Re: Thanksgiving GTKY

  • Good idea!

1.What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
    - Going to my aunts to be with mom's side of the family. Usually around 30 people! Then on Saturday we'll celebrate with my dad's side. DH's family scatters around the country for Thanksgiving so we don't see them.
    2. What's your favorite food?
    - Forget the turkey, I'm all about the sides! Mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cranberries, rolls, etc. Yuuummm!
    3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping? If so, will you go on Thanksgiving or only black Friday? What's your favorite stores?
    - I always choose to work. I'm not into crowds and it's a good, quiet catch up day at the office.
    4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory?
    - When all of my cousins and I were little we'd all spend Thanksgiving night with my aunt who hosts. We would stay up late, play video games, then play the whole next day while our moms shopped. It was my favorite holiday growing up because they made it a really special two day celebration.
    5. Anything else you'd like to add? Got a favorite food recipe?
    - One holiday tradition my mom had my siblings and I do that I intend to carry on is making Thanksgiving Lists. Before we were allowed to discuss or make our Christmas lists, we each had to write our list of all we're thankful for and hang it on the fridge. We all loved doing this - and enjoyed it more and more as we got older. This year, LO is grateful for: Milk, her favorite toys to chew on, her great daycare teachers, and her mommy and daddy (I hope!!).

  • 1. Thanksgiving day with my family. Friday night through Saturday night we'll go to North Carolina with DH'S family
    2. Mac and cheese
    3. Shopping, probably Friday morning
    4. Looking at the sale papers with my mama, sister, and aunts
    5. Pecan pie
  • 1. Thanksgiving is with my family. Probably about 30 ppl.

    2. I'm with @swaugh14 skip the turkey and give me the sides. Especially stuffing and gravy.

    3. Hell no! There will be no shopping on thanksgiving or Friday.

    4. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because everyone is laid back, no gifts, and tons of food. That's just my favorite memory. Food, family, drinks, dancing. It's always been a big party.

    5. Favorite recipe. My aunts cozy. It's basically a chocolate pudding pie with whipped cream and nuts. But cranberry sauce in the can with the ridges is a close second
  • 1. This year just us with my mom and eating some spot prawns... Because Friday we are having "Christmas" with DH's dad's side and Thanksgiving with them on Saturday. This is the one time all the step kids travel up so we do it all at once. Nice to get in a festive mood.
    2. The paleo person in me wants to say turkey but I eventually give in to the corn casserole and once I do I can't stop :)
    3. Online shopping only
    4. There's a great pic of me and a fav cousin at my grandmas when we were little. He died shortly after and I'm glad the moment was captured.
    5. Wisconsin cranberries and fresh orange juice. 2nd year in a row I've forgotten to order the cranberries in time. Too preoccupied with baby stuff!!
  • 1. Thanksgiving at my in laws house every year, and my dad and brother join us.
    2. Sweet potatoes is probably my favorite.
    3. I'm usually pretty last minute about holiday shopping, and it really bothers me that shopping Thanksgiving is a thing now. People working in retail should get one damn day off.
    4. Best Thanksgiving memory is when a friend joining us was a little tipsy and started commenting on how attractive my dad's girlfriend was.
    5. Nope-- My MIL is an amazing cook, I just do as I'm told on Thanksgiving.
    Coffee Bean Born 6/13/15.
    2nd round exp 8/20/18.
    Meow.
  • 1. What are you doing for Thanksgiving? MIL and FIL are coming to us. Under normal circumstances we would be at their house this year but SIL is too pregnant to fly anywhere so we took advantage and are staying home!
    2. What's your favorite food? I cannot name just one. I heart food.
    3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping? If so, will you go on Thanksgiving or only black Friday? What's your favorite stores? I'd rather die a million deaths than go to a retail establishment Thanksgiving weekend. I may online shop of I have time and know what I'm looking for.
    4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory? Grammie always drying out the turkey while my aunt silently made like 5 gallons of gravy to combat it, without her noticing.
    5. Anything else you'd like to add? Got a favorite food recipe? I make the best apple pie ever...instead of a pie crust on top I do a cinnamon and brown sugar strudel topping. Any excuse I have to make it I do. This year I have mini pie pans and a small crowd so I'm going to make individual pies.

