  • @xokateox Your shot can pass some level of immunity onto your unborn baby, but my understanding is that it is nowhere near as effective as the baby getting the actual shot (which of course newborns can't get), so often it is recommended that others around the newborn get the shot, because they can still pass the virus to the baby, even if you got the shot.  I haven't decided exactly how I'm going to handle this with family, but I figure I will gently broach the conversation around the holidays when I see everyone and just sort of feel them out.  Hopefully most of them will already have gotten it anyway.

  • My OB said it best, "Why would you not want to do whatever you could to protect your child?"

    Good point doctor lady.

Got mine October 20th. I've had first dates more painful than the flu shot. DH, my sister and BIL all got them too because science and to be around our newborn daughter.

I got mine a few weeks ago. At first I told the nurse no and she told me my doctor would eventually make me get it. Women who are pregnant and get the flu usually end up in the hospital. I dont want to take that chance with my baby. It was also a different kind of shot for only pregnant women.

Omgosh WHERE are you getting your information?? There's NOT a special version for pregnant women and your doctor CAN NOT force you to do ANYTHING!

Pregnant with the flu doesn't mean automatic hospitalization either..... Wow

Almost everyone I know who has gotten the flu vaccine has come down with the flu.  Not to mention, I've heard the flu vaccine only treats the most common strand of the virus, so if you catch a different stand, it won't do you any good.

I've had the flu twice in my life.  Once in middle school and I was sick for two weeks, ran a high enough fever that I remember hallucinating!  I couldn't walk on my own.  It was awful.  I got a mild case of it right after my baby was born, she was 3 months old.  The worst part of it was having to send her to my sister's for three days while I recovered.  So yeah, no thanks on the shot!

I'm confused, if you had the flu and it was terrible, why aren't you getting the shot? The flu shot CANNOT give you the flu. It does not contain a live virus. As you said, it protects against most, not all strains (this year's protects against 10 strains, pretty good odds!) so it is still possible, though not likely, to come down with the flu.

The flu is one of the deadliest viruses. Thousands die annually, and totally needlessly. There is no good reason for a healthy person NOT to get this vaccine.
It's NOT one of the deadliest viruses. Can you PLEASE educate yourself and do some research?
  • Nope. Absolutely not. Believe it or not, despite what lie your doctor and the CDC feeds you, but the flu shot has NEVER been cleared as safe for pregnant women. Don't believe me? Ask for the vaccine insert, not that ridiculous handout they give you, and read it yourself. I believe it's in section 8.

Also, we aren't high risk and aren't going to die from it. The statistics that state people die from it include those with other diseases and pneumonia. Remove all those cases and death is incredibly rare. Please, don't reply with anecdotal stories about your bosses nephews neighbors girlfriend being perfectly healthy. I said rare, not impossible.

It takes 4-6 weeks to become affective so no one can claim no side affects if they are within that window. It's typically less than 25% effective since they guess the stains that will be common and they typically guess wrong. It's not ten strains either. Wow. It's usually like 4-5. It also stops working after so many months so those of you who got it in Sept/Oct it'll probably wear off by the time you have your baby.

The other shot that's being forced down our throats, "whopping cough" one, is actually dtap (tdap??) Which is a three in one. if you look at what it includes, one of the three is diphtheria. Check out if that's been approved for pregnant women ;)

I take plenty of vitamin supplements, drink emergen c almost every day, and use essential oils (you know, eastern medicine which is natural). I haven't gotten the flu in five years. Every year I have, has been the years I've gotten the shot-because it doesn't work.

Finally, no one, and I mean NO ONE can force any of us to do ANYTHING.

I just want to add to the "get a flu shot" chorus. Get the shot! You can get it right at your OBs office, the drugstore, or even at your work place in some cases! No brainier in my opinion once my doctor recommended it. I never got one before I was pregnant because I was just ambivalent I guess but with everything else we do (food restrictions) to avoid getting sick while pregnant, why not this too?

Question for the group though, I've heard from some posters in the past that you should ask family members to get the flu shot if they're going to be near your baby a lot. But if your shot passes immunity to your unborn baby, than wouldn't it be overkill to ask everyone to get the shot also? I know I should ask a doctor this question instead but, whatever...

If I discover ANYONE recently got any shot, they won't be allowed around my newborn.
  • Because the baby will be born during flu season and my toddler will be bringing home all the germs from daycare and babies can't be vaccinated until six months, I am going to get one sometime before I deliver. I'm not really worried about my own health, but a newborn can't take anything to make symptoms better if she gets sick. I don't want her to end up in the hospital because she caught something from her older brother.

Man these posts really erk me since everyone tries to tell you that it won't work. My doctor recommended it to me and you know what, I will listen to them because that is just me and they know better than I do. No, we won't die from it but it is just uncomfortable to be pregnant and feel like crap. It's more of protecting yourself so you don't have to suffer through an illness and your LO cannot fight for themselves so might as well help them. I found your section 8 online and that's fine if it's not cleared to be safe but if it was deemed "unsafe" at all then pregnant women would not be able to get it or offered to us. The only people who should NOT get the flu shot are babies younger than 6 months or who have an allergy to eggs or any other ingredients in the vaccine.

