? for BF moms who add a formula supplement

Hi ladies - I also posted this on 0-6 so I apologize if this is a second read for anyone.  We had DD's 4 month check-up earlier this week and her weight gain dropped off a little.  I talked to our ped about my fear that my milk supply is starting to drop off.  He suggested pumping for a few days to see how much I am producing at each feeding - so I have started doing that.  He also suggested giving DD a formula supplement once or twice a day to help her put on some weight.  We tried giving her Similac Advance two times now and both times she makes a face like she is smelling something really bad (which is actually pretty funny) and then she won't drink from the bottle.  Has anyone else run into this - if so, do you have any suggestions for ideas we could try?  TIA ladies!

Re: ? for BF moms who add a formula supplement

  • DS was a preemie, so we put a small amount of formula in every bottle of breastmilk to increase the calories (I think we did 1/2 teaspoon per 3oz). ?Did the pedi say anything about that or was the pedi saying to do a bottle of formula instead of breastmilk? ?Putting the formula in the breastmilk may make it not taste so "weird" to your DC. ? ?We used a formula specific for preemies trying to gain weight so I'm not sure if that would work for you or not. ?But he's been gaining well and we're only putting it in one bottle per day now. ?The one bad thing--if you put formula in a breastmilk bottle, you only have about an hour to use it once it's heated up. ?

  • My son gets 2-3 ounces of Enfamil Gentlease at his 9pm feeding, otherwise he only gets BM.  He does make a face like "hey mom, this is different", but I think it is more the bottle, and less the taste of formula.  Anyway, I basically just keep teasing him with the bottle nipple.  It can take a few minutes sometimes, but then he gives in.  He does the same thing with the pacifier.  I don't know if that helps, but we do it every single night!  My son is 3 months, BTW!
