Thoughts on gender?

I went at 15 weeks and 3 days for a gender ultrasound which I know I saw horror stories of 15 week ultrasounds being wrong. I was told it was a boy from this photo and that was the best she could show us of the "turtle". My next ultrasound will be with my doctors office in 3 weeks which I will be 19 weeks so we should be able to confirm then. Does anyone believe it could be a mistake and possibly a girl or definitely looks like a boy. Has an early "turtle theory" been wrong for anyone? Just curious now what this precious baby is but definitely ready for my 19 week ultrasound.

Please lurk more and you will see these do not go over well here.

Most of us here feel that:
- it's sex and not gender
- getting an early scan to try and find out the sex is never a good thing and is a waste of money
- guessing the sex of an internet stranger's child isn't fun, entertaining or interesting
- seeing someone's unborn child's genitalia posted for strangers to see is weird
- the anatomy scan you have scheduled at 19 weeks is NOT about finding out the sex, it is about making sure your baby is healthy

I know it's an exciting time for you and you can get a lot of great advice and wisdom from this site. So please, lurk some more, see the community flow and continue to participate.

If it was at a boutique place that specializes in sex scans, chances are that it is pretty darn accurate. Scientific studies have shown high accuracy at 14+ weeks (I'm going tomorrow at 14 weeks 2 days for a sex scan at such a place)

Why are u calling it a turtle? Penis, vagina.... These are perfectly acceptable words for adults like us to use.

If you have issues over genitals in ultrasound pictures you shouldn't be on baby post anyways. There is such a thing as asking advice from other mothers. Also 19 weeks ultrasound is actually the gender ultrasound. Actually technicians refer to genders as turtles and hamburgers because how it looks. Not my terminology, medical terminology now.

In sex ultrasounds, they look for turtle/hamburger shape for boy/girl genitals.

OP, for what it's worth, I'm so anxious that my early US tomorrow will be wrong. I got talked into it, and now everyone's so excited... but I'm terrified of getting attached to a boy/girl and finding out at the next US that it was wrong. -.- I wish I could back out or at least push it to 16 weeks, but it's too late now.

Anyways, based on my internet research only (I'm not a tech...I'm not qualified whatsoever), I would believe that your tech who said boy was correct.

It's a pretty effed up thing for you to say an ultrasound "horror story" is one where the sex was incorrectly identified. It's actually very insensitive and offensive to people who genuinely have had devastating news at their ultrasounds.

This has got to be MUD. No one accused you of saying your baby would be a horror story. YOU said "I saw horror stories of fifteen week ultrasounds being wrong"

"Turtle theory" is a new one haha. If I were you I'd be excited to hear with more certainty at 19 weeks, but sounds like it's probably a boy. Just keep an open mind and enjoy the anticipation!

I can't speak for everyone here but I personally got "horror story" from where you said "I saw horror stories"

Yes that's what they refer to their stories as? I didn't say mine would be, you can clearly tell from my post that I genuinely want to know honestly because I'm ready to start buying and spoiling my baby. So sorry you feel that's wrong! I don't know what you expected based on your poor wording and your hopes that the good internet ladies of the bump had more knowledge than who ever you paid to do your US.

No one is stopping you from buying things for your child but yourself. Tech said boy I'd say cool it's a boy and move on. If you don't trust what they say maybe you should look into some different prenatal care. Good luck

Actually 19-20 weeks ultrasound isn't the "gender" ultrasound. It's so that they (the doctor) can get measurements, check baby, check mother, make sure everything is going good. Finding out the sex is a perk. That's not the purpose of the ultrasound.
ETA- if my doctor used the "medical terminology" of "turtle/hamburger" theory I'd be looking for a new one.

I think in all sincerity, it's a little ridiculous to pay a professional to tell you the sex of your baby, then go to strangers for confirmation.
It doesn't make you an 'idiot', or a bad person, it's just a little silly.
Also, nothing in life is guaranteed.
The first and most important thing right now should be a healthy baby, and whichever sex your child happens to be at birth is a blessing.
We should be so thankful that modern technology allows us the opportunity to even potentially determine the sex of our unborn children. That technology wasn't always around, so it's really more of a luxury/benefit than a right.

I have 2 boys and am currently carrying a girl and none of my gender determination shots were from this angle. I would have my doubts based solely on this picture. But if the tech saw multiple angles she is probably right.

Actually, if you are posting pictures of your unborn's genitals on the Internet, you shouldn't be posting. Would you post a picture of your vagina on the Internet? No? So why is it different for your baby?

I've heard horror stories of 15 week ultrasounds revealing no life. That is awful. This, not so much.

Wait a few weeks to decorate your nursery and practice some patience.

My OB says penis and vagina. The ultrasound technician at the 3D boutique we went to at 17 weeks said penis, not turtle. I wouldn't trust someone who claimed to be professional then called my sons penis a turtle. Also, she does cervical checks through my vagina. I would be super creeped out if she said something like "you're going to feel my fingers on and in your hamburger". Haha!

Ditto to everything PP said but it irritated me enough to reiterate it so here we go.

1. 18-20 week ultrasound is the anatomy scan. That is the medical term. Major organ systems develop by 20 weeks, the scan tells the doctor that the intestines moved from the umbilical cord to the stomach, that the spinal cord isn't outside of the spine, that the arms and legs are all in the right place etc. If baby cooperates, you may be able to make a strong guess at sex. Please do not perpetuate the belief that the sole point is to determine how your baby will pee.

2. Turtles/hamburgers are not official medical terms. Penis, scrotum, vagina and labia are normal words to hear at an ultrasound. I would laugh my way out the door if my tech called my baby's parts "turtle" or "hamburger".

3. Posting images of the genitals of children, if not in the womb, is considered child pornography. Please refrain from posting images of your child's genitals, whether they are inside or outside of your uterus.

4. Paying someone to determine the sex of your child is silly. Doubting their assessment and posting a profile shot (which is one of the worst angles to determine sex BTW) for internet strangers to confirm is even sillier.

19-20 week ultrasound is ACTUALLY not for gender. It's the anatomy scan. overall anatomy....
