Flu shot?

I'm going to call my OB and check for sure, but does anyone know if we can get the flu shot in the first trimester? I know you can in the 3rd... but I was sure not about the first.

Re: Flu shot?

  • I was looking on the website of the provincial government where I live and it recommends the flu shot "at any time, during any trimester." I'm going to ask about it when I see my doctor later this week.
  • Loading the player...
  • Thanks! Good to know!

  • Before I stopped working as a nurse to be a housewife I know the hospital I worked in vaccinated pregnant women. We were required to ask any women of reproductive age if they were pregnant and if they were we had to make sure they got the thimerosal-free vaccine.

  • I got mine last Thursday. You have to get the shot, no mist. I strongly encourage getting it. All you can take if you do get the flu is Tylenol. The biggest concern in early pregnancy with the flu is having a fever, which can effect babies development. I had flu like symptoms last week (turns out it wasn't the flu) but I was damn miserable. Call your doctor if you're unsure, but I would recommend getting it ASAP. As soon as I felt better, I went and got mine.
  • The WHO and CDC both reconmend the Flu to all pregnant women, even in the first trimester.  Just don't get the 'live' virus, which is found in the nasal sprays.
    Thank God for Raid.

I got mine last Monday. Be sure to let them know you are pregnant because there are different versions of the flu shot. My provider wanted me to get the no latex no egg version.
  • Already got mine... Found out I was pregnant a few days later. Also found out I had an allergic rxn to the shot and I cannot get it again :(

Like pp said just don't get the nasal one with live virus and you should be fine!
  • I'm usually all about it. ASAP, any trimester, all that jazz. But I had a loss this year and everything is making me so paranoid. I think I'm waiting until my 12w appt, so around Christmas. But maybe not. I don't know. Gah.
  • It's safe to get at any point during pregnancy, just let your nurse/pharmacist know. They give pregnant women one with less preservatives (although in all likelihood the regular flu shot is just fine, they ethically cannot do studies on pregnant women to confirm this. *Theoretically* there is a risk, despite not having documented proof of the risk, so they use the version with less preservatives which is proven to be safe). The risk of what could happen if you get the flu while pregnant is much, much higher than the *theoretical* risk of harm from an inactivated vaccine :)

Plus, small bonus, by getting the flu shot during pregnancy you pass on some of the immunity to your baby, who can't get a flu shot until I believe 6 months of age if I'm remembering correctly. Having summer babies that may not seem like an important benefit, but keep in mind our babies will be 6 months old in January so will begin the flu season with no protection besides what we give them.
  • Yeah, they even say it is very important that you do, because if you get a fever it can be dangerous to the baby. I got mine. Let them know you are pregnant and they will give you the preservative free version.
  • I'm glad to see this post TattooedMommy. Im glad it wasn't the flu and that you're doing better.
  • Anytime is safe! My doctor said us pregnant people should be the FIRST to get our flu shots!
