1st Trimester

Is it okay to stop taking metformin after finding out your pregnant?

Tried to conceive for over a year. OB diagnosed me with PCOS after an ultrasound and bloodwork and placed me on metformin on 9/25. Took 500mg once a day for a week then 1000 the next week. Conceived on 10/4 and now 6 weeks today. OB said its not from the metformin and I can stop since it's not really in my system. But now I'm reading all these forums about how it helps decrease risk of miscarriage etc. Am I safe to stop it? Or at least just taper it off? I only have a few tablets left. And I've literally only been taking it for less than a month. (Btw my first pregnancy I didn't use metformin nor did I know I had PCOS...still got my period every month just very irregular so don't think I'm a typical PCOSer- just had a bunch of cysts in my ovary)

  • I'm surprised you were told to stop. I continued to take it for the first trimester as my OB recommended. I'd personally be wary of stopping it so soon. If I were you I'd get a second professional opinion.

  • I took metformin for about 4 months until I conceived. When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately stopped the medication. My doctor had told me after at my first prenatal visit that they sometimes have women continue taking the metformin if they have been taking it for some time to help them through the first trimester. I stopped the metformin at 5 weeks pregnant and am now 11 weeks.
  • Call your doc and ask. I was told to stay on it for first tri. There is some evidence it decreases miscarriage risk in women with PCOS.

  • Thank you for your response. I think I will just take it thorough the first trimester- seems like it won't hurt anyway to take it but more of a risk to not take it.
  • Thank you for your response. Glad your pregnancy is going smoothly!
