Let's Talk Thanksgiving

Since one of America's best holidays is just next month let's talk about what you plan on cooking on the big day.  I think I'm the most excited I've ever been for Thanksgiving, because I'm living under this beautiful delusion that when Thanksgiving occurs, I'll be so far along in my pregnancy that MS will disappear and I will finally enjoy eating food again.  Beautiful, greasy, fattening, non gagging inspired food.  So please feel free to join me in discussing what you'll be cooking up, and let's give each other virtual food-gasms.

Re: Let's Talk Thanksgiving

  • I will be making all of the pies, pumpkin, dutch apple with hot carmel sauce and pumpkin pecan pie....mmmm can't wait for Thanksgiving and Christmas!
  • Loading the player...
  • My cousin is hosting Thanksgiving this year, but I'm going to be in charge of mashed potatoes, an appetizer, and a sweet. I think I'm going to try my hand at blackberry or peach cobbler.
  • I just ordered potato peeling gloves on Amazon. also: we told our immediate family so it's less stress. and then we told his close aunt and somehow she's coming too...and my aunt and uncle...and voila we are at 14. at my house.

if I flip out at least I can blame it on hormones
  • We're going to family's and haven't been asked to bring anything yet but I'm most looking forward to mashed potatoes and stuffing and mac and cheese...all the carbs!!
  • Not sure yet, but I'll be eating all the food, and double helpings of stuffing!

  • Dinner at MIL's house this year. I'm usually in charge of bringing a few pies. I don't have high hopes for eating all the things. Two years ago when I was pregnant with DS I only started liking food about a week before Thanksgiving and I was 5 weeks further along with him than I will be with this LO.

  • UO- I hate thanksgiving food. Vegetarian here. I eat very small amounts of chicken because it's more out of pickyness than anything else. I make cheesecakes for everyone (we host since we have the biggest house, ILs live in Orange County and just downsized couple years ago) so everyone stays with us. I make Mac and cheese for me and DH does all the traditional stuff for everyone else. He's a great cook. I want to try making cranberry sauce from scratch this year though.
  • We go to my parents and I usually bring some snacks for pre and post partying!

That's means shrimp cocktail and veggies. :-)

  • Tofurkey! I'll probably bring pie to my in-laws.. Usually buy it but maybe I'll bake this year. We'll see!

  • My sister hosts T-Day. She goes all out with the traditional foods. Sadly I usually can't eat the pies, stuffing or Mac n cheese she makes (I have celiac and the gluten free varieties aren't great) but she makes me gluten free gravy for the turkey and loaded mashed potatoes. Oh and sweet potatoes. Yum!
  • i'm not sure yet, we go to my parents. But, the thought of all the awesome food does nothing for me, I feel like i'm broken :( I really hope this weird phase has left by then. Especially because we're not telling anyone until xmas and I have to fake drink. Hopefully I don't have to fake eat too, lmao

  • @WinniethePoohsPants I am hoping for the same thing!! Please no nausea while I'm cooking the bird!

@mrszoess what are these gloves you speak of?? I'll be looking them up as soon as I'm done here!

We host Thanksgiving, so I'll be making turkey, ham (DHs grandma doesn't eat poultry, so they always have ham and turkey) mashed potatoes, roasted sweet potatoes, stuffing, maybe Brussels sprouts, and an app or two. Last year I made butternut squash soup for an appetizer and it was pretty good, so I may be doing the same. I'll probably make a paleo dessert for my sister and me, as she can't have gluten or dairy, and I can't have refined sugar.

    I'm hungry. Also, maternity pants.

  • @FutureMrsCAF Amazon! (where I also got thanksgiving themed lawn flamingos...)

also: maternity pants should be aka holiday eating pants. def super excited for that.
  • My SIL hosts pretty much every year and we drive down for about a week to visit.  I'll be helping with the cooking, but the menu is up to her.  She also keeps a kosher kitchen, so I can't bring anything I make in my kitchen.  She usually does 3-4 different pies, turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, a green salad, some kind of cooked green veggie (changes year to year), gravy, and cranberry sauce.

We got one pie pumpkin at the pumpkin patch so I'll be making a pie at our house at some point, but it might be after Thanksgiving.

  • We will not be able to travel to see family for TG, but we have a few friends that are staying as well and will cook a TG feast together. We haven't planned it out yet, but I'd like to cook the turkey, sweet potatos, Home made-Cranberry sauce and maybe a casserole. We will have way too much for 4 ppl!
I am also excited that I will be over 12 weeks pregnant and we will probably share the news with such friends!

I'm not a turkey fan, so I'm looking forward to all the sides (and carbs) too! And now I'm craving stuffing! Yum!

