@vinerie I love my Chihuahua and he's never attacked anyone.
I also love all the pitbulls I've saved from being fought, abandoned, and abused. I've not been attacked by any of them. In fact, the ones that are trained to fight are only aggressive towards other dogs not people. I think all dogs have the ability to be vicious and attack people. I don't believe it is the breed. My pitbulls have been the most loving and wonderful dogs I've ever owned.
@TXmamatobe I'm completely fine with people who don't agree with me, as I've stated several times. I simply don't agree with somebody questioning somebody else's integrity simply because of a differing opinion. Kinda makes you feel crappy, just saying.
That escalated quickly.
Just like flame free confessions, UOs are not flame free. I say things fully prepared to get flamed if someone disagrees.
If it's okay for you to be blunt, it's okay for someone else to be.

I said we should ban dogs and Syrians today. Was totally prepared for any flaming that would come from that. I am a big girl, and can stand by my convictions.
It is called an opinion for a reason. Everyone is entitled to have their own view point. Just because someone doesn't agree, doesn't mean I would leave a community that has been supportive for the real purpose of why we are here- to prepare for pregnancy and having a baby.
@yogahh Glad to know you won't be moving to any corn fields. If my passionate speech didn't work, I was going to ask if you've ever seen Children of the Corn, because I'd take my chances in NYC over those evil kids.
Ok, I have another one since its been front and center in the news this week, and slightly touched upon here....I don't think we should be allowing any refugees in the country right now. The #1 job of the POTUS is to keep the citizens safe. And if there is even the slightest chance that one refugee can cause the type of harm and chaos we saw in Paris, then we need to take precautions. I am all for helping in safe ways, and feel for the children in particular that are fleeing Syria. But allowing 10,000 in the country at this very fragile time seems risky. I found this opinion piece in the Post today summed up my views on this debate.
Living in NYC, the fear is real. I try not to dwell on it when on the subway, or shopping in some of the more busy areas, but we need to be aware that the threat is real and tangible.
I was watching Friday night (live) and in one breath the news anchor said that the terrorist website had a statement that said this isn't over and American blood is the sweetest and it will be happening soon... The anchor never missed a beat and said: There is no threat to the US... WHAT?! Hello?! I hate what those people are going through in Syria and that little boy who wasn't much older than DD washing up on shore after drowning made my heart bleed. However, being Republican I tend to agree with the motto to make sacrifices for the greater good instead of for the individual. I look at those babies and children and what they're having to go through but also look at my growing belly and my child and think no way am I going to choose those children over mine. There has to be a different way to help them. The diseases they'll bring and the danger they bring is not worth it for me and my family to be honest. I'll gladly be considered heartless if it means the safety of my children and family.

@buzzbee24 fair enough, I get it. But would it make you feel very good if somebody called you a liar and told you you're cheating the system?
If I knew what I was doing was right I really wouldn't care what anyone else thought.
I do think it becomes personal when people have loved ones who are impacted by certain situations, such as service animals. While I don't have a personal stake on this topic, if we were talking about education and a parent were to post something that I felt cheated the system, even if it was legal, like @laurenmdrn16 I would definitely post a passionate statement against it. When it's personal to someone expect a strong opinioned post. The thing is you won't know what really bothers people until you post because we don't know each other's backgrounds.

