The moment I've been dreading has arrived. Waiting to be checked for dilation. :(

update: That wasn't so bad. mostly weird.  2 cm dilated!
    :!!
Yay! Glad it wasn't too bad. My second time wasn't as bad as the first. For one, it was a different doc, and two, I was bracing myself for the worst! He could tell I was dreading it and kept asking if I was ok while he was checking. Two whole CM??? How far along are you? He considered me still closed yesterday at 37W2D but said I was about 70% effaced. Also mentioned baby's head was very low. Good luck!

Thanks, I'm 38 weeks today. I kept making a fuss about it for the past month so we avoided checking until today because she just NEEDED to know if I was dilated.
She checked super quick because she knew I was uncomfortable with the whole process.  Didn't mention effacement but said she could feel the baby's head.  :-bd

  • As others have said, you can walk around dilated for weeks without going into full on labor. My OB's response at my 37 week appointment was "We didn't check your cervix yet, did we? No? Have you been having contractions, lost your mucus plug, anything different? No... Well let's forget it then until next week. No sense in checking if nothing is going on there". I love my OB. How about I just give a buzz when I'm in labor. I hated the checks with DS. I had bad cramping and light bleeding after each check.
  • 37 w 5 d - 1 cm dilated & a soft cervix. I'm planning on staying pregnant another week... But who knows
  • 35+4 Baby is head down and I'm 3cm and 70% effaced. My doc said I could stay that way for awhile.
  • I was 1cm and 50% last week and today when they checked but midwife said things could start happening at any point now. It sure is weird just waiting.... At 39w3days I'm a little impatient!
  • 37 weeks 2 days and completely closed >:P
  • 37 weeks today and "almost 3 cm" and 70% effaced. Just waiting!
  • This is an awkward question but I'm curious. Those of you who are dilated- have you already lost your mucus plug too? With as much pressure as I've been feeling, I think I may be dilated but I haven't lost my mucus plug yet so idk.

I never lost my mucus plug with my first (that i know if anyways). I haven't lost it yet with this one either and I am dilated.

last I knew, I was 2cm dilated and have not noticed anything come out. Haven't even felt a BH contraction.
  • My doctor checked me yesterday and said I didn't have a mucous plug that it's already been out if i did have one and I'm 2cm dilated . I think it's different for everyday .

I was 2cm and 75% effaced on Monday.  I have been having fairly intense contractions for a couple of weeks now and have not noticed my mucus plug at all.  Doctor keeps asking too.

I've been losing pieces of mine since 31 weeks which is also when I started dilating.

You could be losing it slowly. It comes out just like thicker discharge.

38w 4d and stuck at "barely" 1cm since last week. Was hoping for a little progress since I also found out today my practice induces at 41w :(
  • 39w1d and nothing ... tons of pressure + braxton hicks and even false labor for weeks. I'm convinced I'm not going to dilate until I'm in active labor!

Last check I was 2cm and 50% and I... probably lost it?  It was the reason for the check.  I bled a little and had a LOT of thick mucus discharge the weeks before and after the bleed.  Nurses at L&D seemed to think my bleeding was bloody show, and no one (L&D nurses or my OB who checked me later when the spotting didn't stop for a few days) could find another reason for the bleed, so I guess that's what it was.  But to my understanding, it doesn't mean much of anything.  It can grow back, even (though I don't know if it can once you're dilated?  I was told to avoid sexitimes from now on since without it I could be open to possible infection)
  • Checked today at 38w4d and zero progression. Baby hasn't even dropped! I have a feeling this babe is going to be fashionably late.
  • FTM, 37w2d today.  At my 36 week appt, I wasn't given any numbers... just told that I wasn't dilated at all but my cervix was thinning out.

At my 37 week appt yesterday, I was checked again and told that the previous week I was 50% effaced with 0 dilation.  She said the cervix has continued to thin out so I am even more than 50% effaced now but still without any dilation.

I wasn't given a number as far as where the baby's head is related to the pelvis, however the doc informed me both times that she could feel the head really well so he is obviously dropping slowly.

You certainly cannot tell he's dropping by the look of my bump, though... he appears to be really high still.  I have a feeling he's just a huge baby which is why his head can be so low and his butt + legs can be so high at the same time.

Good luck to everyone and have wonderful weekends!
  • I'm seeing a midwife at a birth center and they only check if you want to. She told me if she checks, she won't give me a number because it will drive you insane since it really doesn't mean anything. I decided I would wait until after my due date (November 14) to get checked. By then I will probably be like okay let's see if this is going anywhere lol
  • Haha it's actually driving me crazy not knowing. I know it doesn't necessarily mean anything if I'm dilated but I'm really curious. I was worried I would be disappointed because I haven't seen my mucus plug yet but it looks like that's not necessarily a sign. I may still be disappointed but we'll see! I'm at the doctor now waiting for a sonogram, then I get to have a gbs swab and hopefully find out if LO has made any progress
  • Sadly no dilation. But she said my cervix is nice and soft so that's good. It's nice to know (and nice to know dilation doesn't necessarily mean anything!)
  • 37 2/7...dilated to a 1 and softening. Pretty excited since I was barely a 1 at 39 weeks with my DD.
  • I am 4 cm and 80% effaced at 38 weeks and 2 days... still no active labor though...
  • 39w1d and nothing ... tons of pressure + braxton hicks and even false labor for weeks. I'm convinced I'm not going to dilate until I'm in active labor!
This. At my 38w6d appointment today I was still completely closed...but I've been feeling a lot of pressure and cramping for the last 4 or 5 days. Silly body and your mixed signals!
  • At 39 weeks 3 cm dilated \:D/ Dr. Said He could send me to the hospital if I wanted to but ehh I'll just wait some more. Got an appointment for friday just to make sure water is still good.
  • Had my 38w appointment at 38w3d.  I'm about 2cm dilated, 75% effaced and -1 station.  DH asked what that meant and I told him "I'm still pregnant".  Truly ladies, don't get hung up on numbers.  You can walk around dilated and effaced for weeks and still end up being induced or you could show little to no signs of dilation and effacement and go into labor at a moment's notice.  The good news is that pregnancy does have an end date, even if it is unknown.
  • Due Thursday and had my 40 week apt today. STILL CLOSED. STILL 60% EFFACED. This LO does not want to be delivered. The doctor scheduled me for an induction Friday early morning because she is already a big baby and does not want to take a chance of her getting bigger and my body not going into labor any time soon.
  • 38 weeks tomorrow... a finger tip dilated but as the doctor said nothing really going on down there

  • I was 1 whole CM dilated at my appt yesterday (38W2D)! Last week, the doc said I was 70% effaced; this week he just said I'm "still thinning" but no percentage. I know none of this matters that much, but it's exciting to know that my body is getting started. My docs seem fine w me getting to 39 weeks and inducing whenever I want after that. Baby is supposed to be on the larger side but not quite large enough to need a c-section. I'm afraid though that if I go over my due date, he will be too large. I can't believe he is almost here! Good luck to everyone!