  • Since we will most likely be traveling for Thanksgiving, I probably won't be preparing much. However, I am most looking forward to turkey, bread rolls, stuffing and green bean casserole smothered in the good stuff - gravy. I will also bring a couple of pies with us to share, and pumpkin pie is my absolute favorite. So yeah, I guess you could say I'm puurrtttyyy excited about it.
  • Here's my list ladies:
    Turkey
    Stuffing
    Mashed potatoes w/ gravy
    Cran sauce
    Rolls
    Green bean casserole
    Corn bread pudding
Pumpkin pie w/ ice cream and whipped cream
    Caramelized carrots
    Apple cider

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things. Having t day at my moms house and everyone has to bring something. Dh and I are contributing stuffing, so I've been looking up recipes all week. I just refuse to bring boxed stuffing since I figured we only have to do one thing so we might all well try to do it properly. So if anyone has an amazing stuffing recipe I'd LOVE to get my mits on it!

@WinniethePoohsPants My favorite is a Food network recipe, I believe it was Alton Browns (maybe). My chef friend loved it, so I felt very proud. I will try to find it-it is so good!

  • We are headed to my MIL/FIL house.  We are bringing a turkey, a smoker (something new for us, but DH is SO excited to smoke a turkey for everybody... hopefully it turns out!) and some rolls.  His mom will make enough food to feed a small country, as always.  But, I honestly don't want any of it right now.  No MS, just lack of appetite.  Hopefully that changes before Turkey Day!

  • Im excited because we will be announcing the pregnancy at Thanksgiving. And all the food but mashed potatoes are my favorite!
  • We'll be traveling, so I'll probably bake a cake or something.  This will be the time that we announce to the family about baby #2.

I always feast at Thanksgiving.  This year shouldn't be any different.

  • Every year my husband makes bourbon mashed sweet potatoes - I never have the heart to tell him that I think they're disgusting. This year, I can just tell him, "Sorry honey! Don't want to risk eating anything with bourbon in it." Talk about the best cop out ever.
  • Oh mylanta, my dad makes the BEST stuffing in the world. It's almost the only thing I eat on TDay, just because it's THAT good.
  • Stuffing with sausage and sage is calling to me! And these mashed potatoes my aunt makes that have cream cheese in them so they are extra creamy and smooth and delicious and NOM NOM NOM (lapses into Thanksgiving dreamland fantasy).

I gave birth to my DS the morning before Thanksgiving and felt so bad for the cheerful nurses who were stuck taking care of me and my newborn DS on Thanksgiving day :-(
Maybe you can reschedule with your DH and family to have it the day before or the day after??

  • Sweet potato pie!!! And I want to eat all the stuffing. But I always want to eat all the stuffing, so that's nothing new. Unfortunately, I will likely still be suffering from MS, so this is all likely just a dream.

Aw. But I'm sure they felt so honored to be able to help you bring life into the world that special day! I'm always blessed in some way or another on holidays that I have to work (at least Christmas or thanksgiving every year.. Usually we rotate which one).. It's not fun being away from family on these days but it's meaningful to me to be able to love on someone else who may feel equally sad (if not more) that they are sick during the holidays. Especially in my unit. I work critical care so my patients can be extremely sick and facing horrible decisions.

That being said, I work the day before and day after haha. But I'm off the weekend following thanksgiving so maybe we will do something small that weekend. I'm ok with leftovers.. Actually my all day nausea today has got me more ok with working thanksgiving just because the food sounds repulsive right now lol

  • I am hosting Thanksgiving this year as I did last but it is just my parents so if I don't start feeling better my mom is up for cooking duties or it is dinner for 4 from the Boston Market!
I love Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings (besides cranberry sauce.. no way!)

  • SIL in hosting this year and we have to travel 8 hours to get there so we aren't in on the preparation.
  • We do Thanksgiving at my parents' house. This year we will have 30 people (all from my mom's side) so there will be a lot of cooking. We have the usual southern menu- fried turkey and about 9 types of casseroles and salads. Hopefully since I'll be going into second tri I'm hoping to be able to eat more things.

2 angel babies to watch over us- bfp 3/16/13, c/p 3/27/13- bfp 6/27/13, c/p confirmed 7/4/13- We will always carry you in our hearts

  • My aunt's Thanksgiving dinner is my all time favorite meal. Hubby and I flip flop the holidays each year between my side and his so this year we will be with my family and I CANNOT wait! I'm just hoping my appetite returns by then. We will announce to my family that day so I'm hoping all goes well.
  • DH and I flip flop Thanksgiving each year, too. Which means this year we are at my MIL/FIL's house. My MIL is an amazing cook, but I'm going to miss my mom's stuffing and pumpkin pies. I think I'm going to ask her to save me some. I make country apples in the crock pot each year with oatmeal, brown sugar, and cranberries. It goes so well with the turkey or for a desert... Wish I had a giant bowl of them right now!

We alternate holidays as well. and I am sad that Thanksgiving is with DH's side this year because my family's stuffing is my favorite. We literally fight over it. This year we are driving 4 hours to visit DH's grandfather and aunt/uncle/cousins. We're staying in a little suite/hotel room thing, so it should be interesting. Grandpa is getting up there though and his health hasn't been good, so I know it's important that we spend some time with him.

I am excited to eat all the foods! I need to make sure not to overeat though and make myself uncomfortable. We are going to announce on Thanksgiving as well so it should be fun.
