Re: Thanksgiving GTKY
1.What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
- Going to my aunts to be with mom's side of the family. Usually around 30 people! Then on Saturday we'll celebrate with my dad's side. DH's family scatters around the country for Thanksgiving so we don't see them.
2. What's your favorite food?
- Forget the turkey, I'm all about the sides! Mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cranberries, rolls, etc. Yuuummm!
3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping? If so, will you go on Thanksgiving or only black Friday? What's your favorite stores?
- I always choose to work. I'm not into crowds and it's a good, quiet catch up day at the office.
4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory?
- When all of my cousins and I were little we'd all spend Thanksgiving night with my aunt who hosts. We would stay up late, play video games, then play the whole next day while our moms shopped. It was my favorite holiday growing up because they made it a really special two day celebration.
5. Anything else you'd like to add? Got a favorite food recipe?
- One holiday tradition my mom had my siblings and I do that I intend to carry on is making Thanksgiving Lists. Before we were allowed to discuss or make our Christmas lists, we each had to write our list of all we're thankful for and hang it on the fridge. We all loved doing this - and enjoyed it more and more as we got older. This year, LO is grateful for: Milk, her favorite toys to chew on, her great daycare teachers, and her mommy and daddy (I hope!!).
2. Mac and cheese
3. Shopping, probably Friday morning
4. Looking at the sale papers with my mama, sister, and aunts
5. Pecan pie
2. I'm with @swaugh14 skip the turkey and give me the sides. Especially stuffing and gravy.
3. Hell no! There will be no shopping on thanksgiving or Friday.
4. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because everyone is laid back, no gifts, and tons of food. That's just my favorite memory. Food, family, drinks, dancing. It's always been a big party.
5. Favorite recipe. My aunts cozy. It's basically a chocolate pudding pie with whipped cream and nuts. But cranberry sauce in the can with the ridges is a close second
2. Carrot casserole and sweet potatoes!
3. All the girls in my family and on DH side get together and shop. We never try to stand in line for the big items. It's more of a day for us all to hang out and get lunch.
4. Proably last year when we announced we were expecting twins!
5. Oh thanksgiving last year was awesome because we announced we were expecting twins but I still had really bad nausea and couldn't eat all the great food! I'm excited for it this year. It's on! Haha.
2. The paleo person in me wants to say turkey but I eventually give in to the corn casserole and once I do I can't stop
3. Online shopping only
4. There's a great pic of me and a fav cousin at my grandmas when we were little. He died shortly after and I'm glad the moment was captured.
5. Wisconsin cranberries and fresh orange juice. 2nd year in a row I've forgotten to order the cranberries in time. Too preoccupied with baby stuff!!
2. My aunt's homegrown squash casserole...it's so good! Fortunately my sister makes it really well since my aunt won't be there.
3. I worked retail Black Friday several years ago and have only shopped once in my life..that's enough to hold me over for a few more year haha..
4. Around thanksgiving is when we always put up or Christmas tree so that was always fun to do with my mom and sister..I guess that's not really thanksgiving but I don't have one that stands out to me..
5. I'll just add that I love the tradition that @swaugh14 said she did when she was a kid..we might have to steal that as Addy grows up, that's a neat idea!
2nd round exp 8/20/18.
2.) Also all about the sides green beans stuffing rolls and potatoes!! My mouth is watering as I think about it.
3.) When I was younger my mom and I would go shopping on black Friday go through all the ads and everything. I'm very much against shopping on thanksgiving itself since I worked retail and could never go home for thanksgiving I'm not a fan of stores that do it. This year on friday I just want to spent time with the fam and hanging out with lo!
4. Fav memory, my whole family would come together for thanksgiving when I was younger it's also on my birthday. My favorite memory is probably sitting around with them, my grandmother loved it and I remember her happiness the most sure do miss that lady.
5. I also love the idea of the thankful list! My mom likes our Christmas list in July she's very in to christmas. I do want to get a little onesie that say 'I'm what my family is thankful for' because I'm so happy lo is here to celebrate with us. Also excited to not be super nauseous and EAT ALL THE FOOD!!!
2. I love the sides! Mashed potatoes, GB casserole, and the pie.
3. I've never been Black Friday shopping and will never go. I'll stick with Cyber Monday though!
4. Favorite memory is playing games with my family every Thanksgiving after dinner while drinking wine and eating pie. It was always really fun. I have a big family and they all have great senses of humor. I really miss spending Thanksgiving with them. DH and ILs don't like playing games. I am happy to be feeling better this year though!
5. I also love the idea of thankful lists with LO!
2. What's your favorite food? I cannot name just one. I heart food.
3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping? If so, will you go on Thanksgiving or only black Friday? What's your favorite stores? I'd rather die a million deaths than go to a retail establishment Thanksgiving weekend. I may online shop of I have time and know what I'm looking for.
4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory? Grammie always drying out the turkey while my aunt silently made like 5 gallons of gravy to combat it, without her noticing.
5. Anything else you'd like to add? Got a favorite food recipe? I make the best apple pie ever...instead of a pie crust on top I do a cinnamon and brown sugar strudel topping. Any excuse I have to make it I do. This year I have mini pie pans and a small crowd so I'm going to make individual pies.
