June 2016 Moms

When to publicly announce?!

I'm 11w4d along and we just got pictures done so we can announce it officially/have nice holiday cards and memories and the pictures are ready and I wasn't expecting them until Friday! They're already ordered and will be in their way soon.

I am SO excited to "officially" announce it (I've been a martial arts instructor for 8 years at the and dojo and have tons of families and students that I care about!) at work.

I guess my question is, should I announce Friday (12w1d) or I was initially going to wait until Monday (not that big of a difference, I know)? Ahhhh the excitement is killing me!

Really it's up to you when you do it. I announced my previous pregnancies around 9 weeks. But I'm waiting this time. Mostly because baby was not planned and I'm just not ready to share with the world yet.

  • I say whatever feels best for you. I will be 14wks because we're announcing on xmas, normally we would share the news at 12wks.

  • We shared the news with our parents almost right away, we're toying with telling grandparents at almost 10 weeks which ss thanksgiving (and maybe a select aunt or uncle if they're there) and then telling the rest of the family at 14 weeks which is Christmas/New Years. As far as everyone else, we aren't planning on a huge public social media announcement but we'll tell friends when we see them after we've told family. I'm super paranoid that once I say something, something with go wrong so I am waiting as long as possible to tell people.
  • We still haven't told our immediate families yet.  We just aren't ready.  If I were carrying, I honestly wouldn't tell until I had to but that's totally just me.

  • If you're that excited just announce as soon as you have the cards :P what difference will the weekend make?

Side note: I'm curious about your martial arts training while pregnant :) is this your first? I do taekwondo and part of the reason I'm putting off announcing is that I don't want to be coddled or sidelined at the dojang...
  • I'm planning to wait at least until after 12w, when I have my Nuchal translucent scan (to look for chromosomal abnormalities).

    <<<<<<TRIGGER WARNING!!!!!>>>>>>
Last pregnancy we were very unfortunately surprised to find that though the baby was kicking around in there with a great heartbeat, she had severe cystic hygroma (fluid all around her body and some inside her body), which led them to believe it was a chromosomal abnormality.  After a CVS and horrible long weekend we found out our baby had Turner's syndrome which combined with the severe hygroma meant 0% change of survival with so many problems at that early time.

Turner's is a fluke... nothing to do with age, etc.  Just a one-off, bad luck thing, so we're hopeful for this new baby.

    Sorry for the novel....
Needless to say, we are hesitant to make a "public" announcement until we know this baby is healthy, and safe and sound.
Our family knows and our good friends, but it's too painful to talk about with people who aren't close if god forbid something goes wrong this time, so we'll wait.

    1st Pregnancy: EDD 12/31/15; Diagnosed Turner's with terminal cystic hygroma 13wks; induced at 14wks, +3 d+c's.
    2nd Pregnancy: BFP 10/8/15; EDD 6/21/16

  • We told parents at 4+ weeks, we told his sister the day we found out at 4 weeks, my sister got told at 7 weeks, and we went public last night with it at 8+2.
  • We told family at 4 wks when we found out and made it public at 5 wks :) We had lost a baby in February to miscarriage and hadn't told anyone that time because we had waited to reach the second trimester. For us, it was extremely difficult to get through that without support from family and friends. So, we had decided that this pregnancy would be shared from the start :) All that to say, it's completely up to you!! Everyone has reasons for waiting or not waiting...good luck!! :)
  • Really, after about 9 weeks your chance of a MS is very low, though still existent. I'm 10 weeks today and all of my family has known for several weeks because there's no way I would have gone through a MS and not shared it with all of them. But, regarding everyone knowing: distant family, former co-workers, your neighbor, etc. I think it's best to wait until you've heard the heart beat through a Doppler (not just during the ultrasound). Then you know baby's heartbeat is nice and strong and you haven't had a missed MS.

Ultimately it's your baby, your life and your decision. That's just what I would wait for. (You can hear it on a Doppler as early as 9 weeks, sometimes a little later)

@Emztron500 my doctor said to pay attention to my body and not to push it too far. I do Muay Thai kickboxing and Krav Maga. We do lots of knees/kicks to the body (with big pads!) so I'm just very careful about who I partner with since our classes are basically all partner work. I told my boss and coworkers at 6.5 weeks so that they were aware for safety reasons. Certain drills I'll work on a punching bag by myself if I don't feel comfortable. I stopped Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu once I found out and sparring and I'm missing it like crazy but I don't want to take the risk of getting kicked too hard, elbows end up weird places sometimes with BJJ.

My students don't know yet so no one had been coddling me, I've just been hyper aware of my body and smart about partner choices. I'm sure once people know it'll change how they work with me and I'm okay with that, especially once I get bigger!