Just as I was speaking from personal experience being disabled and have service animals. But I understand. It wasn't at all the fact that she had an opinion different from mine, I just don't agree with comments such as calling someone a liar and telling them they're cheating the system. That's making it personal when it shouldn't be. Never once said I was leaving tb either, I said I will either choose to not partake in future uo Thursdays or will choose to think long and hard before I post something again. There's a difference between flaming, which I can 100% handle and I 100% expect when stating something that several people may not agree with, and questioning somebody's integrity. When that line is crossed, yes I have a problem. Anyway, carry on.
Is someone really cheating the system if the system explicitly allows it?
If the dog has not been trained to be a service animal either by the individual or a prifessional, then yes. @ncm0328 explained in a later post that she had trained her dog in this manner; which is fine since the system allows it. (Whether or not it should be allowed is a separate issue.) However, suggesting that someone claim a dog as a service dog if they have allergies in order to not have to rehome it does count in my book as exploiting the system. The animal needs to be trained for the job.
I know that so many people do it now, but finding out the sex of the baby over the phone SO early just seems...so boring and anti climatic.
Ugh, I was thinking the same thing when my doctor told me she'd let me know the sex over the phone. Ah well, I plan to celebrate with cake to make more of an oomph reaction
Waaaay too heavy this week. I blame the damn presidential debates. This is a preggers site right? And as for all the feels, so many feels... It's the internet, you're lucky if you have ONE sympathizer and not a flood of trolls. (Not calling anyone on here a troll, just a general statement). This weeks UO gots me like
Hm ... I realize that this is a highly contentious issue, I am a die hard liberal and of course, I am only a US resident which may cause the flames to burn, but I'm going to weigh in on the whole refugee thing:
(1) The screening process for refugees is, like, extreme. That's why the wait time between application and admittance is so long. Added to that, the previous refugees that have been accepted and come to live in the US have never, not once, been arrested for any domestic terrorism/links to domestic terrorism, etc. The idea that this is a fragile time is prevalent right now because fear is high, but the likelihood of admitting militants in with the refugees is very low. True, not impossible, but then this is a country that already is very comfortable with such a high insurance rate (see the school shootings vs. gun control debate). And don't forget - the CIA and border patrol agencies are onboard with the refugee thing. They have already made statements saying that they can handle it and are confident about it. Since they are actually on the font lines of this (rather than, say, Ted Cruz of Mike Huckabee or Chris Christie), then maybe we should believe them with their experience and knowledge and not politicians who are trying to monopolize on your worries?
(2) GOVERNORS CAN'T JUST BAN REFUGEES! Sorry for the caps, but this bothers me as a lawyer and a politics junkie. Refugees are a FEDERAL issue, not a state issue. What that means is that the federal government goes "Okay, this is our quota of refugees for the year, and here's where it makes sense to send them in the country" and that's that (If you still have some doubt look up the Refugee Act of 1980 and the USSC case of Hines v. Davidowitz). All the States can do is make things more difficult which will be a further strain on the federal government and by extension, all of us. How about them tax hikes, eh? Anyway, what this boils down to his Governors who can basically play on fears and xenophobia for votes without actually doing much but publicly disagreeing with the federal government. Literally - all your governor can do is sit on his or her hands and proclaim loudly that they do not like this and by hell or high water, this will not happen ... and then do nothing but rake in praise from Fox News because there's nothing actually to do.
Further, as an immigrant to the US (my husband is a dual Canadian-American citizen and we moved here a few years ago), these attitudes terrify me because of my status - how far is it to leap from "refugees drain our economy!" to "Immigrants come and take our jobs!" ? This is a land of immigrants, let us not forget, and it should be pointed out that if you're really going to fight terror on an international level - accepting the people who are running away from the very terrorists that are threatening world order is probably a smart move.
So, even though I don't get a vote (permanent resident, yo), I side with taking in those people who have lost everything in a war they didn't start and I trust the professionals tasked with screening them and keeping us safe. Not the governors and presidential hopefuls who apparently don't understand the basics of the Constitution they hold so dear.
1. Our border patrol sucks. Look at the Mexican surge that happened in TX, CA, NM, etc here recently and then we began having measles and other diseases that haven't been an issue for 50 years. The border patrol credibility sucks and their "structure" is flawed and needs to be re-worked. Also, the ones they are mostly letting in are young males bc in their culture women, children, elderly, and sick are useless. So, the pictures the media are sending out to create sympathy are false. They use gorilla (sp?) tactics which means they sneak attack to do the most damage and are absolute savages. They are very smart and tech savvy for the world we live in now so them finding ways to get around our difficult system isn't something to overlook.
2. They can't ban them and everyone knows that. I think in this situation it's nice to know my state has a governor who is opposed even if he can't do anything about it. It's very telling to have 35 states oppose the refugees coming over but have a federal government that still pushes it through. Thanks Obama.

