Severe intense pain with allergy to Tylenol...

So I am allergic to acetometophin (Tylenol) and I have been having horrible horrible lower back and back rib pain. I literally can't walk or move at times it is so intense. I have been like LIVING in the shower for the past week trying to dull the pain. I have also tried belly band, ice packs, heating pad, two old goats lotion, and my DH is a sweetie and rubs my back daily (Sunday it was like a 7 hour back rub) yet absolutely nothing works. I talked to one of my doctors today and he pretty much told me to get over it but I really can't, im crying on a near nightly basis. Is there any other remedies yall know of that might be able to help????

  • A 2nd opinion?

  • Have you thought of trying acupuncture? I've never done it but some people swear by it
  • No Maneuver even had that cross my mind!! I have done chiropractic but not acupuncture. I am curious if insurance would cover that. Any clue if BCBS insurance might cover..? I also think I am going to try calling for a second opinion tomorrow. I know the last month is painful but I don't think it is supposed to be debilitating and so much pain even lying Down!!!
  • You might be able to get physical therapy covered. They can massage, stretch or do less expected things too, I had some type of electrode or ultrasound therapy for a hip injury once (through an athletic trainer in college--but I think it is probably a typical PT tool).
  • If you can find a DO in your area, they are amazing.
  • My insurance (a version of United) covers acupuncture. It should say in your handbook if it does or not or you can always call the number on the back of your card and ask.
  • Have u been on bed rest? Walking (although painful at first) is the best remedy for my back and body pains personally
  • What is a DO? I have been on modified bed rest. I have been trying to do like 4-5 hour stretches on errands on my feet and such and it is so painful!!! The doctor got upset about how much I have been going out though :(
  • My BCBS insurance covers 30 visits of acupuncture per year in-network. I've been going all year and it's been great. Of course you'll need to check your own insurance. You can just call and and ask if it's covered and BCBS has an website where you can search in network providers. Make sure the acupuncturist is experienced treating pregnant women.

  • Doctor of osteopathic medicine. They learn osteopathic manipulation techniques along with everything an MD (regular doctor) leans. I work at a DO school and get treated every couple weeks and have essentially no back pain. They also help my heartburn and constipation.
  • My insurance is also under the United umbrella and does not cover acupuncture… But at this point you might want to consider trying it anyway. I also agree that physical therapy is something that your healthcare may cover. My healthcare covers chiropractic visits up to 12 per year. I also agree that you should get a second opinion. You shouldn't be suffering in agony crying every night. At least not having tried all of the remedies that you have. Feel better soon mama!
  • Doctor of Osteopathy. It is the less common branch of our medical system but they are full fledged doctors with pretty much the same privileges as MDs. My best primary care provider was a DO they are trained to think a little more holistically than most MDs.
  • Thanks everyone defiantly gives me hope that I won't have to suffer like this for another month!
  • I'm allergic to Tylenol as well so I know your frustration. The chiropractor I seen has done TENS (sp?), haven't tried it during pregnancy but in the past has used cold laser and therapeutic ultrasound on my back, it sucks that it makes you drowsy but my OB has also suggested benedryl. Right now the only way I can get comfortable is with hea red rice bags. They provide moist heat so they've been more helpful to me that the dry heat of heat pads. Physical therapy has also helped this time with gentle minor adjustments, simple stretches, and massage.
