Coffee drinkers ?

Hello mommies !
So we all have been up in the middle of the night - having restless nights and working on little reserve at times! I know we are all survival mode. Just curious how much coffee everybody is drinking ?
I'm pumping and giving 50/50 with formula supplementing but drink about 2 cups a day. I feel like it gives me renewed energy and the boost that I need to get through the day. My baby is 6 weeks and incredibly fussy/gassy/colicky :(. I spend most of the day just holding her and rocking her and walking with her. It's also calming and soothing cuz I LOVE coffee hehe.
Just wondering with the BM how much is too much and how to balance what I need versus what I shouldn't be drinking ....

Re: Coffee drinkers ?

  • They say a small cup,but no issues here with bf so sometimes I have two :)

  • Im not a coffee drinker, but would maybe recommend drinking it right after you feed. Maybe you already do. I've read coffee can cause reflux and tummy issues with babies aside from dosing them with caffeine. I like a soda now and again so I either stick to caffeine free or drink it right after a feeding if I need a boost.
  • I drink a cup in the morning and that's about it. I try to stay away from caffeine from 5 on
  • Caffeine builds up in baby's system, staying there for days, making her irritable. Most information I've read says 1 (6 oz) cup a day is fine, but we do half caff.
  • I drank coffee my entire pregnancy and haven't stopped since she was born. There is a good Kelly Mom article about caffeine and breastfeeding: https://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/lifestyle/caffeine/

I haven't noticed an issue with my LO. I don't drink an exorbitant amount of coffee either.
  • I drink 1 cup in the morning and sometimes I will get a 1/2 caf drink from Starbucks in the afternoon if I need a pick me up. I also pump and do formula, and I try to have my coffee right after I pump, then wait at least 4 hours before I pump again.
  • Under 200 mgs -- just like when you are pregnant.  Which is like 1 cup of strong coffee or 2 cups of light coffee.  Some babies are more sensitive than others, if your baby is very fussy maybe try to cut it out and see if she calms down a bit.  Or try tea, which has less caffeine.

  • My LC said 2 servings per day is fine. I generally have 1 small cup in the morning because I snack on dark chocolate throughout the day which is another serving.

  • I can't drink any caffeine, it makes her irritable and fussy! I can't have even a little bit..the time I need it most..sigh