If we are going to refuse refugees that desperately need our assistance, and if we are going to continue down this path toward (even greater) xenophobia and intolerance for those of other nationalities, then we should take down the Statue of Liberty.
As clearly evidenced in this thread, we are apparently no longer a nation (built my our IMMIGRANT ancestors) of caring, accepting people willing to shelter the "huddled masses yearning to breathe free." That sentiment matters even when it's brown people and even when they don't follow the same religion you do.
I really hope you are not calling those of us that are worried about potential terrorists and terror attacks in the country racist. Because that's where my mind goes when you say "that sentiment matter be even when it's brown people". If that was the intent of your statement, you couldn't be further from the truth, atleast in my case. It's one thing to voice opinions, but another to accuse people of racial biases.

I'm with @yogahh... I don't care if they're brown, purple, yellow, orange and/or believe in the Grand Pooba. The group of people we are dealing with pose too much of a threat. Our government, starting with Clinton, has made us vulnerable which has left us no choice but to watch out for our children. Who else is going to?? It sure as hell isn't our government. They are attempting to take better care of these refugees than their own people.

Just humor me for a minute... Could this just POSSIBLY been in their plan to infiltrate other counties? By pushing out the non-ISIS people and sending them running into the arms of other countries...How does that not sound like a viable plan for ISIS to put in action? To me that sounds like such an easy way to infiltrate. Can you at least humor me and admit that that COULD be a possibility?

I was waiting for someone to use the "Thanks Obama" thing, either really or ironically, so thanks for that.
Also - guerilla (not ctiticizing or anything just answering the sp? question).
As to the meat of it: Actually no. The measles thing? Not the Mexicans or any one else's fault. Measles is not a disease that waits in other countries, and is eradicated in this one - Anti-Vaxxers and such have brought a wave of these diseases to the front because they didn't vaccinate their kids. Those people from areas of the world with little to no vaccination are also at risk of exposure, but they're not the reason you need to fear those diseases.
Also, and really - where exactly are you getting that it's mostly young men? And where is it said that young men are not worthy of protection? Like, let's be realistic here - our culture also favours men over women (pay wage gap? Lack of abortion in states like TX? Oh, and the terrible maternity leave options here too, btw). So saying their culture devalues women is a bit of the pot calling the kettle back, I think. At the very least, we ought to recognize our similarities before hating others for them?
And to the border patrol - thing is, those two cases are actually not analogous. The influx of Mexican migrant workers illegally running to the US do not go through the screening process that refugees go through. So, if you really wanted to equate the Mexican influx to anything coming in from Syria you'd have to make the argument that the refugees actually aren't refugees at all - they're just running into the country undetected - which, I should probably mention before someone does in fact suggest this, would be false since there is absolutely no evidence of this.
I agree. It is very telling that so many states are opposing this. I just think it's telling for completely different reasons than you do, I think.
Again, I will mention, I am not a US citizen - I am just a resident, so I may be offering an opinion that is completely outside of what anyone here is used to due to where I grew up (Canada) and where I am from (Southern Europe), and you can take that for what it's worth, but I honestly think that fostering a culture of fear mongering does nothing but erode our own freedoms and rights, and that is not something I would want to participate in.

Winston Churchill, right? My family is the same and this is great in a way because I miss them desperately
One of my very good friends and her family is moving to Sweden in January. While I know these horrible attacks can happen anywhere, the thought of her in Europe where there is so much unrest makes me nervous. So I totally understand where you and your friend are coming from.
This is kind of ridiculous. Sweden is so much safer than any place in the U.S., mostly because they have stricter gun laws. My sister lives and works as a teacher in London (and her husband was commuting that day in 2005) and she's got two kids and we keep begging her to move back to the states so we can see her and them more. She refuses, because she's terrified of school shootings and gun violence.
Stop being afraid of foreign Muslims and start being afraid of the society of systemic hatred, violence and anger we ourselves have created.

