3rd Trimester

Chronic yeast infections

33+ weeks & since getting pregnant, I have had an out of control Y.I.
I've tried prescription creams, otc meds, and even Diflucan and nothing is helping. My crotch is so swollen/sore that it hurts to have my legs together at all! My OB has given me tips to lessen the y.i. but nothing has helped and I'm afraid he or my nurse will be irritated if I keep bringing it up at every appointment.
My skin is so sensitive that I can't even use vagisil to help with the itching because it causes more swelling!
Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm going crazy

Re: Chronic yeast infections

  • With the pain it might not be happening but has your DH/partner been treated for yeast? Many men don't show any symptoms but can pass it back to you.

Other things to consider is making sure you are wearing cotton only underwear that isn't too tight. I've been fighting yeast on and off since I peed on the stick and changing my underwear a few times a day when it flares up. I also will put on a long cotton skirt and go commando in the evenings to help air the area out.

Ask your OB but I also use Apple cider vinegar as a rinse (it does burn but works well for me) and others use about a cup in a bathtub to help soothe the area.

Oh and with the underwear wash them on hot water-this will help kill the infection.

I will sometimes take a cotton wash cloth and damp it with cold water an sit with it between my legs for a few minutes (I then make sure to try myself off very well and generally do this during my commando nights) to help the swelling.

I was unaware vagsil was for yeast-I'm a less is best for the private areas-as the more things down there can cause more irritation/reactions. I have a monostat cream that I will use if it goes beyond a small itch. If you are using too many items down there it can also cause irritation.

Oh and check your laundry detergent. If it is heavily scented it could also be contributing to the irritation. I use fragrance free products only with no dryer sheets or fabric softener but DH and I both have very sensitive skin.

  • Everything PP said. Along with the laundry detergent thing, I've always had to use Dreft for my underwear because of how sensitive my skin is.

It wasn't until I got pregnant and my Midwife prescribed me a cream that mine cleared up. I dealt with them for a good four years and some how I haven't had anymore since being pregnant. She also told me to not sleep with underwear on so the area can breathe. I think that helped me a lot because then instead of sleeping in underwear wet from discharge, it was all dry down there. Hope you find relief soon!!!

  • Another idea -in case you haven't tried it - is to for your final few weeks of pregnancy try to find an unscented soap to use. I'm sorry if you've tried this already and it didn't work. It sounds miserable :(

Don't feel bad for keep bringing it up at appointments. It's their job to try and figure out what's causing it - you're uncomfortable to say the least and they should want to help you find relief!
  • Don't feel bad. Bring it up. It's uncomfortable and an ongoing infection isn't good for you or the baby. PPs had great suggestions. I'm so sorry. I've had one so far and think I have another they royally suck.

  • Ok, as gross as this sounds and it's as natural and hippy as I can get using yogurt down there helps also! It cools it down and helps with the bacteria. Go commando as much as you can too.
  • Ask your doctor if he can recommend an over the counter probiotic vitamin to take? It helps keep the yeast and bacteria living in harmony. I'm in the same boat. 25 weeks pregnant and have had 7, yes 7, yeast infections so far! And 3 utis! I think some of our bodies are just more susceptible to getting them. It's miserable, I know :/ but seriously look into those probiotics!

  • Eat yoghurt. It will take a few days but it will help. They say putting it on the troubled area helps too but never did for me. But eating the youghurt did, you need to read the label to make sure it had caltures in it
  • I would highly recommend against putting yogurt down there. I tried this once and it made the infection a million times worse and my doctor later told me it was not an effective solution and my reaction was not unusual. (Yes I did use plain yogurt also). As PP suggested, I would request they look at it under a microscope to confirm it is indeed a yeast infection.

  • Lots of great advice. I'd also add ironing your cotton underwear where your lady parts touch can be effective.
  • eat a pineapple, you can eat it over two days, it works every time for me, stay away from meat and wheat(do more fruits and veges)
  • I've had recurrent yeast infection too. And i hate it. It is very uncomfortable. I had neopenotran, canesten suppositories.. They will clear it for some days then it will come back. why do they come back? Right now I'm having it again and the doctor prescribed flagystatin for me. :disappointed:
