Swelling question:

So at night my arms, hands, and fingers get so numb! I know that's all normal being almost 2 weeks from due date.. but is it normal to feel like there's a huge rubber band around my shoulder/armpit making my arms feel weird throughout the day too? (That's the only way I know how to describe it)

Re: Swelling question:

  • Honestly I'd just quickly give your doctor a call. I personally don't really know what you're describing but I imagine a doctor would tell you whether or not there's a problem. Hopefully some other ladies have some experience with what you are dealing with in the meantime.

  • My arms and legs go numb quite often (pre pregnancy) and that's just because I have a terrible back. I haven't noticed an increase or decrease though. Maybe babys position is causing this symptom for you. Idk. Call your doctor just to be safe!
  • I too think you should give your doctor a call. I haven't experienced this (yet) but doesn't sound like it would be normal to feel that much pressure from swelling. Hoping everything is fine, let us know what your doctor says!

  • I am going through this same thing, except it's mainly just my right arm. I wake up several times a night because it's numb, and it has been going on for 2-3 weeks. I asked my doctor about it at my last appointment and he said carpal tunnel is a normal pregnancy symptom, and it should subside a few weeks after delivery. I started wearing a wrist brace at night and it has helped tremendously.
  • It sounds a lot like what I had a few months ago. I was alarmed; but apparently its quite typical. I would check though with a doc.

Do you text/use your phone lying down in bed a lot before bed? I stopped and that helped a lot.

They note that even though it's both whole arm and one leg for me it's worse from the elbow down and pinky/ring finger, and its also due to doing ultrasound work (a pinch grip and tight shoulder) and I've had to be super careful to rest it and lift light weights/stretch.

I'm leaving a little early from work though before baby so I don't tempt injury.
  • Def call the doctor. Could be a sign if preclampsia
  • No idea but I hope you feel better! Did you end up calling?

Definitely tell Doctor, but also cut down on sodium!!! I did this; mandated by my Dr. because of severe swelling and sudden blood pressure issues that developed out of nowhere, and it turns out I was retaining a TON of fluids; in two weeks prior to my due date (which is tomorrow), I've lost 18 pounds, and I'm not even swollen at all anymore. I even had "carpel tunnel" going on...and since I dramatically reduced my sodium, it had completely disappeared!!!

Same here. Had it to some degree with all 3 previous pregnancies. But if you see visible swelling in your hands and arms then that's not normal. The wrist braces for carpal tunnel are amazing. Not very flattering though.
  • Thanks ladies, I haven't called... I go to the doctor tomorrow I have been watching my BP it's been higher than my normal but not considered "high" so I'll just discuss with them Monday. Last night I had a scare at work my feet and ankles were literally 3x the size and I felt off all day... My face stayed flushed and hot to the touch.. My BP was way high for my normal range but my mom said it wasn't high enough for them to admit me so I'm not sure... Rushed home ate cereal propped my feet up and crashed I feel better today, I'll see as the day goes on at work. If this happens again this evening I'm definitely going into triage.
  • @kleshelle you should call your dr. Preeclampsia is a slippery slope if that's what's going on. Better safe than sorry
  • Thinking of you a lot today. hope all is well- good luck at your appointment
  • I have had numbness in my fingers for about a month now. It happens mainly at night, but now it is throughout the day. My feet are also extremely swollen, and my blood pressure is rising the last couple weeks. Luckily I have no protein in my urine! My Dr has put me on salt restriction, part time bed rest, and has told me she will try to keep the baby in until 37 weeks! I will be 36 weeks on Thursday! I guess we just have to keep our feet up, stay away from salt, put on those compression socks, and stay calm;)

Way high for you (or a drastic change from your baseline) is a serious concern re: pre eclampsia regardless of whether your mom felt like it was "high enough to admit you" or not. Also, feeling off and severe, sudden swelling are signs of this as well. These are all "Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200" signs to head to L&D triage to have your BP monitored and possible lab work done. Trust me when I say that you'd rather a false alarm at triage then a seizure. I don't mean to lecture but this is a serious thing. I would recommend calling your nurse triage ASAP.

I hope all is cleared and you're told things are ok. Please keep us posted.
This is very true. I'm dealing with pregnancy induced hypertension with a high risk of pre-e that started off as a change in my baseline blood pressure before slowly moving upwards towards admitting range.
Doctors want to know about any change in bp even if it's not yet in the danger zone because pre-e and hypertension can happen suddenly and cause serious complications.
Keep an eye out for facial swelling, vision changes and pitting edema- those are signs you need to head to L&D asap.
  • My OB wasn't concerned about it... He said it sounds like normal symptoms since I'm getting so close to having her. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it and keep watching my sodium, this is my last week at work so I'll just keep my feet up as much as possible and watch my sodium.
  • Just keep an eye on it. I get in on occasion but I've had issues with carpal tunnel to begin with. If you feel you're bp is high, don't hesitate to call them.
