Stopping BF after 1 week

So.. Lo was in nicu for the first week and was getting formula supplements. I tried to do BF but it's just not for us. Anyways.. My supply never really came in very well. I was pumping 1-1.5 oz every feeding.(she never really latched. )

So I've been attempting to pump and BF for 1 wk with low supply. I'm wondering how to stop? I tried googling it. It's all for mom's who've done it for a long time with good supply.

I am currently pumping 2x a day (usually once I feel full I pump) 15 min getting 2oz. But how do I continue to stop? How do you know when is the next time to wean? Baby is completely on bottles so I cant just wean a feeding. How do you wean and then just know when to completely stop?
Any mom's out there have experience with short term BF and quitting??

Re: Stopping BF after 1 week

  • I quit after 1 week too. My baby girl was also in the NICU and I had a difficult time recovering from my c section. So having to supplement after each nursing session and then pump for the next was getting to be too much. I had a decent supply but I hated pumping and breastfeeding was a struggle. I didn't know how to go about quitting either. When I looked it up, it said to wean slowly off pumping. But all my friends who switched to formula said they just stopped cold turkey. So that's what I did and it worked out fine. I mixed what breast milk I had left with the formula for the first day and then just gave her formula. As for my supply, I just stopped pumping. They were sore for a few days and I put a warm cloth on them or hand expressed a bit for relief while in the shower. But otherwise I just waited it out and now I'm dried up. It was simple. I didn't have any problems and I had a decent amount of milk in there. It's probably better to wean slowly but I hated pumping and couldn't stand the thought of doing it anymore. And I didn't want to encourage my supply to increase.

  • Yeah that's what I worry about is increasing my supply or just prolonging it. Maybe I'll try it cold turkey. I hate pumping as well.
  • And you are only pumping twice a day. I think most of the articles on weaning are assuming you are more established and would be pumping more often. That's what I told myself. And I was pumping 3-5 times a day and I was fine just stopping. So imagine you would be if you're only pumping twice.
  • Yeah, I would just stop if I were you. I was pumping 12x a day... Then down to 8x... Then 6x... Now attempting to go down to 4x per day.
  • I quit all at once. When I realized I pumped for 45 minutes and got less than a quarter of an ounce and had a newborn who would nurse for 4 hours and still be wailing out of hunger... I had my husband run out for formula and that was it. Be prepared to be painfully engorged for a couple days. Ice packs and a sports bra help a lot. Hand express if you can just to alleviate some pressure to get you through. Good luck!
  • Same boat as you. Just quit and only pump if you're in a lot of pain and just enough for relief. Use cabbage for pain relief.