1. They are the ones that are bringing in the diseases that have not been an issue. you're right the non vaccinators are putting their own children at risk but the diseases that are bringing a comeback have not been dormant and are just coming out of nowhere after not being around for 50 years. The people who haven't ever had the vaccinations from their countries are bringing them back here. 2. Young men are mostly being brought over according to all media outlets. Turn on the TV you'll see it. Yes, our culture has flaws when it comes to men and women but I think it's a gross comparison to compare womens wages vs their culture which supports Sharia law. The fact that a man makes more than me suck but on the scale of my wages vs Sharia Law??? Yeah, no comparison. I think Sharia Law goes a little beyond "devaluing" women. I don't want to get into the abortion debate bc it's going to create another 200 responses and it's exhausting. 3. The example I was using to make the point that our border patrol sucks was to highlight how their tactics and "procedures" suck and do not work not to argue whether Mexicans and Syrians are illegal vs refugees. The border patrol isn't trustworthy to me that they will accurately do their job based on the Mexican surge. It brings to mind "You have ONE job!" What credibility have the built for themselves that would make them trustworthy to filter through refugees??

How do we have time to worry about our domestic problems when our government is too worried about bringing other countries problems to us which creates MORE problems? It's like the national debt. We're in debt with our domestic issues and our government is trying to match that debt with foreign issues.

Not to mention, as other people (@ammybelle maybe?) have pointed out, they don't need to be in the country to plan attacks. They don't need to go through the process of being accepted as a refugee to harm us. They can do it right from where they already are, and they're already causing chaos and panic in a country that isn't even the one they attacked. Their goal is to make us betray our values and show our intolerance for other religions and peoples, which will then turn those people against us and bolster their ranks.
Yes. They've been open about wanting France and the US. Letting us know the plan causes the most terror and before Friday we had already let in 2000 refugees. I never said they needed to be in the country to plan attacks. They will go through the process to be accepted. How long were the "pilots" from 9/11 in the US learning to fly? Learning the area? Learning what would cause the most damage?? Learning how are systems work with getting on a plane??

Just throwing it out there that their "plan" if it can be called that is the exact opposite of what you are playing at. Daesh/Isis/Isil/The Federateed Douche Nozzles of Muslimhood want to sew enmity and discord between western nations and innocent Muslim refugees fleeing from places like Syria. If these terrorists can convince western nations that Muslims are too scary to help, it will cause good, honest Muslim people to become even more disenfranchised and frustrated with western nations, raising the likelihood that they get fed up with hypocritical western ideals, driving them into extremists arms. The same nations that claim to be bastions of freedom and opportunity look like racist xenophobes, key words: look like. For countries like the United States to turn their backs on refugees would only make our enemies stronger. Don't play into their hand. On top of all of that, none of the attackers in Paris were even refugees. They were all born in places like Belgium, France, and Brussels. Does this mean we should stop international travel into the USA because it's too risky? I sure hope nobody thinks that would ever be a good decision.
To finish, check out history books in regard to how American's have traditionally viewed refugees. It's nearly universal historically that we haven't wanted to allow refuge inside the USto foreign groups being terrorized because we are in fact traditionally xenophobic, and a bit racist here in the US. I know, shocking! But let's not continue a bad cycle because we are freaked out by boogeymen that don't really exist in the simple ways we think they do.
And an actual UO: I really dislike being pregnant. It sucks a giant bag of dicks at this point. I hear so many women squeeing over how great pregnancy is and it makes me feel so inadequate. I've been on bed rest since Nov. 3rd. bed rest starting in the first trimester? What in the fresh hell did I do to deserve this???(apparently my body allowed an embryo to implant and grow too low/close to my short cervix) I don't feel human, I feel like an incubator. Those feelings make me feel like I am a bad pregnant lady/future mom because I should just be all peachy keen and happy to do whatever I have to do to have a healthy/happy baby. It's not like I'm not doing what my doctor tells me to do, I am! But I still hate it. A lot. I have an ultrasound on Monday at which point I will find out if this pregnancy will be considered high risk or not. Ugh.

This is kind of ridiculous. Sweden is so much safer than any place in the U.S., mostly because they have stricter gun laws. My sister lives and works as a teacher in London (and her husband was commuting that day in 2005) and she's got two kids and we keep begging her to move back to the states so we can see her and them more. She refuses, because she's terrified of school shootings and gun violence.
Stop being afraid of foreign Muslims and start being afraid of the society of systemic hatred, violence and anger we ourselves have created.
