We haven't purchased anything specifically for the new baby yet. We've upgraded car seats for our 4 year old and 2 year old, and my husband is working on building a bunk bed set for them. My mom bought a Sophie giraffe teething ring for the new baby already since both of its siblings had one. This is our third child, so we have most things and are waiting until we find out the gender in a few weeks to see what clothes and other items we may need.
@thaisac1 I wish I still had FTM enthusiasm with baby shopping! I gave away literally everything I had from DS so I definitely need a few things, but the difference this time around is I realize how much I actually NEED versus what I thought I 'needed' the first time around. It's a bit more relaxing but definitely not as fun! Lol

Im curious, what are some of the things you thought you needed but didnt really use so arent going to get this time around? I get so overwhelmed, i start to go down the baby isle, then am just like nope, dont know where to begin just too many choices so i get stressed out.

IMO - Needs: car seat, safe place to sleep (crib/pack n play), 2 onesies per day between loads of laundry (14 if you do laundry weekly, etc), a couple sleepers, probably a swaddle blanket or two. Bath sponge (foam mat to lay them on in the sink/tub) and baby soap. Burp rags, Nipple pads/cream for you or bottles and formula if not breast feeding. Eventually bibs. Carrier comes between need and want for me - not totally necessary but SO nice.
Wants: swaddles (loved Halo and swaddleme), bonus cute outfits/ hooded towels etc, secondary place for baby to sit (bouncer/swing/rock n play), car seat mirror, eventual toys
Can be convenient but take up space: pack n play, play mat/gym, stroller
@mrstrax would you rather have a stroller or a carrier like a wrap? DH is dead set on a travel system stroller (which I really, really hate the idea of) and I'm very intrigued by the idea of babywearing. I don't like pushing strollers and we don't go out a whole lot to places where a stroller would be necessary right away like zoos amor carnivals. That may change, but I'm hoping by that time LO is big enough for an umbrella stroller.

I would still get a stroller, or maybe just start with a snap and go off craigslist and then get an umbrella and baby is big enough. I own 3 ring slings and a lillebaby so I def like baby wearing but I love my stroller for things like the mall etc because even if I'm wearing DS I can put my purse (diaper bag) down etc

See, I would say a stroller, or at least a snap and go, is a need. It's pretty subjective. But the bare minimum needs are crib or other place for baby to sleep, diapers and wipes, sleepers/a few outfits, formula or breastfeeding stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions, its overwhelming how many baby things there are out there. This will be my first kiddo and unfortunately im not anticipating having a baby shower, i know a few family members will buy us some things, but im sure all the big items and most of the smaller things will be up to me to get, so i dont wanna go to crazy buying a bunch of extra stuff i wont really need.
My suggestion is read a lot of blog type suggestions, buy what you think will suit your lifestyle, and then keep receipts for everything!! Keep as much in the box as you can. Tip: tape the receipt to the item to make for easy returning.
I would start out with more minimal stuff and buy as you need. If you'd like to post a current list of what you think you want to register for we can let you know or opinions for sure. You can start a registry thread if you'd like.

@BrittnyS10 I think that for moms in general, so much is personal preference, so until you find what you like, it can be hard. DS was a picky kiddo and hated things like swings, bouncers, pacifiers, and strollers (blasphemy, I know) so I'm still up in the air one what to do in that department.
This time I plan to stick with what I consider to be the necessities (for me anyway) and then add on as I go - car seat, rock n' play, diapers/wipes, Always Infinity pads (for mom, the best), breast pads/nipple cream, some onesies/sleepers, J&J bedtime bath (the ultimate baby smell IMO), sink insert for bathing, and a sleep sack.
Things I didn't really need - baby specific towels/washcloths, shoes before walking age, 105847 blankets, full travel system, full crib bedding set with bumpers (all you really need is crib sheet/mattress protector and a sleep sack or something really), hats, Diaper genie, pack n play, Bumbo sear (speaking as an OT, these put babies in unfavorable positions and I wouldn't recommend them anyway), excessive car seat hanging toys. ^^ (Some other moms may say some of these things are must haves though.)
My personal favorites/go to's:
-Car seat - I prefer baby carrier style then switch to convertible down the line. Last one was a Chicco KeyFit 30. Unless something new and better has been released that really sways me, that's likely what I will stick with.
-Fisher Price Rock n' Play - This is my #1, go to, recommend to every mom I meet, baby gear item. I slept DS in it for the first few months when he wasn't sleeping with me (I lean toward co-sleeping during first few months at least). Crib wasn't necessary for us until later on technically but we will be putting one in the nursery now that we have a house with a room for baby by itself.
-Diaper bag - I plan of using a backpack of some type for easy transport. I had a regular one first time around and it was a real hassle for me.
-Diapers/wipes - I like Pampers Swaddlers sensitive for NB-2 and their wipes, then Target brand generics later on and their wipes in the purple container.
Random comment but car seat toys are actually unsafe and should not be used ever while the carseat is in the car. If you want them while baby is in the stroller or in the car seat while grocery shopping that's fine, but remember to remove them every single time when back in the car. Or just don't get them lol!
Edited to add: I'm specifically talking about the kind that hook onto the handle of the carseat. If you want to toss a plush stuffed animal or a Sophie the giraffe into the car seat with baby that's fine!

