C-sections

C section birth plans

I'm a FTM who is booked in for a C/S on the 4th Dec. I have been thinking about birth plans over the last few days and have no idea what to include, what to push for and what is not so important. Any ideas would be great :) if your willing to share yours that would be great too!

Re: C section birth plans

  • I'm scheduled for my 3rd c-section on Dec. 15. Much of this stuff is standard at the hospital where I deliver, but it doesn't sound like it's that way everywhere.

    - Skin to skin as soon as possible.
    - Breastfeeding as soon as possible.
    - Not to be separated from your infant.
    - If the baby needs to go somewhere, designate someone to go with the infant (husband, partner, parent, whatever).
    - Having your catheter out as soon as possible.
    - Getting you up and moving as soon as possible.

  • All of what PP said. I'd definitely ask your dr what is "normal" for the hospital you are delivering at as it does seem to vary drastically from one place to the next.

  • I was able to do delayed cord clamping during my last c section and I am very glad I at least asked about it instead of assuming it wouldn't be allowed. Maybe also mention you would like to hold the baby while being wheeled into recovery.
  • Can I ask why delaying cord clamping was beneficial? :)
  • Delayed cord clamping increases perfusion from the cord blood for the first moments after birth. This blood is especially oxygen rich and allows baby to be perfectly perfumed while they take their first breaths on their own.
There is a picture of twins born and one had delayed cord clamping and one didn't. The one with delay was considerably more pink compared to their sibling.
  • Thank you for the info about cord clamping :) I will definitely be asking about it :) how long should it be delayed for?

Until the cord stops pulsing. Each pulse is like when your heart beats, and moves the blood.

  • I had an unplanned c section. My husband had wanted to cut the cord. We assumed he wouldn't be able to but we asked anyway. The OB cut the cord long so my husband could trim it during the clean up and measuring stage.

I had heard (and could totally be wrong) that in the case of c-sections delaying doesn't do much because once the uterus is cut the placenta stops sending blood. Again, could totally be wrong, but something to look into if you're interested.

  • I think the dr. Said they let her cord pulse for about two minutes before they cut it.
  • So today I spoke with the Doctor doing my c-section about delayed cord clamping. She said recent research says that while it's very beneficial for preterm babies, in full term babies it can increase the chances of jaundice in the neonate. So didn't recommend it for full term births. Makes sense and very interesting.
