June 2016 Moms

Breastfeeding articles on pinterest

Hey all,

I've been creeping Pinterest lately for some info on breastfeeding. The articles that say "stuff they don't tell you about BF" & things like that. I'm picking up some helpful tips for when the baby is born! Any second time moms out there have any tips? (Including info about lotions & things to put on nips when they get sore or what not!)

I thought I would post this question on the June 2016 moms since some of us might be breastfeeding at the same time this summer & we can all share the joys or woes!

Thanks girls !

  • Or any first time moms.. Really anyone. Haha. I don't have any friends or family who BF so the internet & books are my go to!

    Thank you! Will do.
  • The first time I had to nurse in public was at a bar down the street from my house. We went for lunch to watch the World Cup. I was still trying to figure out nursing and nursing without the boppy so I didn't bother adding a cover to that mix. It was terrifying but also liberating! NIP every time after that was a breeze!

  • If you're super sore, ask your doc for the "triple nipple cream." It's seriously heaven-sent. I had NO success with lanolin or anything you can buy at the store. The script stuff has an antibiotic, antifungal and something else and it's amazeballs. Amazeballs. The tiniest dab helps within minutes.

I had a pitbull nursling who had horrible reflux and wanted to nurse constantly to soothe his poor throat, then mastitis the day after Christmas. The cream was the only thing that kept me BFing for 13 months.
  • And seriously, if you can't nurse with a cover in public, have confidence and just do it. It's liberating and once baby is attached, you can't see anything anyway.

So true.  I HATED my cover, things got so hot under it, I worried my baby was sweating to death and nobody can see anything with baby's head in the way.  I found 'the badass breastfeeder' VERY helpful.  And try not to worry too much, it's hard at first but you'll get the hang out it.  I remember I had a bit of trouble in the beginning with latching, but by the end of the first month I could nurse with one hand, and play video games with my DH with the other hand.

  • I BF DS for 18 months. I went back to work at 6 weeks and pumped, sometimes 5 times a day. Some tips? I started with nipple butter about 20 weeks pregnant and got my ladies used to being roughed up. At about 37 weeks, I kinda beat them up with a wash cloth in the shower. When DS was born, I had him latch immediately. They took him, weighed him, and I strapped him on. He fed for about an hour. Don't let them take the baby right away - fight with them. Also, don't let other Moms on the floor scare you. Do what you think is best. I stocked up on those adhesive gummy nip pads and had a few sets. I put them in the fridge. Heaven. Explain to your family and friends you are breast feeding and that they need to be comfortable seeing a boob. I never apologized and just did it in front of them whenever DS was hungry. I also had some of those lanoish purple pads you heat up in the microwave which helped when I needed my milk to drop. Whenever you feed, drink lots of water. I took fenugreek and it really helped a lot. I started pumping at four days and had a good stock pile for when I went back.

  • Buy a ton of fenugreek! I had super low supply that eventually ran when I went back to work. And invest in a good pump! Def find a BF group in your area and go week 1!!
  • KellyMom.com is one of the best sites out there. Lots of evidence based info on that site. Infant Risk hotline needs to be written down & consulted anytime you are told to "pump & dump" for a med. Most likely the doctor telling you that doesn't have a damn clue & is all about CYA. Infant Risk is ran by Dr Thomas Hale who literally wrote the book on breastfeeding & medications. LactMed is another good one but I prefer just calling Infant Risk.

  • My biggest surprise with breastfeeding was how hard it was. I thought it would be a breeze. Instead it was about 5 months of problems before we got it figured out. My advice is to find resources now so you know where to turn for help if you need it. La Leche League meetings or consultants. My city has free clinics through public health. I went on to breast feed for almost 28 months (DD stopped the second I got pregnant).
  • Story time because again they teach you nothing in highschool and college regarding this stuff. I was bfing DD and pumping as well for when I went back to work as an RN. We had a meeting and I didn't take my pump with me. I would typically feed DD on one side and pump on the other. When we got to the meeting dd was hungry and when I let down things shot everywhere. I didn't know boobs could shoot like a water gun. DD was hungry crying and choking I was squirting milk all over the bathroom and it was miserable. So don't be surprised if you over produce either. Production may or may not be a problem.
  • I'm with @satcher08, I'm a wealth of information about EPing. I exclusively BF for 3 weeks, and transitioned to exclusively pumping (after some horrible cracked nipples and a baby screaming through an aggressive let down). I went on to EP for 9 months- quit after my supply diminished overnight from mastitis.

One thing I've heard about NIP is do it with a group of friends around the first couple of times. You'll feel kind of protected and more comfortable with your friends around.

Oh my goodness, the letdown. I can feel it even now after 6 years! I used to press as hard as I could over my nipple on the side I wasn't nursing on to prevent the massive leaking. Or just pump that side....

Get a bracelet/hair tie or something to wear on the wrist of the side you're nursing on to prevent the sleep-deprived boob juggle to see which side you need to start with the next time.

I thought BFing was supposed to be this amazingly natural thing, but it's totally something you AND baby need to learn. Try to get one (or several!) times with an LC in the hossy.

Yes to double checking if you need to pump and dump! I got a nasty ear infection when DS was about 5 months old and the doctor I saw said I needed to pump and dump. I bawled my eyes out for 24 hours straight. I called my OB to see if he could switch me to a different antibiotic and I felt foolish when he told me the antibiotic I was on was perfectly safe. I poured so much perfectly good milk down the drain!

  • I EBF for almost a year after having a breast reduction surgery and being told by everyone and their mother that I'd probably never BF. If anyone has had breast surgery and wants to BF, I'm happy to answer any questions.

    Here are my tips:

    1. Nipple shields are great for flat nipples or pain. Never caused any nipple confusion for my kiddo.

    2. Fenugreek

    3. Re: NIP. It's also ok if you don't want to nurse in public. I was never really ok with it. I totally support others doing it, but I am weirdly private and couldn't deal. Nursing in the car always worked for me. With baby 2 I may need to get over the modesty because we have way more going on.
