Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

Hello Ladies,
I'm still a bit new, and have been lurking and participating, but I wanted to pose a question. Do any of you ladies that already have a child or multiple children have experience with Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction? I have been on bed rest this week due to muscle spasms in my back and my medical team are considering a C-section, as they want to avoid my getting Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction. We're currently working on physical therapy to resolve the issue before birth, but I wanted to know if anyone has experience with this? If you do, do you have any advice or suggestions for treatment? Thank you for your time and help in advance  :D

  • Sorry, in 10 days and think I will just be given a support belt x
  • @littlekick thank you for responding. If I may, what did they do the first time around, if they did anything?
  • They didn't do anything, my midwife with my 2nd child was always sick or away on my appointment days so I didn't see anyone at all past my 20 week scan so I didn't really know what it was all I knew was that I could hardly walk, I called the hospital on my due date in tears saying I was worried as I hadn't had any check ups since 20 weeks and I didn't know what I was supposed to do now that my due date was here, they asked me to go in so they could check me over they gave me a sweep and I had him 2 days later, this time round I've had a great midwife who's been with me all the way through from the start and when I explained to her about the pain I was in and how it was the same with my previous pregnancy ( both boys) but not my 1st pregnancy (a girl) she knew exactly what it was and has refered me straight to the hospital for physio but it's a long waiting list and she said they will prob give me a belt and maybe crutches x
  • @littlekick wow that's crazy. I'm glad you got a better experience the next time around.
  • I'm in quite a bit of pain right now around my pubic bone. All symptoms seem to point to SPD but how do they actually diagnose this? I have an appt with the OB Monday but just curious how you ladies were diagnosed.
  • I have this as well as had it with my daughter. Nothing works for me. I have been to PT, have worn a couple different belts and nothing seems to work. I was able to deliver my first natural with no problem and did not need a c section. The pain went away almost as soon as I had her.
  • @missaero according to my OB, I wouldn't get it unless I delivered vaginally and it caused misalignment in my spine. There's apparently no cure for it, just therapy.  I've been going to a chiropractor and it's helped a lot. Right now, I'm at the stage of figuring out if we could fix this stuff with my back and let me deliver vaginally, if I can't I have to have a C-section.
  • I had a rough time with SPD starting at around week 20 and could barely walk, turn over in bed, or do much of anything it hurt so badly. My midwife recommended a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic issues and she was able to diagnose the problem (literally felt the misalignment of my public bone and felt my hip bones to see that they were not balanced). She gave me exercises to do and I found that if I do the exercises in the mornings and evening they REALLY help. I also bought a support belt that I use when I know I will be walking a lot.

Have you looked at the spinning babies website? They have some really good exercises that may help. I used them my last pregnancy when I was dealing with horrible pelvic pain (due to cartilage separation during my first delivery). Helped get me aligned correctly as well as helped with the pain. I also strongly recommend Craniosacral Therapy (CST). I strongly believe CST combined with spinning babies exercises led to me being able to have a smooth, uncomplicated vaginal delivery after the train wreck of a birth I experienced with #1.

  • Like @Virginiaoat it started for me around 18 weeks and was absolutely miserable. I was in so much pain I wasn't functioning which isn't acceptable with a lo running around. I started physical therapy with a therapist specializing in pelvic issues. She found several places around my lower back, hips and pelvis that were misaligned, taught me how to check alignment, and exercises to gently realign everything and maintain the alignment. Only once we got everything back in alignment and inflamation was managed was I allowed to use a support belt, she said if alignment is off or there's inflammation that a belt can cause more harm than good.

I started pt back in July and now I still have pain with certain movements or if I do too much (I have to rest more than I like) but my bones seem to be somewhat settled into their proper positions. We've also added in some exercises lately to help prepare my body for delivery and later we'll work on pp recovery.
  • Third go around with this!  It is awful and I found nothing helped previously. This time I have walked 4xs week for an hour and it feels worse right after but then improves.  Supposedly exercise does help...if you are up for it.  My first was by far the worst.  My son was really low and I could barely get up the stairs or out of my car. My daughter was better and this one (girl) has been as well.  Good thing is it went away as soon as they were born, and did not interfere with my labour at all.
