 9/11. Muslim DOES NOT equal terrorist.
I highly doubt we would even be having this conversation about refugees from other (predominantly Christian) European nations.
I never said Muslim. We are talking about the refugees from Syria. ISIS is in Syria, has been in Syria, and has taken over Syria. No I don't think we should let anymore or the 2000 we already have let in. I'm not looking at them bc of their skin color or religion. I would be saying the same thing about white Christians that were coming from Syria if ISIS were white Christians. It's not a race or religion prejudice. It's an ISIS prejudice. ISIS happens to come from Syria. Therefore, no. I am not supportive of possible ISIS coming into our country posed as something they're not.
If you saw and heard some people from California had a flesh eating disease and they went to Nevada and wiped out hundreds of people in Nevada would you not be hesitant to welcome people with California licenses into your state?
Would I be making it a prejudice issue or "racial" issue bc they're from California? Or would I be making it an issue bc I've seen and heard that the flesh eating virus is killing people in masses?? I am my children's protector. They don't have anyone else. I get angry when outside entities make it difficult for me to do my job.
ETA: Pretty sure we would be having this conversation if this were "other predominately Christian European nations." Never have I mentioned race or religion on my own or made that a factor in any of my arguments. Thanks for proving to me what I've always experienced with liberals. Never looking at the actual problem and calling it what it is. Instead lets make this about race, religion, and the ways those people are different from us. Not a chance lady. I don't have a racist bone in my body and neither will my children. Don't be a stereotype. Be an individual.

Dayyuuumm! I must say that I agree with this statement 10000000%. It isn't about race or religion. It is about safety. Period.
Just throwing it out there that their "plan" if it can be called that is the exact opposite of what you are playing at. Daesh/Isis/Isil/The Federateed Douche Nozzles of Muslimhood want to sew enmity and discord between western nations and innocent Muslim refugees fleeing from places like Syria. If these terrorists can convince western nations that Muslims are too scary to help, it will cause good, honest Muslim people to become even more disenfranchised and frustrated with western nations, raising the likelihood that they get fed up with hypocritical western ideals, driving them into extremists arms. The same nations that claim to be bastions of freedom and opportunity look like racist xenophobes, key words: look like. For countries like the United States to turn their backs on refugees would only make our enemies stronger. Don't play into their hand. On top of all of that, none of the attackers in Paris were even refugees. They were all born in places like Belgium, France, and Brussels. Does this mean we should stop international travel into the USA because it's too risky? I sure hope nobody thinks that would ever be a good decision.
To finish, check out history books in regard to how American's have traditionally viewed refugees. It's nearly universal historically that we haven't wanted to allow refuge inside the USto foreign groups being terrorized because we are in fact traditionally xenophobic, and a bit racist here in the US. I know, shocking! But let's not continue a bad cycle because we are freaked out by boogeymen that don't really exist in the simple ways we think they do.
I'd be interested to know how you are so for sure of what their plan is. Either way their plan is threatening my life and loved ones. I don't see how these people are going to go running back into their arms after being tortured and seeing the fear they're causing the nations around them, but maybe that's just me. Secondly, again, I find it ironic again that this is being turned around (AGAIN) and being made to look like it is a racial issue. I guess that's what some people need to sleep at night instead of facing the root problem at hand. That's fine but understand you are projecting and accusing racism where it doesn't exist. It is a safety issue, period. No amount of calling it racism or religious prejudice is going to change the fact that the real and only issue is safety of our children and families. In American history we have always stood up for our homeland and protected our homeland. I've not read a history book where that's called racism.

We are going to have a gender reveal party. However, nothing really over the top. Just a get together with family eat food and play a few silly games and have everyone guess what they think it is. Then reveal what it is. Nothing over the top. Just really an excuse to get together since we live a good hour plus drive away from them and it's hard to get together due to schedule conflicts and stuff sometimes.
Pitbulls..... I am an avid pit bull supporter. They have a bad rep. People in general seem to forget that all dogs can bite when provoked. All dogs are animals and still have instincts like prey drive and be territorial. Pit Bulls is a type of dog that wants to please its owner more than anything else and it will do anything to please its owner even if it means getting hurt, fighting, etc. Unfortunately, Aholes take advantage of that and try to fight them, etc. If you neglect your dog, no matter what the breed, then you are asking for trouble. Pit Bulls just don't turn on people for no reason. We have one that is five years old. (He is my profile pic) He is somewhat dog aggressive, but only to strange dogs. He is fine with our other two. (Our little dog does not like the pit bull though so we keep them separated). Other than that he is a big ole stubborn baby. On the other hand, there is no doubt in my mind that if someone were to try to harm one of us, he would eat them alive. He will protect his family! Common sense pretty much says don't leave your children and dogs (of any kind) together unattended. That is just asking for trouble. Also a lot of people do not properly identify pit bulls. In a dog attack they see a dog with a big head and ASSume that it is a pit bull. A loal news station did an experiment online a few years ago where they put a bunch of similar looking dogs of different breeds and asked the public to pick out the pit bull. The percentage of correct answers was very low.