  • 1. We're having another couple over since we can't make it back to WI and they are also away from family.
    2. We always have a really nice cheese tray so the wine and cheese is almost better than the meal.
    3. Nope. I hate shopping and I hate crowds, so black Friday shopping sounds like hell to me. Hello Amazon!
    4. The older I get the more I realize I don't have many warm memories from being a kid. Probably last year when I was putting up the tree and DH and DS got out his train set for the first time. The day after Thanksgiving is going to be for Christmas decorations, movies, and hanging out at home. I also love the Thanksgiving list!
  • ^^greatest story ever??  I think yes. Poor pre-teen @mellymar !
  • Oh @mellymar! I feel bad for your preteen self! Thank you for sharing!

Have fun tailgating! We'll be wearing our green and gold.
  • Omg @mellymar that sounds horrific! I have to say though, I did laugh out loud pretty hard. Mine isn't Thanksgiving related and not near as good, but I have a similar story.

In the summer of 2013, we went on vacation with my parents, brother, sil, nephew and my sil's family. Our ds was only 10 months old at the time. We stopped at this beautiful lake to take pictures. I had to use the restroom, so I went in there. They had the horrible painted cement, and it was slippery as hell. I took one step, and my front foot slid backwards, and I fell straight forward. All I could think of was protecting my head. I felt instant pain in my arms and started screaming for help. Nobody heard me. So I laid on the ground for a good 10 minutes screaming for help. Nobody came. I managed to push myself up, go to the bathroom and walk out before anyone came to see what was going on. I bawled uncontrollably, as they rushed us back to our cabin. We ended up going to the er. I had broken both of my elbows. My left one was shattered and my right was just fractured. So I was in double arm splints. My arms swelled so bad, I couldn't do anything myself for the first 2 days. My dh had to help feed me, help me pull my pants up and down to use the restroom, shower, and even help me breastfeed our ds. I couldn't hold him for a full week. Talk about mortifying. Thank God I have an amazing husband that didn't even blink, and helped me do everything. My 6 hour car ride home was killer. Every bump we hit about made me go through the roof. My right elbow healed on its own after about a week. My left one was so badly broken that they had to take the broken pieces out and put in fake replacement parts. I can bend it all the way, but I cannot fully straighten it. It goes almost all of the way, and people don't notice unless I point it out to them. I had to go through 10 weeks of physical therapy, and was out of work for 3 months. Needless to say, I haven't gone back there on vacation since then.

  • Mine is a funny story in retrospect, totally. But poor @DolphinLover2002 - that REALLY sucks. Tho, you can now say you are part bionic woman!

  • 1. For Thanksgiving we always go to my parents house. They live 5 mins away so it's not like it's a far drive or anything. My grandparents also come over and stay the night.

    2. I'm another who loves all the sides!

    3. Definitely not going out for Black Friday. I have the day off to spend it with family not shop. My DH is a manager at a retail store who is open all day and night and most likely won't get to spend Thanksgiving with us plus I used to work retail so I don't go shopping out of protest. Plus most of my Christmas shopping is already done

    4. Not sure if this is technically a Thanksgiving memory but when I was pregnant this time last year I had huge cravings for Thanksgiving foods. I made stuffing and mashed potatoes and green bean casserole and cranberry sauce at least 5 times before thanksgiving. I once made DH go out at 9pm to buy bread so I could make stuffing, and being the good man he is he went out. By the time he got home I was too tired to make it but we had it the next day! My mom said that this year she wanted to have a fire in the backyard and we could all sit around it and drink cider. If that happens that will probably be my new favorite memory

    5. My favorite recipe is my Nanas sweet potatoes. I'm not sure what she does to them but I've tried to replicate it and it's not the same!

