Washing baby clothes

Tonight I started washing the baby clothes and was reading the tags. Most of the footed pajama sleepers say to turn inside out to wash. Anyone have any clue WHY this would be necessary?? It seems like a really silly waste of time, but maybe there's something I'm missing...

Also, how much tape, stickers and plastic tags are really needed for baby clothes?! Seriously Batman! It's crazy how long it took me just to unpackage all the clothes!!

Re: Washing baby clothes

  • I always thought it had something to do with the flame retardant material. I could be wrong.
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't turn DD's pajamas inside out.

  • I don't turn my son's inside out and they're still in great condition. I don't remember ever reading that on any of his though.
  • So many tags!!! I don't remember this with my sons clothes, but my mom and I were getting the little girls clothes ready to be washed yesterday, and we could not believe the amount of tags. And I don't turn anything inside out...you will have your hands full and that is the last thing you need to worry about.
  • Do they have rubber grips on the bottom or decorations on the front? I have see that on other things that have buttons, zippers or snaps or pieces of non-cotton embellishments.

What about the little tags on socks. Those are the worst. There are so many of them, especially if they come in a multi-pack.

    The socks were the worst!
  • I always wash clothes inside out that I want to keep looking new so I'm used to flipping a lot of things. I'm also a bit OCD about putting delicates in lingerie bags, etc.
I found flipping the onesies and footed pajama sleepers inside out not so bad because it gave me a double check to make sure I got the all the plastic from the tag holder off and gave me the opportunity to cut out the multiple tags inside (I just wash everything on delicate)....for things needing special care I've always just written a list in a little book of the description of the item and care instructions so I can de-tag. I keep it in a drawer in my laundry room.
Seriously though, I felt like it took me 10 minutes to get 6 pairs of socks off that darn little cardboard thing and there were still little plastic pieces everywhere :-w
After I was done washing I had to hang it all back up anyway (I prefer hanging clothes over putting them in drawers so I can see what I have) so it wasn't a big deal. Three tiny loads of darks, pinks and whites did literally take me a day and that was just newborn through 0-3.
  • I always thought you turn them inside out because it makes the soft fabrics stay soft and they down wear down as quickly when washed
  • I think it has something to do with appearance, the clothes fade less, or a print doesn't wear/stretch as much. Also as pp said, embellishments like bows, etc won't come off. I am WAY too lazy to even think about doing this, but then I'm also buying mostly second hand, so I'm not that concerned.
  • I don't remember ever reading on tags to turn items inside out. With the age DS is there's usually food on everything, when he was younger there was spit up and drool, and it wouldn't come out if I washed things inside out. I do, however, wash everything on delicate to help it last longer.
  • Well, then I'm not gonna worry about turning them inside out then! The 0-3 month clothes will probably be worn once or twice, so I'm not worried about them fading or whatever.
  • Also with footy pjs make sure you're check inside the feet part for any long strings that could get wrapped around their toes! My daughters dad almost lost his big toe when he was a baby cause a loose string wrapped around it.
  • Are you washing with any special detergent? I tend to use tide (the type without dyes or chemicals) already for sensitive skin. My DH seems to think we need to buy a special baby detergent.
  • I hate the tags on every freaking baby wash cloth! The tags are like 1/4 the size of the tiny cloths and all 20 of them have one!

  • @rzaremba I use "free and clear" and will continue to use that with baby.
  • Baby sock tags were insane...I took out 6 or so plastic tags per package and realized after washing them, I still missed some. the only things I typically wash inside out is dark pants because it is supposed to make them fade less. I use way to many delicate bags for everything else.
  • Thank you for this thread! My husband and I are "lazy washers". We just throw everything in to the wash and it always comes out fine lol. Now I know to turn her little jammies inside out!

Also, the string around the toe is terrifying! Thanks for the tip!

I actually use 7th generation its as natural as you can get and price comparable to tide, but cheaper than the "baby". Detegent which i think is a rip off
  • I use tide free and clear and just skip the fabric softener sheets in the dryer.
  • I like all free and clear. Its what I use for our clothes and what I will use for the baby. Dreft smells horrible and is way over priced!
  • We just use All Free and Clear. It's what we use on our own clothes as well and since baby will be up against our clothes/around our stuff all the time anyway we've been told to just use what we use. No fabric softeners though.
  • Okay, another stupid question. I'm using All Free and Clear to wash everything, but what about the Bounce dryer sheets?? Are those okay to use?
  • Those plastic tags are ridiculous! They're so tight on the socks I ended up snagging one. My sister helped me with tags and did one load for me (she has a 1yo and a 2 yo, so basically super mom) and she didn't bother turning anything inside out. I don't think it's a big deal. We're using all free and clear on delicate.

I actually googled this earlier. Apparently fabric softener is not recommended because it ruins the flame retarded aspect of the clothes, plus it could affect the baby's sensitive skin.
  • Anyone else use honest company detergent? That is what husband and I use and I had planned on using for baby clothes as well.
  • @ssn109 & @BP1979 I don't use any fabric softners because they aren't recommended for so many types of fabrics. Fabric softners are really bad for athletic clothing or technical gear too. I have used "free and clear" for years because of my allergies and I am not about to add the scent from fabric softners back to our clothes either.
  • I have two long haired cats so I normally wash all my clothes and my husband's clothes inside out! Any hairs then seem to stay off my blacks! I usually just flip them inside out before putting them in the laundry basket. Makes it easier when it is actually time to do laundry!
  • There is a GREAT deal on amazon mom/prime:

    SEVGEN50D – 50% off diapers

    SEVGEN50W – 50% off wipes

    SEVGEN50H – 50% off household products

-I just ordered a case of the free and clear wipes and the 4x ultra free and clear laundry detergent

  • I'm extremely sensitive to smells, and have sensitive skin, so I can't imagine what a poor baby would do with all the heavily scented dryer sheets, fabric softener, and detergent! I use SA-8, from my Amway business, and so far so good for me. Unscented and sensitive skin friendly!

I think if something sounds like it might be bad, go with your gut and don't do it....
  • We use free and clear detergents and fabric softener. I personally don't see the point in using this on my clothes and not my LO's
  • @yankeebabeme Where did you find out about the amazon codes? I don't think I am getting these notices and I want to know where to look for the sales!
