Twatwaffle Tuesday

Re: Twatwaffle Tuesday

  • @PleaseSendPicklesNow I am so sorry about your MIL.. Sending positive thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

  • My new neighbors are twatwaffles this week. I don't know exactly what they are doing, but seriously how many times do you need to scrape the bucket of the your tractor down the gravel driveway? There can't be that many potholes that you need to be out there for hours at a time, filling them up. While I am trying to SLEEP. Please stop before I have a meltdown.

Oh, and my doctor's office. Because they canceled my first appointment the day of, like an hour before I was supposed to be there, and rescheduled it for Thursday. Grr!
  • @erin7264 wow I'd be so angry with my Dr.! Don't they know how anxious pregnant women are to be seen & confirm all is well in there!? I'm sorry you have to deal with that!

  • @MsBeachNJ, I *almost* bit off the receptionist's head. Almost. And then I reminded myself that you can't eat the messenger. Apparently the NP was sick that day, so I guess I should be thankful she was sensible enough to stay home and not potentially infect me and baby with whatever she's got.

They don't cancel appointments for no reason. Another patient probably had an emergency. I know it sucks but just know that they would do the same for you if the tables are turned.

Eta yup didn't read that she was sick. You totes don't want to see a sick provider!!
  • She's just my regular NP... I haven't liked her since the day my old Dr left and they switched me over to her. She's a bit of an airhead. But my insurance is switching from Providence to Kaiser around the first of the year, so I really just need her to do the initial appointments/US until things switch and I can find a new GP and look for an OB.

Had I known I was going to be pregnant next year, I'd have stuck with Providence, it would've made things so much easier than switching at the beginning of my 2nd tri and I would have tons of OB's to choose from. Kaiser in my area only has a few OB's to choose from, and no midwives at all. :'(
  • @erin7264 - ugh that sucks. I hate my OB but they are within walking distance from my house and deliver at an awesome hospital so I will just put up with them for the next nine months.
  • @Taymiller - I'm super bummed, honestly. I prefer a female OB and there is only ONE at the Kaiser here - and they only work with one of the two hospitals near me, the one I've had bad experiences at (and they do the rotation thing for L&D - so chance are I'm going to end up with some rando doc I've never even met delivering). Really kicking myself about this but there's nothing I can do, open enrollment closed 4 days before I got my BFP.
  • @Taymiller Curious what hospital? I currently see the team at Univeristy of CO out in Aurora (which is a trek for me now, but closer to Stapleton when I move). It's been extremely difficult for me to find good current info on them. Old posts and reviews are really mixed so I don't know what to think...

So I guess the interwebs are unhelpful and a big twatwaffle.

It may be different in your area, but my Kaiser doesn't allow you to choose your OB. You see whoever is available. Every appointment is on a set schedule And there is no deviating (I tried to get early blood work like I did with my first, but no). My first appointment is with an RN and I've been told to expect it to take 2-3 hours for ultrasound, blood work, and their mandatory orientation.
  • Welcome to the land of HMOs... I've never had Kaiser, but have heard a lot of stories from friends who struggled with their lack of control if anything out of the ordinary happened. I won't do an HMO (or anything that smells like one) because I am WAY too big of a control freak.
  • Thanks to @Taymiller , @SparkySunshine , @MsBeachNJ , @crdo , and @ButterMyBiscuit . @noelietrex , I'm right there with you. We're not yet ready to acknowledge how bad it may get. And I'm wondering how to announce our happy news in the middle of all this. Everyone is so focused on coordinating my MIL's care, and rightfully so. It feels wrong to shift the focus onto us right now.

Oh geez. I like the sound of that even less. The only reason I switched to Kaiser in the first place was because I only get sick about once a year, end up having to pay for my entire appointment thanks to the ridiculous deductibles on our plans and then don't need to go again until the next year. So I switched to the Kaiser HMO with no deductible just to save the $$$.