^^ I am probably one of the few who's grandmother isn't a very good Thanksgiving cook  There are meals she makes that are really good though, but thanksgiving isn't that great. Mostly because she cooks the turkey and ham a WEEK in advance so she doesn't have to worry about it the day of Thanksgiving. And the sweet potato casserole is always dark brown instead of orange..is that normal? I love my grandmother and am so thankful for her and her cooking for me even if it's a week old bc I know she did it with so much love. I just don't understand the week old turkey and ham..
  • @ashleymc09 Aw, bless her heart. But ick. A week in advance? That's like asking for food poisoning.
  • 1. We'll be visiting DH's family in Louisiana. I am not looking forward to the 9 hour car and the unknowns that come along with traveling with a baby but we are mainly going to see his 93yo great grandmother.
2.While the turkey is always yummy, I look forward to the sides more. Corn casserole, green bean casserole, yams, ALL THE SIDES.

    3. I am going to try to hit up Cyber Monday and stay away from the stores on Thursday. Thank God for online shopping.

    4. I do not have one particular memory. I just love the whole family getting together to spend time with each other.

    5. I can not wait to enjoy all the yummy this year. Last year was tough with the morning/all day sickness. I have a feeling I will be over indulging.
  • 1. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?  Typically we do my in-laws on Thanksgiving Day and then we go to my aunt's house the Saturday after.  This year, however, we are going out of state to a friend's house to participate in a large pheasant hunt, so we will celebrate there.

    2. What's your favorite food? Stuffing.

    3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping? If so, will you go on Thanksgiving or only black Friday? What's your favorite stores?  I never, never, never go shopping on Thanksgiving or Black Friday morning.  I may go out in the afternoon on Friday if I feel compelled, but it is rare.

    4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory? My sister was in college and super hungover on Thanksgiving.  My niece was 3 or 4 and my sister was trying to help her make a plate and my niece just kept saying no to every food.  My sis lost it and yelled "what the hell DO YOU WANT?!?!"  I about peed my pants.

    5. Anything else you'd like to add? Got a favorite food recipe?  I've got nothin.

  • @Mellymar - Can't believe you broke both arms! In middle school, ugh. I love baking with real pumpkin! Don't really love anything made with the canned stuff.

    1. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
Visiting IL's in Dallas. Will be celebrating FIL's b-day, Thanksgiving and Christmas all in one week :)
    2. What's your favorite food?
    stuffing and mashed potatoes
    3. Are you going to brave the crowds and go shopping?
Nope, but will check out the Online sales
    4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving memory?
I loved childhood Thanksgivings at grandma's, but no single memory really stands out. About 10 years ago, before I met DH, my parents and I went to London for Thanksgiving. It was my mom's first overseas trip. All the Christmas decorations were up, which was really cool.

  • 1. We're going to my MIL's and I'll be bringing a few pies. She's working hard to make it a big fun Thanksgiving. My mom always had a huge one. Since she passed away, it's been pretty low key, but I think she's trying to make it big for LO's first one, which I appreciate.

    2. Dressing and pumpkin pie.

    3. Definitely will not be shopping on either day.

    4. I don't know that I have a specific favorite Thanksgiving. We always had a lot of people over, and I loved all the family getting together. We'd always eat around 1 or 2 and then play games all afternoon. Leftovers came out around 6:00 and we went for round 2. As I got older, I really enjoyed cooking with my mom.
  • 1) my family is 5 hrs away so we will do thanksgiving at DH aunts house.
I'll bring the wine (surprise surprise) no one expects me to bring food because I'm a terrible cook.

    2) green bean casserole and cheesy hash brown casserole.

    3) I'll have DH do cyber Monday..... I've never Black Friday shopped. I kind of hate shopping period!!!

    4) I always loved thanksgiving in Lincoln with my grandparents....children at the folding table and adults at the real table!!!
  • 1. We'll be having lunch with my family. Then, unfortunately, I'll be headed to work for the evening.
    2. I love the turkey! I can't pick just one though. I love the turkey, ham, potatoes, corn casserole and gravy! I'm just so ready for some good food! I didn't have much of an appetite last year due to morning sickness.
    3. I will be working, so no shopping for me. I've gone in years past though. I go for the one time deals that stores don't normally carry. Might hit up cyber Monday!
    4. I have to agree with @jjvanwagner25! Last year on Thanksgiving is when we made our huge announcement that we were expecting twins! Our immediate families knew before that, but nobody else did. It was awesome to have everyone so excited about our new adventure.
    5. I love the list on the fridge idea! We'll have to do that as the kids get bigger!