NOLA520Considering that you're the one making this about party lines and bashing me based on your assumption of my political leanings, I'd say you're the one acting like a stereotype and not an individual. I can be an empathetic person and belong to any (or no) party.
And your argument is still about justifying prejudice against innocent people simply for being from the same place as bad people. Even taking their race and religion out of the equation, it's still heartless, cruel, and exclusionary toward people who desperately need help and compassion.
Where have I bashed you? I don't know where party lines come in either. In the name of the safety of MY children and as I stated in the beginning I will absolutely be called heartless if it means the safety of my children. If you're saying I'm "bashing" you bc I corrected you about my points not being racist driven and that your point of view is stereotypical of liberals I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. It's in my experience that liberals have a hard time looking at the bigger picture for the greater good and turning a debate from that picture into a skewed and unnecessary racial or prejudice problem. Don't get me wrong. As I stated in the early part of this: I hate what the innocent people and babies are going through. It makes my heart bleed. But not enough to jeopardize my children.
ETA: All my points are driven as a mother wanting to protect her children and understanding that we are going into a world where no one else is going to fight for your children's safety but you. I'm not justifying those bastards actions of killing and brutalizing those people. I'm just saying I don't like the chance of that happening being raised by bringing possible hiding ISIS in the refugee groups into our country. Purely as a concerned mother.

I have a few issues with the refugee debate and I would honestly like someone to answer them.
1. What EXACTLY is the vetting process for these refugees? I've tried finding it and have come up empty handed.
2. Why is it that all of a sudden the whole country wants to help these people? For YEARS everyone has said that America needs to mind their own business and leave other countries be. Our military was in Iraq helping them to build their own military, but then it was a brilliant idea to pull all of our troops out and now how is the quality of life of the Iraqi citizens? How many innocent Iraqi citizens have died since we've pulled our troops out because of the ongoing conflict. But why aren't we talking about that? Because the same people bringing the Syrian refugees here are the same people who chose to pull our troops out. DH is in the Army, so don't get me wrong I would rather him not have to go off to war, but my issue is that the safety of these citizens didn't matter 2 years ago to anyone, so why now? ISIS has been killing these people for years.
3. Continuation of my 2nd point, if as American citizens it is our responsibility to help these children, why are we not helping all the children of the world? What makes these children our responsibility to care for? Why are the starving children that our already inside our borders not a bigger priority for the American citizens or the federal government?
4. I don't give a flying f*** what the "goal" of ISIS is, whether or not it's to make us hate a certain group of people or run all of these refugees out of Syria. The ONLY goal that I know FOR SURE and the ONLY one that I care about is the fact that they WANT TO KILL US. Their main goal is to kill us all and make us suffer. They are barbarians with no respect for life. They are sick. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about what they do to people. And I'll be DAMNED if I will support anything that makes the chance of them succeeding in killing my family any easier. Yes there are already ISIS members on our soil and if that doesn't terrify anyone then they need to watch the news.
5. And lastly, if one more person says the word XENOPHOBIA one more time I'm going to lose my shit. My grandparents are Italian immigrants. They came to this country at a time when the entire country hated Italians. They refused to teach their children their native language for fear that they would be bullied in school. My grandpa learned to speak English by listening to the radio. They were very poor for a very long time. He worked so hard and managed to provide for 6 children. I love the fact that America was a place my grandparents were able to come to and make a life. "The country of opportunity". There is not a single bone in my body that thinks anything badly of immigrants. There is not a single racist bone in my body. So if one more person tells me I'm xenophobic because I don't agree with bringing these refugees here, I'm going to lose my cool.
@JessicaB0627 ... Sounds like your grandparents' situation is really close to the refugees' current situation. People hate them, they have nothing, etc. Shouldn't this make the refugees' scenario more relatable to you? Being close with an ethnicity or group of people should be all the more reason to treat people in similar situations respectfully, and shouldn't be used as a blanket justification for why you aren't racist. In fact, if you can personally relate to the situation and still fear them and deny basic human privileges based on ethnicity, that seems even colder.
I'm not well-informed enough to make a strong case one way or the other, I just always caution people against the whole, "oh my best friend is (insert race/ethnicity/sexuality here), so I can make fun of them" attitude.
This is just to the last part because it's something that I have an issue with.
History books are predominantly written by white men. There is of course going to be skewed Information - ie the 5th grade text book this year that was called out for calling slaves "migrant" workers, rather than slaves and that many of them enjoyed their work.
A skewed view that tried to make our country look better in history than it was.

