C-section incision draining

Hey mamas -

Anyone have a c section and have it start draining fluid after it was "healed?"
Mine started draining the day after I was cleared at my 6 week post-op
They opened the hole up more to allow it to drain faster, but now there are two new holes next to it.
Just wondering if anyone else has had an experience similar to mine and how long your healing process took.
And really I just need some positive vibes - this has really set my postpartum back leaps and bounds..

Xoxo-

Re: C-section incision draining

  • I had this with my first C-section. It was leaking from a pin hole and the area around it was red. Unfortunately, I was numbed up in the area and my OB had to cut under the surface to let the infection pocket out. It then had to be cleaned a couple times a day and my husband had to put a dressing in it so it would heal from the inside out. It took a couple months for it to fully close up. It was irritating and made me uncomfortable and definitely made me hesitant and over cautious with my repeat C-section. It's nothing you did, this is actually really common and a risk of a C-section. I would call your OB since other areas near it are now draining just to be safe. Good luck, sorry I didn't have the most encouraging story :(

  • I got an infection in mine 2 weeks pp. Luckily it was already draining so they didn't need to reopen in the incision. I'm now 8 weeks pp and it's still draining a bit. Also have about a pea sized hole. My Midwife told me to keep it dry and covered so that's what I've been doing. I feel like it's never going to heal!
  • At my one week checkup, when my doctor removed the steri strips, there was one area at the edge of the incision where the skin hadn't closed yet. My doctor wasn't concerned and didn't suspect an infection. She replaced the strip strips to that area and one week later I took them off at home as instructed. There was a tiny bit of fluid that drained when I removed them at home so it still hadn't healed at that point. My doctor still wasn't concerned and eventually the area looked like it scabbed over. Fast forward to today (7weeks pp) I noticed one small area towards the edge that didn't look right. I poked it lightly and it bled a tiny bit! I called my doctor and spoke to the nurse who assured me it wasn't concerning as long as it didn't look infected. It's not red around the edges and there doesn't appear to be any drainage other than a few specs of blood. She said it's not uncommon for this sort of thing to happen. I go next week for my 6 week check up (a little late I know) and I'm anxious to have it looked at.
  • My doctor told me I was allergic to the internal stitches. So he put like a q tip type thing with antibiotics all in the oozy spots and it was much better in a weeks time. About 2 weeks later I have a pretty ugly incision but at least it's closed up finally
