1st Trimester

hcg levels & % increase

Hi everyone! Looking for some advice/insights about hcg levels.

My first blood test was on 11/13 (5 weeks, 5 days) and the hcg was at 3517. Second blood test was 68hrs after the first one and the hcg was at 5694. That's a 40% increase instead of doubling. Needless to say that is worrying me a bit...other than that, I have not been experiencing pregnancy symptoms (other than slight fatigue and waking up in the night) and have had no cramping or spotting. My first ultrasound is a week away.

Anyone else that is going through (or has gone through) a similar situation?

  • What did your doctor say? If they weren't concerned then neither should you be.

Lack of symptoms does not have any bearing on the outcome of your pregnancy.

Once your HCG gets to a certain level it slows down in doubling. Everyone is different. The ranges of what is considered normal are huge.

It's good that you haven't been bleeding and cramping, though that can be normal too.

My doctor said that optimally it should have doubled but to not read too much into it nor panic - so it is not "great" but it is definitely not "bad" either and to wait and see for the ultrasound. Easier said than done though, hence why I am interested in comparable stories :)

Unfortunately the experiences of others wont influence what happens for you and your pregnancy. Just here to say congratulations on your pregnancy and sending positive thoughts your way. Based on what your doctor said it's probably safe to assume that some women in your situation have gone on to have healthy pregnancies and that some others it didn't turn out well. All you can do is keep taking your prenatal vitamins and try your best to keep a level head until your ultrasound. Good luck!

  • I totally understand the concern, we just did our first round of in vitro fertilization and shockingly we are pregnant, I had my first beta and it was 150 and now I'm terrified because my second date I was only 261 Has anyone gone through this, I read on the web that anything above 60% jump is good but my reproductive endocrinologist said they look for 70% then I calculated the number and I'm at 73%? Does anyone have any insight
  • I've done some searching on this. There are quite a few websites that help you calculate the % increase rate while factoring in date/time and showing you where you fall as far as "doubling time".
Those calculators take into account hours for more accuracy. Also, from the reading, anything above 60% is considered good. And 73% is good! Congrats on your IVF first round success and pregnancy! :D

Also, the hours do matter - some people need 48hrs, others 72hrs. And the higher your levels, the more that factors in.

All in all, I hate the waiting (don't do well with uncertainty!) but it is what it is. I'm hoping for the best and waiting for the ultrasound this coming Tuesday.