2. We always have a really nice cheese tray so the wine and cheese is almost better than the meal.
3. Nope. I hate shopping and I hate crowds, so black Friday shopping sounds like hell to me. Hello Amazon!
4. The older I get the more I realize I don't have many warm memories from being a kid. Probably last year when I was putting up the tree and DH and DS got out his train set for the first time. The day after Thanksgiving is going to be for Christmas decorations, movies, and hanging out at home. I also love the Thanksgiving list!
1. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
We have a friend from SoCal coming to visit us with his son (a senior in hs) and the son's cousin (same age as the son). The local NFL team is playing at home, and it happens to be my friends team (those of us from LA don't have a home team, so we're free to choose allegiance). My friend bought tickets for himself and the boys, but we (DH, LO and I) aren't going to the game. We are, however, going to go and tailgate before the game and then will relocate to a local bar near the stadium to watch the game.
2. What's your favorite food?
Mashed potatoes and gravy. Noms noms noms. And pumpkin pie (made by DH with actual pumpkins we purchase specifically for that purpose)
3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping? If so, will you go on Thanksgiving or only black Friday? What's your favorite stores?
No. No shopping on Thanksgiving or black Friday. If it wasn't for the fact my friend was coming and going to that game, we would avoid the restaurant/bar, too. I'm with @KonaCoffeeBean - it annoys me that people feel like they need to shop on a day that has been traditionally set aside for family. Retail and service workers (bartenders / wait staff / cooks) deserve a day off they can count on, damnit. You can be damned sure that our bartender or wait staff wherever we are that Thursday will be getting a substantial tip.
4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory?
Its not a *favorite* memory, by any means, but its a good story, and y'all will probably get a good kick out of it, so I'll share it. When I was in the 8th grade and just starting to grow away from 'kid stuff' and into 'cool stuff', I had a very memorable Thanksgiving. I was at that transitionary phase where around kids my age I was trying to be all cool, but when away from the eyes of my peers would still play with my sister who was 5 years younger than me - running around with a 7 year old and playing at forts or hide n seek, etc.
So anyway, we were off playing outside and roaming the nearby streets by my moms house (my parents are divorced, and my mom always had Thanksgiving holiday) while she worked on the food. Since I was away from my friends and nobody knew me there (my mom lived 2 hours away from my dad), I didn't have to pretend to be cool, so my sister and I were climbing trees. Well, I shimmied up this tree easily enough, it was growing at an angle out of a hill, so you could almost walk along the trunk. Well, I decided to get down by hanging from a branch and dropping to the ground. It was only a foot or so between my feet and the ground. Not far to drop at all. Well, my feet hit the sloped ground, the grass was wet, and my shoes slipped out from under me. I fell face forward, flat and straight (imagine a domino falling over), and put my hands out in front me. I had the wind knocked out of me, and falling HURT. Bad. I started crying and told my sister to go get my mom while I just laid there bellydown, bawling into the wet grass. My mom comes, she gets me up, gets me back to the house and is checking me out for bumps to my head, abrasions, having me move my neck around, etc. And my wrists start to swell. By the time we're done making sure I didn't break my head, my whole arms from my elbows down are visibly swollen and are starting to throb.
Go to the ER - I have just broken BOTH of my arms just above the wrists. One is knocked out of alignment and needs to be set, so I get a shot that supposedly may 'burn just a little bit, maybe sting' but actually feels like CAUSTIC GREEN ACID HEATED TO LAVA TEMPERATURES AND PUSHED OUT OF A NUCLEAR SYRINGE to numb the area so they can set the bones. Then a nurse grabs my elbow and the Dr grabs my hand and they pull in opposite directions, and it doesn't hurt as much the shot drawn up by Satan himself, but on the heels of that immensely painful injection, its just too much. I ended up (not purposefully) kicking the dr as he was setting the bones by pulling.
Then I got put in the old school plaster casts because the newer lighter stuff was just coming out at that point, and the hospital hadn't gotten any yet. My right arm was in a cast from my my palm to just below my elbow. My left was from above my elbow, held my elbow bent at 90 degrees, came down to wrist, held that at 90 degree, and covered my palm. So my arm was basically bent and held into a Π shape.
Then we went back to the house and my mom fed me Thanksgiving dinner like a baby while my stepdad drank and brooded that dinner was 2 hours late because we were in the ER and now my mom wasn't paying attention to his 'witty' banter because she was busy putting forkfuls of food in my mouth. Insert a sarcastic 2 thumbs up smiley here.
As a bonus - I got to go back to Jr high, where all the boys I had been crushing on and who had no idea who I was finally noticed me because I was the girl who had two big bulky ugly casts on her arms suddenly. Not the cool casts that are light and could be colors. No. The marshmallow sized casts that weigh 5 pounds each. (Tho I did end up getting the newer casts a few days later during a visit to an ortho doc. My left arm had to stay in that position, tho)
As an *extra added* bonus - for the next 5 weeks I got to endure the added humiliation of having my pre-teen awkward body washed by my stepmom, who I loathed then and continue to loathe now. Because my arms couldn't get wet. Of course. Fanfuckingtastic.
