Admitted to the hospital

I was diagnosed with preeclampsia on 11/6 at my doctors office at 32 weeks 5 days. I was put on modified bed rest. I wasn't having any complications so I went to run a couple of errands for baby needs with my MIL and SIL. Apparently that was a poor decision. We weren't gone 30 minutes and I started having loss of vision so I came straight to maternity admissions. When I checked in my BP was 165/105. I got an IV, meds to try to bring my BP down, NST, urine specimen, then another specimen via catheter due to some blood in my urine. Then I started having contractions every 5 minutes so she checked my cervix, I was 2 cm dilated, 50% thinned. I was admitted for observation overnight along with a 24 hour urine test. I've been given oral medication now for lowering BP and I'll get that every 8 hours. I also received round one of two steroid shots for baby boys lungs. My BP was 135/91 last time it was checked. I'm pretty worried about that bottom number continuing to be high. Still being monitored. But baby is passing everything with flying colors! Any one have any advice or experiences to share? I've been pretty calm about this but hubs is getting some much needed rest on the couch in our room and I'm having a little middle of the night anxiety.

  • Prayers your way. I hope all is going better by this point
  • Just do what they say. They're the ones to help you deliver on good or bad terms (Keeping positive for good terms). Baby boy will be ok. Just keep that in mind. Unless they say otherwise, just keep thinking he'll be ok. Lots of love and prayer coming your way! I'm just counting my contractions now (35w & 6 days). Thinking of calling the doctor's office.

  • I had preeclampsia my first time around & honestly am just waiting for the shoe to drop this time (33 wks today). I'm glad you went in - don't beat yourself up too much, it's funny how you feel *fine* and then whammo! High bp!!
Good news is is your baby is doing great & you're in good hands at the hospital. My bf delivered her baby girl at 32 weeks (also due to pree) & after a bit in the nicu she is just fine & healthy & a spunky 3-yr-old now!
Best wishes to you, try to rest, you're doing great, mama!
  • Thinking of you and your LO!
  • No experience, but I wanted to let you know that you both are in my thoughts and prayers.

  • Hopefully you can maintain a pressure like that for a while and they get your contractions under control so you can keep baby cooking as long as possible. It's sounds like you're in good hands and if it makes you feel any better, I have pregnancy induced hypertension with a high risk to develop pre e and I've been managing med free with similar and higher pressures for a few weeks now. As hard as it, try and keep calm. My doctor told me that at your baby's gestational age they do great with all the advancements they have now!
My thoughts and prayers go out to you.
  • No experience but sending tons of thoughts and prayers.
  • Sending you and your LO prayers. I don't have much more experience except I am being monitored for high BP at home and seeing a doctor twice a week at almost 34 weeks. I am so glad you went to the hospital and you are in the best place you can be. It's also so scary how fast this stuff with blood pressure can change! Take are and rest and remember they will do the best for your baby.
  • No experience here, but you're in my thoughts. Like PPs said, it's a good thing you went in. You're in the best place to be at this point.

  • Sorry you're having such a rough time!! I'll be thinking of you and the babe.
  • I was diagnosed with pre-e at 35 weeks and was hospitalized. My BP was higher then yours, I had a massive headache that wouldn't go away, and very blurry vision. but I was never put on meds or anything since I was so late in the pregnancy. It was too late for steroid shots for the baby so I basically was on hospital bed rest. Just trying to get me as close to 37 weeks as possible. I started to spill protein at 36 weeks so my son was born at 36 weeks. I literally stayed away from social media and really didn't tell anyone I was in the hospital so I wouldn't be stressed. I just took the time to really rest and sleep and enjoyed spending time with my hubby.
  • It sounds like your care team is on top of things!  Good luck and I hope you can keep the little guy in for a bit longer!  Take care.
  • Thinking of you and LO. Hope you can keep him in there for a while longer!!

I had both severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome with my first.  When they finally diagnosed me at the hospital about 2 weeks after I started feeling ill, I was far enough along (34 weeks 6 days) and blood pressure was 210/118 so emergency c-section was my only option.  My son was perfectly fine, too.  I was the one who was having all the issues.  Since you are before 34 weeks, they are trying to get you to that mark or further, if they can.  If they can't get you there, you will likely have an emergency c-section.  I know from experience, that this isn't ideal, but this is best for both you and baby.  Hang in there.  I hope that things get better so baby can bake a little while longer.  You are in my thoughts.

Update: I seem to be responding to the BP medicine pretty well so we will be here at the hospital until we have him which they said will be at 34 weeks. If my BP is still doing well like it is now I'll be induced next Tuesday. But obviously if something changes drastically with either me or baby between now and then I will have a c-section. We met with a neonatologist this afternoon and he was very informative and we get to tour the NICU today or tomorrow. They seem to think the only issues we may have is just him learning to feed once he is here. They told me that preeclampsia causes babies lungs to accelerate in development so there is a good chance that in combination with the steroid shots that his breathing should be okay. We feel very relieved and thankful for all the prayers. They are working and we get to meet our baby boy in one week!!!
Glad to hear that you are doing well, despite everything.  The info you got from the nenatologist is spot on.  My son had feeding issues but had no problems with his lungs.  Glad you were able to talk to him/her in advance.  I didn't get the chance to know what was going to happen because everything was an emergency with me.