Oh and yes, I'm a FTM!
  • Our parents, grandparents and close friends all know and knew basically as soon as we find out, within a week or so (making our parents friends, aunts, uncles, cousins also knew lol big mouths). Being a martial arts instructor and continuing training and the close relationship with my boss and coworkers they knew at 6.5 weeks for safety purposes.

I do feel better about announcing before the "proper/normal" 13 weeks now.

I will be doing a public Facebook announcement, especially because I have a "work" Facebook that a lot of my students/parents of students are on.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • We just announced at 10w6d after I had my heartbeat/full check appointment and got the all clear!
  • We will be publicly announcing at 13wks, just because of how some events lined up for us. We'll surprise people in person on the 19th when at 2 different Christmas events, then post a picture announcement on the 20th. It still seems so far away!

  • We're doing it at 13 weeks cause we are announcing to family at thanksgiving so that weekend we are going public. I would have done it at 12 weeks but one week won't hurt.
  • We told parents and a few siblings already. (I have nine brothers and sisters, it's hard to sync up with them all) We have Christmas pictures scheduled for this Wednesday, and plan to make Christmas cards to announce to the rest of family and friends. I think I will probably mail those out around the second week of December. I'll be about 15 weeks then. I'm excited and I feel like this has been a secret FOREVER, but I really wanted to do Christmas cards!

  • I have the NT scan on 11/30 and will announce shortly after that. I did do the Harmony test and I'm waiting on the results. If those come back good I may even consider thanksgiving. I'll be 11.5 weeks!

Oh yeah that sounds a little tough to work around! We don't do a whole lot of partner work, mostly practicing patterns and kicks solo or with bags/paddles, so I think I can get away with just pretending everything's normal for now :) I have testing on Saturday where I'll have to do self-defense and at least one sparring match but with a full chest guard on I think the risk of an unprotected abdominal blow is pretty much non-existent, and I'll only have to do self-defense as a defender and not an attacker so I shouldn't be thrown to the ground or anything. My last pregnancy I kept training until about 25 weeks without issue. Good luck with your announcement! Have fun!

The grandparents already know. If we get a heartbeat on the Doppler next week at my appt, we'll tell our families on Thanksgiving. We will become Facebook official after my NT scan on Dec 7. I'll be 12 weeks 3 days .

  • Oh I couldn't keep it in! We told family, close friends and even co-workers at 10wks :) I will be 12wks tomorrow and am thinking of posting something on social media this weekend. The other day I somehow squeezed in that I was prego to the cashier at the grocery store ! Ha I just want everyone to know!

I love this :) I keep telling total strangers I'm pregnant. Like literally everyone I encounter casually during my day. Takes the pressure off keeping the secret from friends and family!
  • We haven't told anyone yet, mostly because my doctor doesn't want to see us until 12 weeks and that little voice in my head is saying, "Ok, but are you really pregnant?". Two weeks to go!
  • We told our families immediately. I'll be 12 weeks tomorrow and we're going to tell our close friends if we hear a heartbeat at the gyno today. I'll probably publicly announce after my 1st trimester screen at 14 weeks just so I know everything is okay. I don't want to be someone's gossip or 'oh poor thing' story if something goes wrong...
  • We spilled the beans 3 weeks ago with a harry potter reference and a picture on fb. Our families had known for about a week.
  • I just found out today through the genetic testing that we are having a boy. I put this with a small announcement underneath on Facebook. I am 11+5 weeks. Only a couple people knew until today.

We told most family and friends at 5 weeks right after we found out. Basically my husband was too excited to keep his mouth shut! Once we had the ultrasound at 8 weeks and saw the heartbeat, my mom passed the news on to her side of the family.

My daughter was stillborn due to complications of Turners as well. I just wanted to reach out to you because I have been there and its rare to find another person who's gone through the same thing. My heart goes out to you.

  • I really, really want to announce on thanksgiving but my 12 week US/nuchal translucency test is literally that next Monday (the 30th) and I just feel like it's important for me to wait until then. I haven't had a US/seen/heard the baby since my 8 week test so I want to make sure everything is okay before I share the news.
I'm so, so, so nervous all the time. On days where I have no symptoms I just think the worst. Hormones + being in my head are NOT A good combo.
So yeah, even though it would be convenient to announce at 11w5d with my extended family in one place. I'm going to wait with fingers crossed.
  • @aloha5736 what is a harmony test?
  • This idiot I hardly know got wind that I was pregnant at like 5w and told tons of people we know and I'm really angry about it. Maybe that's why I'm not sure I'm ready to "come out" to Facebook (we have a lot of far away friends) -- like maybe I'm feeling possessive of my special news being stolen. Idk. That and I haven't heard a heartbeat yet or seen a sono. I have OB appt #2 on Tuesday (10w3d)
