They apparently named him after Charles Spurgeon, a pastor. But, my question is, what was so wrong with Charles?! That would be a much more reasonable first name name.
To be honest I feel it's all for the attention. This daughter and the other married one shooting for the spin off series and let's face it it's got people talking. The suspense building up to it with waiting to pick/announce. The announce a totally WTF "name". All extending the spotlight they are getting.
I would have like the name Elliot as the first name. And I truly do not know where the nn is coming from? I agree that it's all for attention. But they are properly thinking that their son will be working with a church in some way and it will be a respected name. But to the rest of the world the name is just crazy. I had real hope for her but I guess I was wrong. I'm just surprised the Jill is not pregnant already.

I think it's just another example of them being holier than thou. I'm going to name my son after a pastor from the 1800s that none of you have ever even heard of. Look at how Christian I am!
I don't know for certain where the nickname Quincy came from, but I saw a comment somewhere else that Quincy was the nickname they gave the baby in utero because Jessa's husband joked they should have a Q name theme for their kids. As far as I know, it's completely unrelated to the actual name.
I've heard of people naming their child Haddon in honor of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Actually using Spurgeon for a first name seems a bit far, but I like it better than Bear Blaze Rocknroll. At least little Spurgeon has the option of going by his more normal middle name if he wants to.
It's dumb, but I don't find it all that surprising. They think it's clever... it's not. This kid's uncle molested his mom, so there are far bigger issues in the family. Might as well throw a ridiculous name at the kid.
I really don't have an opinion of them one way or the other. Don't have any interest in following them but I actually liked that the older one named her son Israel. It grew on me. So I was curious what this one would do. But Spurgeon? Why on earth would anyone think that's a nice thing to do to an innocent child? The only NN I can see from that is Spurge, which may even be worse than his given name. That poor baby.

I look forward to his eventual sex related scandal where everyone begins to call him "splooge".
Atrocious name but at least he'll be homeschooled and only surrounded by others who are super religious and have a chance of thinking its cool.
Also, PP was right, Jessa nicknamed the baby Quincy before they knew the sex. Once he was born, people kept calling him Quincy.
Elliot would be a fine first name but they presumably want an army of children like her parents and need a letter with lots of options. More S options than E options, so Spurgeon it is. I agree, all I think of is sturgeon, like the fish.
I think of surgeon.... With an extra "p". I'm all for honoring whomever, but that one could have been middle named if they HAD to use it. I don't really get it.

This was my thinking. I'm all for naming your kid after people you admire, and I understand their position and admiration for Charles Spurgeon, but... Why use his surname instead of his first name? Charles is a perfectly fine name....
