Question about conception while using Paragard IUD

Hey ladies. I couldnt find a forum on BC so I'm posting here. I know the probability of this happening is slim to none but it's something that's driving me crazy. I chose the Paragard IUD almost 5 years ago and have had no real problems with it until the past 8 months.... in February I switched to a new anticoagulant medication, so when my periods changed about the same time I didn't think much of it. I was spotting a little every single day but never had an actual period. In august I saw my obgyn and she put me on provera for 30 days. That kickstarted the most horrendous period of my life and it lasted over a month... I haven't had another period since.... if you go by a typical 28 day cycle I'm over 47 days late! No signs or symptoms of it starting any time soon either. I spoke with the doctor and she didn't seem concerned. The only thing she was concerned about is that the IUD is placed a little low and may cause pain and need to be replaced. I guess my question is have you or anyone you've known ever gotten pregnant with a Paragard IUD? I have no symptoms and at home tests are negative. I'm starting to wonder if I should be pushing harder for the doctor to do blood tests or look for another answer. Thanks in advance!

Re: Question about conception while using Paragard IUD

  • I would say if you're testing negative at home (several times, from the sounds of it?), then the answer is probably no, you're not pregnant. BC can do funny things to menstrual cycles, especially when combined with certain medications. When I had an IUD in for a year I never had my period, and even when I switched to the Ring because of other side effects, I think I had 2 periods in about 2 years. Not exaggerating. My doctor was never concerned, even though on the ring you're "supposed" to have periods just like the pill. Now that I've been off since July, it took me about 6 weeks to get my cycle back, but now it's pretty regular.

  • Yes I've tested at home several times, always negative. The IUD is non-hormonal so it shouldn't have any effect on my cycles to begin with. And I've been on anticoagulant medications for many years which always made my periods really heavy and last about 2 weeks. It's just weird that all of a sudden they drastically changed and then completely went away. I called a different doctor yesterday who was a little more concerned with the placement. He said if it's too low there is a chance that it may not work correctly. So I'm going to see him later this week and hopefully he can figure out what's up.