The bottom line: you make the decision whether it was advised for you by your doctor. Think about it or talk it over with your SO and decide whether it is right for you or not. If you don't want to get it then don't, if you do then do it. It's that simple. I understand seeing what others have done or if they had any side effects, etc but those saying it doesn't work doesn't help anybody. Just say you decided not to get it because it's not worth it to you or say you got it and if you had any effects.

Furthermore, saying the flu shot does not work because you got the flu those years? There is not enough evidence to back that up. Your flu case could have numerous factors that played a part in you getting sick that we won't know. I have gotten the flu shot every year since I can remember and I have not had the flu in over a decade. I got the flu shot just because I could and if I can protect my LO anyway I can, I will. You are right though, no one can force you to do anything, like I said before, get the flu shot if you want or don't.

I was given a different shot than my kids and my husband. I don't think it was much different but because I was pregnant I didn't have the same one they did. I went two days ago with them and she explained that to me. Where are YOU getting YOUR "facts"? Too me your posts sound way more out to lunch than anything these ladies have stated.
There is a very good chance you did in fact get a different shot.  Thimerosal is a mercery-based preservative found in flu shots and there IS a shot that you can get that is Thimerosal-free.  However, there are upsides and downsides to having the Thimerosal-free vaccine because the preservative is a safeguard from germs.  Really, what it comes down to is that anyone's risk of an adverse effect (especially if you have gotten the flu vaccine with zero issues) is so incredibly low the benefits completely outweigh the risks.

@sharkgirl7 the crap your spouting just doesn't have enough evidence to be backed up.  There is an alternative vaccine, it is approved (hell, recommended) by the CDC to be administered to pregnant women (But you've already told us you don't believe in the CDC), and we are in fact high-risk just because we're pregnant.  Doesn't matter if you have a low-risk pregnancy, you're still high-risk.  Maybe not of getting the flu, but if we do catch it, it is more harmful to us and more harmful to our babies.

  • @jellybellybean3 I actually got my flu vaccine done today and they gave me the one without the preservatives/thimerosal in it as well!  I didn't necessarily ask for it, but the nurse did tell me they typically give pregnant women (granted I was at a university health center and they don't see very many pregnant girls) the one without the preservatives just in case, even if the amount of mercury in the other one is so teeny tiny!

  • Oh, the 'it says so on the insert' argument. That doesn't mean that pregnant women shouldn't get the flu shot. You have to understand the context of those inserts/ warning labels.

Nothing has been 'cleared safe' for pregnant women. Even with Tylenol, the insert/ directions says you have to consult with your dr if you are pregnant. The inserts and directions in the vaccines are written by pharmaceutical companies to shield them from any potential liabilities. Those are not medical advice.
Doctors consider risk of not getting the flu shot v the risk from the vaccine and recommend it. That's the medical advice, not the insert in the vaccine.

Doctors are suppose to notify the flu manufacturers every time they give a shot to a pregnant woman. They also cannot get sued if you have any reaction. Next?

You know that there's like 6+ different shots out there, right? Only one is approved for a select group of people. They are: children as young as six months, breastfeeding moms and elderly. The rest is up to the providers discretion. Just because you got something different than your husband doesn't make you special.

  • @sharkgirl7  in addition, Emergen-C is not approved for pregnant ladies. Their own website says you need to consult with your doctor before doing so. So I guess you know best over medical providers which warning insert to follow and which insert not to follow.

Okay seriously. If I hear one more idiotic quip about how doctors know more about drugs and such.... Really? REALLY? They go to no form of pharmaceutical training. None. They get info from textbooks that are written by drug manufacturers. The rest comes from the drug reps that promise the doctors kick backs.

If you guys are serious about who knows what, talk to, oh I dunno A PHARMACIST.
  • Doesn't the flu shot hold its effectiveness for around 6 months? So even if it did "wear off early"... We're all due in around 3.5-4 months.
ETA::: the flu shot becomes effective within TWO WEEKS.

I'd rather have the flu shot and not need it than be sick and chance being hospitalized by a virus I could have prevented OR lowered the effects of.

Also, essential oils haven't been approved safe.... And they're NOT medicinal. Nor has emergen-c.

  • Keep up with putting me down guys. I don't blindly trust doctors anymore

I'm actually seeing a home birth midwife and she supports everything I'm doing and recommends it to all her mamas.

My kids are completely healthy. No food allergies, no "gluten free" food, no illnesses, etc.

And my "eastern medicine" comment was meant to mean I don't put untested crap in my families bodies. Yes, vaccines aren't fully tested. But if you want to direct me to "studies" that were created by pharma companies, or IFL, don't bother.

Essential oils and vitamins have kept my kids away from seeing the doctors for two years and helped my husband with kidney stones and kept him not once, not twice, but three times out of the ER.

They haven't been approved by the FDA because they honestly don't want competition, ie things that'll actually help and heal us not keep us sick. In case you didn't know, doctors are in the sick business. If no one was sick, they would be out of a job.