I just hope that if I ever needed to seek refuge in another country that I wouldn't be banned because of a stereotype against American's that we are all likely to commit school shootings against innocent children....

(1) @dshannah provided some good ones so I'll skip this one
(2) Because the problems in Syria, in some large measures, are a result of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the continued hodgepodge of stability in the Middle East. Also, because the US is allied with Israel, any events in the Middle East will be the US's business (and if you really want to debate the alliance with Israel, I'd suggest taking this off the thread and PMing). I suppose you're also saying that all these problems happened when the troops pulled out, and that therefore all them Liberals with their peace signs and such who wanted to pull out are to blame in some fashion. Thing is, actually, that's not quite accurate and requires a huge answer but essentially boils down to: Republicans and Democrats both wanted troops out for various reasons, and you should clean up the messes you create. Which goes to my last point in this section - an answer to "we never cared about anything outside of our borders before so why now?" - because the US is, in part, a reason for the current situation in Syria (and the return of the Taliban to Afganistan and the militant groups attacking citizens in Iraq, etc) and in general, you should clean up or at least try and clean up your messes.Just a brief history lesson: WW1 - the US entered in late because of (brace yourself) xenophobic attitudes that marred foreign policy; WW2 - the US refused refugee ships because (brace yourself again) xenophobic attitudes towards Europeans,Jews, Communists and I suppose Nazis. Xenophobia is a fear of the outsider, and in this day in age with all we know and all the info we have access to - it doesn't make sense.
(3) Ah, the classic - why can't we focus on our own before helping the world? Well, in part, because there have been a tonne of Republican bills that were made into law that actually screw up lower income children and their parents because something-something-bootstraps. But those are, of course, State matters. Refugees, Immigration, Foreign Affairs - those are Federal matters. Two different governments that function almost completely independently, as stated in the Constitution. The Obamas actually have put forth measures to combat starving children (like Michelle Obama's programs for school kids without breakfast) and of course, Obamacare actually helps poorer children like never before (or at least, never since FDR)! At the state level, things are different, of course. Added to that, there is a couple of things I see as hinderances to helping kids out here that, if you want to help, I would suggest looking into: There is no right to education in this country (though there is a right to guns, make of that what you will), there is inadequate mental health treatment centers - actually there is also a lack of drug related treatment centers that we can add to the list, and there seems to be a sentiment that the poor should help themselves - which is strange given how stacked the odds are against them and the average American too, for that matter. So in short: Two different branches of govt, and people are complex human beings that are capable of helping both kids at home and abroad (no really, we are! Just like we can spend one thread talking about peeing while sneezing and another debating geopolitics)
(4) This is not a question, so I am not actually sure you wanted a response to this?
(5) Oh, brace yourself again - you know I had to do this: Xenophobia.
Hope that helped clarify a few things without being overly cheeky.

Here's the first result for "refugee immigration process": https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/refugees-asylum/refugees
And if you want to know how long all that takes, the official government answer is 1 year to 18 months (https://m.state.gov/md210135.htm) but from Muslim/former Communist or Socialist countries it usually takes much longer--this woman from Bosnia waited over two years (https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2015/11/18/9756590/refugee-process-us), and the family turned away from Indiana this week has been waiting for three (https://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/11/18/nyregion/11th-hour-detour-puts-family-in-connecticut-as-indiana-bars-syrian-refugees.html?_r=0&referer=https://www.google.com/).