DD and I vastly prefer the Ergo (I also have a cheap mei tai, but it's not as comfy now that she's bigger), but DH likes the stroller if he takes her out. We were given a third hand baby trend that our car seat could snap into, but we pretty much only use it now that we walk for groceries/Target runs. Anything involving driving or just walking to the park gets the carrier. I'm not planning on getting a double at this point - I'll wear #2 and push DD when needed.
Also, ditto to @NachosandPeaches - buy minimally and borrow what you can, especially until you know what your LO likes. We got a bouncer instead of a swing... and then DD hated the bouncer and loved the swing we borrowed. As tempting as it is to have the nursery look like a Pottery Barn catalog with the toys all laid out and everything, wait to open as many boxes as you can. That way if you meet someone in a Mom group that you can borrow from you can return for more diapers It's really nice to have some friends with kiddos ~6 months older and younger than yours that you can pass things to and from. Kid stuff can take so much space!
@cmjenkies my older sister told me the same thing for diapers! She used pampers swaddlers and then switched to target brand. She swears by them!
Every baby fits diapers differently. Even some twins will require different brands at times. DS started in pamper bc of the hospital and then at a month or so would get a blow out Every. Single. Time. Switched to huggies and honest and he was fine. Many babies are the opposite. Many Babies leak through everything. Many babies can use any brand. The key is just don't open the bags and boxes until you need to and know what works!

@NachosAndPeaches very true - I was just saying what I liked in particular for DS. Hopefully it stays that way for the next one! I found that with blow outs (for us anyway) that it was more due to improper sizing than the brand. DS was a chunker butt. I too use that receipt strategy though just in case!
@NachosAndPeaches I'm aware, I just thought it was interesting that I saw that after just talking with my sister about diaper brands. She's used that combo with all 3 of her babies.
K wasn't sure if you were aware. Hard to follow what's been written where etc!
@cmjenkies we were in size 1 pampers when the blowouts happened and then size 1 huggies and no blowouts. It was so weird!!!! I would even hold the two diapers right next to each other and they looked identical, but It was like clockwork. Pampers on him would cause a tiny poo to explode and huggies would contain a giant massive mess! There was a very happy family with donated diapers from the giant box I had opened lol

Seriously, garage sale sights!!!! I wish I had known about them (especially the nice brand clothing ones) on fb during my pregnancy.

@NachosAndPeaches I've heard similar things from other moms too - babies are so weird! Meanwhile I tried to switch brands once because I thought it was a brand thing, but the same thing happened - it just ended up being size for us instead.
Yeah it's one of those things I seriously don't get because I've done diaper comparisons and they seriously seem identical. Don't get it at all! But I'm glad it led us to use honest bc my goodness those prints are adorable.

Okay so when DS was a baby Huggies came out with blue jean diapers.. and oh my lord. **luv** Those rolls..

@geminioftwo This is me! I have some clothes DS never even wore. Instagram hipster toddler boutiques are my weakness along with vintage style kicks. My toddler has 8 pair of shoes *SMH*. DH is almost thankful it's not a girl this time around. He knew it would be trouble.
@goldsgirl9 I hear yea. Racheltorags? haha I think we have every romper lol And those shoes!!! we have that problem too...hey at least we can re-use them.

We were so overwhelmed in the baby stores!!!!! So much stuff we need!