I did end up getting the casts off the day before my birthday (I did have to wear a pretty buff splint on the left side and a basic splint on the right for 2 more weeks), so there's that.
5. Anything else you'd like to add? Got a favorite food recipe?
Don't climb trees on Thanksgiving. And my hubs has a recipe for stuffing inside a pumpkin which people seem to like a lot. I don't generally like stuffing, so I don't know. But I'll try to have him find the recipe
Have fun tailgating! We'll be wearing our green and gold.
In the summer of 2013, we went on vacation with my parents, brother, sil, nephew and my sil's family. Our ds was only 10 months old at the time. We stopped at this beautiful lake to take pictures. I had to use the restroom, so I went in there. They had the horrible painted cement, and it was slippery as hell. I took one step, and my front foot slid backwards, and I fell straight forward. All I could think of was protecting my head. I felt instant pain in my arms and started screaming for help. Nobody heard me. So I laid on the ground for a good 10 minutes screaming for help. Nobody came. I managed to push myself up, go to the bathroom and walk out before anyone came to see what was going on. I bawled uncontrollably, as they rushed us back to our cabin. We ended up going to the er. I had broken both of my elbows. My left one was shattered and my right was just fractured. So I was in double arm splints. My arms swelled so bad, I couldn't do anything myself for the first 2 days. My dh had to help feed me, help me pull my pants up and down to use the restroom, shower, and even help me breastfeed our ds. I couldn't hold him for a full week. Talk about mortifying. Thank God I have an amazing husband that didn't even blink, and helped me do everything. My 6 hour car ride home was killer. Every bump we hit about made me go through the roof. My right elbow healed on its own after about a week. My left one was so badly broken that they had to take the broken pieces out and put in fake replacement parts. I can bend it all the way, but I cannot fully straighten it. It goes almost all of the way, and people don't notice unless I point it out to them. I had to go through 10 weeks of physical therapy, and was out of work for 3 months. Needless to say, I haven't gone back there on vacation since then.
2. I'm another who loves all the sides!
3. Definitely not going out for Black Friday. I have the day off to spend it with family not shop. My DH is a manager at a retail store who is open all day and night and most likely won't get to spend Thanksgiving with us plus I used to work retail so I don't go shopping out of protest. Plus most of my Christmas shopping is already done
4. Not sure if this is technically a Thanksgiving memory but when I was pregnant this time last year I had huge cravings for Thanksgiving foods. I made stuffing and mashed potatoes and green bean casserole and cranberry sauce at least 5 times before thanksgiving. I once made DH go out at 9pm to buy bread so I could make stuffing, and being the good man he is he went out. By the time he got home I was too tired to make it but we had it the next day! My mom said that this year she wanted to have a fire in the backyard and we could all sit around it and drink cider. If that happens that will probably be my new favorite memory
5. My favorite recipe is my Nanas sweet potatoes. I'm not sure what she does to them but I've tried to replicate it and it's not the same!
2.While the turkey is always yummy, I look forward to the sides more. Corn casserole, green bean casserole, yams, ALL THE SIDES.
2. What's your favorite food? Stuffing.
3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping? If so, will you go on Thanksgiving or only black Friday? What's your favorite stores? I never, never, never go shopping on Thanksgiving or Black Friday morning. I may go out in the afternoon on Friday if I feel compelled, but it is rare.
4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory? My sister was in college and super hungover on Thanksgiving. My niece was 3 or 4 and my sister was trying to help her make a plate and my niece just kept saying no to every food. My sis lost it and yelled "what the hell DO YOU WANT?!?!" I about peed my pants.
5. Anything else you'd like to add? Got a favorite food recipe? I've got nothin.
2. What's your favorite food?
3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping?
4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory?
2. Dressing and pumpkin pie.
3. Definitely will not be shopping on either day.
4. I don't know that I have a specific favorite Thanksgiving. We always had a lot of people over, and I loved all the family getting together. We'd always eat around 1 or 2 and then play games all afternoon. Leftovers came out around 6:00 and we went for round 2. As I got older, I really enjoyed cooking with my mom.
I'll bring the wine (surprise surprise) no one expects me to bring food because I'm a terrible cook.
2) green bean casserole and cheesy hash brown casserole.
3) I'll have DH do cyber Monday..... I've never Black Friday shopped. I kind of hate shopping period!!!
4) I always loved thanksgiving in Lincoln with my grandparents....children at the folding table and adults at the real table!!!
2. I love the turkey! I can't pick just one though. I love the turkey, ham, potatoes, corn casserole and gravy! I'm just so ready for some good food! I didn't have much of an appetite last year due to morning sickness.
3. I will be working, so no shopping for me. I've gone in years past though. I go for the one time deals that stores don't normally carry. Might hit up cyber Monday!
4. I have to agree with @jjvanwagner25! Last year on Thanksgiving is when we made our huge announcement that we were expecting twins! Our immediate families knew before that, but nobody else did. It was awesome to have everyone so excited about our new adventure.
5. I love the list on the fridge idea! We'll have to do that as the kids get bigger!