At least it's not til January... I should be able to get through the first few appointments before I have to switch over.

  • @erin7264 Are you sure it's too late to switch? May be worth calling your HR. Also, you should be able to select a new plan when the babe arrives ("life event" and all), so hopefully it's a limited time annoyance!
  • @LinzerBinzer - Lutheran in wheat ridge. it is awesome. I see the docs at west side women's clinic. They are good doctors but I really want more care and consideration especially with my first. Now that this is my second get me in the door and get me out as fast as possible, and they are so close to my house.

University is a good hospital but just fair warning there are lots of residence and students floating around. I don't mind that but I know it makes some uncomfortable. I can ask my hubby of what hospitals are closer to Stapleton when he gets home.

    *QBF*

I just meant to say that you don't have much choice, not that it's poor care.

I should also add that I know several people who have used Kaiser for their pregnancies and loved it. It sounds like they got far better care than I did at what was supposed to be one of the best hospitals in Southern CA. Nurses forgot my pain meds for hours, gave me a laxative that was meant for a different patient, forgot to take out my catheter until I complained...

It's why I switched, in addition to full coverage of all prenatal care and free birth classes and breastfeeding support.
  • @knitmama - Oh no, I didn't mean to imply that the care is bad. I'm just super uncomfortable with strange doctors in general, I like being able to develop a relationship with one provider - especially with something as important as this, so the idea of seeing a different NP/Dr at every appointment (and then for L&D) is majorly anxiety-inducing. Our Kaiser here does not have it's own hospital, there are just Kaiser docs that do a rotation in the main hospital for Kaiser patients. There isn't separate nursing staff or anything. I'm sure the coverage is great, that's why I switched too. Just not thrilled that I won't get to pick an OB and won't be seeing the same person for appointments and delivery.
  • @erin7264 I totally agree about preferring to have one OB to see consistently. I didn't realize I couldn't before I made my first appointment. I'm trying to remember that for delivery it could be strange doctor anyway, so it doesn't matter too much.
  • @Taymiller Thanks! The random residents and others don't bother me as much and I like my OB practice a lot so don't really want to switch. When it comes to healthcare I am really vocal. I just don't hear about a lot of women choosing that hospital so I wasn't sure. Any feedback is appreciated!
  • Ugh @PleaseSendPicklesNow @noelietrex I'm so sorry to hear about your families. Cancer sucks! @marowan a colostomy and chemo every 2 weeks is awful but at least she's alive! I'm a home care nurse I specialize in infusions and the majority of my patients are receiving that same chemo, it's tolerable for them and really prolongs life! I wish her the best!
  • Cancer is a twatwaffle for me too. My Mom also has pancreatic cancer. It was diagnosed last year 3 days after my bridal shower. She had surgery and many months of complications. She was actually still in the hospital and couldn't come to my wedding. Then chemo & radiation. As of last month her scans were clean, but she's actually in the ER as I type this. Can't keep anything down & it does not appear to be a virus. She can never catch a break.

  • @MrsBinPA - I am so sorry. Pancreatic cancer is the worst, that is what my mil had. They hardly ever catch it earlier enough to do much, glad she was able to have surgery and chemo. Hugs and I hope she feels better soon and doesn't have to stay at the hospital to long
  • @LinzerBinzer - DH said university has an awesome L&D but he said the best he has seen was St.Joes downtown.
  • @Taymiller Thank you! I'm counting down until it's not crazy early to tour them. :) I don't want to leave my OBs unless there's a big difference.

I'm late to reading this but I have Kaiser and I have never had an issue with them. I have been with them for a couple years now but this is my first pregnancy with them. My coworker loved Kaiser during her pregnancies. My insurance coverage is changing in 2016 and everything pregnancy related, prenatal and labor, is going to be free. So that's another benefit. I will say that I hate their dental coverage but other than that I have no complaints. And I also do not get sick often **knocks on wood**

Good luck and I hope your experience with Kaiser gets a lot better!
