Despite being Norwegian and living in Norway we do thanksgiving (why pass on any occasion to eat good food?). Lots of homemade gravy, corn pudding, (mashed) potatoes, sweet potato mash, stuffing, creamed pearl onions, cranberry sauce. Pumpkin pie for dessert
For Christmas we do pork belly roast - crispy crackling is a must!
So for those of you who don't much like turkey, have you ever tried making duck? Especially if you like the darker meat, it is delicious! And doesn't take quite as long to make as it is smaller. We always stuff it with granny smith apples (or any other sour apple). Occasionally, I'll add raisins and walnuts to the stuffing. It is truly to die for. Another alternative is a goose, but geese tend to be just as dry as turkey.
We don't like turkey, but this year might make it just because hubby is getting a free one from work. Outside of that, the only other "traditional" foods our family will embrace is pecan pie and homemade cranberry sauce.
I adore duck and order it whenever I can when I'm out. I've never tried making one myself but if I do I'll have to try the Granny Smith stuffing; it sounds amazing!
At Thanksgiving I like it all - turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, dinner rolls, sweet potatoes, and both pumpkin and apple pies with real whipped cream. My mom also used to make this raspberry Jell-O dessert (with marshmallows and cream cheese) that I would pretty much end up eating all by myself.
My favorite holiday meal is Christmas dinner though - my family tradition is standing rib roast. So. Damn. Good.
We'll have to have a recipe sharing thread for Thanksgiving favorites pretty soon. I absolutely love my grandmother's giblet gravy she makes after the turkey comes out of the oven and making cranberry sauce from scratch... mmm once you have it from scratch, out of the can just seems so wrong.
I need this recipe! I asked. My grandma how to make it, and she laughed at me because she just does it without thinking.
I make some bitchen eggnogg and use that for cheesecake every year. Kinda sucks that my side of the family is now all vegan so I usually have a lot of it left over, and it's too rich to have more than once...
Fudge $hizz crap!! It's 1am, can't sleep kinda hungry and I've just noticed this thread... Now I'm super hungry and considering making myself some stuffing (box stuffing I keep in case of a...um...stuffing emergency?)if only I had mashed potatoes and gravy!! (
Stuffing, apple pie, biscuits, mashed potatoes... and there MUST be cranberry sauce, even if it's straight out of the can.
My mom would also say sweet potatoes, but, ugh... I don't like them, haha!
My grandma makes wonderful homemade cranberry sauce with fresh fruit but I always buy a can of it for at home. I don't know why I love it so much but its my favorite thathanksgiving food.
