Milk supply drying up... Advice?

From the beginning my LO has had latching issues and had to use a shield and took about an hour to feed each time. Makes for long long nights for sure. One day I decided for my sanity, that I would just pump and bottle feed. Since I don't produce enough milk I have to supplement with formula. Lately due to just being so busy with a new baby, I haven't had much time during the day to pump. Now, bc of me only getting a couple pumps a day in my supply has plummeted even more than it already was. What can I do to build my supply back up? I've been eating all the lactation boosting foods and drinking lots of water. What else is there?

  • Pump, pump, pump like crazy. Even better would be nurse, nurse, nurse, but if that's not an option, the more you pump your breasts dry, the more they'll think they need to produce.

  • Power pump. Take an hour or two when someone else can watch the baby and pump ten minutes on/ten minutes off for the full time frame you've set aside. Try and do it once a day. Also, it's important not to skip overnight pumping sessions. The window of 2-5 am has the highest production for a lot of women, so make sure to get a session in there. Try to get at least a 4 hour chunk of sleep a night if baby will let you. Pump whenever baby takes a nap during the day if you have to. You just need to decide if providing baby with breast milk is a higher priority than folding laundry, or scrubbing the tub, or any of the dozen other things we do when baby naps. If you have a partner involved you should also get their input on this priority. I couldn't keep up with pumping if I didn't have the full support of my boyfriend. It's way more work than nursing, and whatever you can provide is awesome for baby. Good luck!
  • Supplements didn't help me. I literally tried everything. I also ep due to baby mouth/ eating issues. First there's a great fb support group for exclusively pumping mothers. Second you must pump for at least 20 mins every session. Before 12 weeks our milk supply is hormone driven and you need to put in the time and pump diligently. Every 2 to 3 hours.. I know it's tough I'm living it now but after 12 weeks your supply regulates and you can start to drop pumps. Power pumping is pump till empty then rest ten pump 10 rest 10 pump ten. Power pump boot camp is replacing 4 of your daily pumps with power pumps two days in a row. It's the only thing that helped me consistently pump above 30 oz a day. Some ladies are saying ovaltine malt or chocolate malt helped them I'm trying it today. Gl!
