Re: Baby names !

  • @elasticheart13 I prefer the ring of Mustapha Xander, plus Benjamin is more common here. Not sure how it is in Sweeden, though. Plus, I prefer names that are uncommon but still pronounceable.

  • @AmadorRose yeah I agree, Benjamin is so common here as well. His initials will be MXAK lol. I like the meaning of Xander better as well, "defender of people". :) so excited now to be having a boy lol.

  • @elasticheart13 I like Xander. Actually thought about using that as a first name but DH said no. Plus I think Mustapha Xander has a ring to it that Mustapha Benjamin doesn't.

Yeah when I say the name out loud it sounds better with Xander. And I love Alexandria Mae for a girl. Very beautiful name :)

Awe thank you! I keep going back and forth between that and Corinna Mae. It seems like I like one of them one week and the other the next. Ahhh why is it so hard!? Lol Edit because I can't type!

  • Mostly, this thread was read for my entertainment. We don't share our name choices before the baby's birth because I don't care what others think. We do the resume test, initial test, and rhyming game before solidifying our choice.

Working in education for 10 years give me an opinon on 95% of these name choices anyways. I will say I see my 4th and 5th grade students with unique names struggle with reteaching staff how to pronounce their name each year. Also, I'm a big fan of calling your kid by his or her first name...saves time and confusion in school.

With that said, we chose Harlan for our son, and didn't pick that for sure until he was born. So we will pick something fantastic to go with that for kid #2.

I honestly don't think it's *that* hard to tell the teacher how to pronounce your name or that you go by a nickname... unless your name is SUPER hard to pronounce, a lot of syllables, etc. I'm also a teacher. I don't think going by a nickname is a big deal... but I do wonder sometimes why people want their kids to go by their middle names. Like if that's what you wanted the name to be, then why didn't you make that the name?

  • I really like the names Emma and Olivia but I feel like I can't use them since they're so popular right now. Boo.

We're leaning towards Grace. I know it's in the top 20 I think but I figure it's better than the #1 and #2 names.
  • With Emma have you thought of using a longer name and then calling her Emma? Then her actual name may not be as popular but you can call her by the name you like until she's old enough to decide what she wants to be called.

I don't know. When I was teaching I had some pretty hard names. I felt bad for one boy it took me about two weeks to get his name right. Nicarious. I pronounce it the way it was spelled using the C-A-R as car but apparently it was pronounced care. I felt really bad that I kept tripping over his name (especially since I'm normally pretty good with names) and he got pretty annoyed with me.
  • We thought this baby was a boy, so we were not prepared to name another girl. Which is 1,000 times harder IMO. Currently our list is: Sadie, Margot, Sydney, Olivia (which I want to just take off b/c it's too popular), Sophie, Sabrina and Annie. This will be a sister to Lucy. Naming a kid is hard
  • @pinottoparenthood I'm thinking how one of our kids has to tell at least 12 adults at the beginning of the year, each year, how to pronounce his or her name. And some teachers (like art, PE, etc.) only see kids on a 6 day rotation. Seeing 450 kids every 6 days can make it difficult to remember how to pronounce a name.

@jasmineahenderson Yes. I hate it when a kid has to correct me, again, but when I have 450 names to remember it's hard.

And our district is split differently...we are an intermediate center so I only have kids for two years and they move on. I think it would be easier in a K-5 school.

I write the pronunciation down on my roster/seating chart, and after a few days ,I've got it down. I'm learning all their names anyway. It's honestly not that hard... again, unless the name is super ridiculous.

This was me when I was younger. My name is Kyle. If it were Kylie. It would be spelled that way. It's not even a super youneek name for a girl, but as an awkward preteen, having to explain your name in the first day of school in front of the whole class is unpleasant.

We should be finding out the sex today at our elective u/s, but if it's another girl, I'm really leaning towards Coralyn or Corinne. I'm thinking that Coralyn might be too close to the book character from Coraline.
If you saw Coralyn, how would you pronounce it? Let lose. My feelings cannot be hurt haha

I would pronounce it Cora-Lynn not coraline. I like the Coraline spelling better and Corinne is pretty too.
  • I think Coralyn or Coraline are ok (I liked that book as I recall). But I like Caroline and Carolyn a lot more. They might sound boring to you but last time I checked they aren't even that popular and are such cute names.
  • I love Coralyn - was debating Lynn as a middle name for our first choice of Cora (my great grandmothers name). If you were worried about pronunciation, you could add the extra "n" to make it a true combination of Cora and Lynn. Corinne kind of reminds me of the countertops.

My husband wants to name her (if it is a her) Cori, but I was trying to find a "real" name that would make sense with Cori as a nickname. So, I was wanting it to be Cora-Lynn, but I'm not sure I love it.
  • I went to college with a girl named Corie. That was her full first name.

You don't like just Cori then? If you like it I don't see the need to look for a long version just because it sounds like it could be short for something. Lots of people have names like Cori. I know a Cori actually and it's not short for anything. I think any normal person would know how to pronounce Coralyn since it's like Carolyn but with an o but maybe I am overestimating people.
  • Well, I guess the Cori/Coralyn/Corinne debate is mute because it's a boy!

    Yay! Congratulations!

Thanks! I've always pictured myself as a boy mom. To be totally honest, I had some gender disappointment when we found out the our first was a girl. Now, I can't picture life without her! I'm thrilled to have 1 of each!
  • @K&Elizabeth why not just Cora? Beautiful name and less "unique".

    It's all yours!
  • I guess we will agree to disagree @pinottoparenthood because it's very hard for me. I also write down pronunciations but as the counselor, I only see the kids 7 times a year in class. The kiddos that I work with on a regular basis or in small group are easier to remember, but I like to use student names in commons areas too.

I also think pronouncing/remembering names comes easier for some than others. I don't tend to forget a face, but names escape me, and correct pronunciations are even worse for me.

All I'm saying is that ladies (and gentlemen), don't get mad when people mispronounce your kids name on the reg if it's unique. My first name is unique and has two different pronunciations, depending on where you live.
  • @Mailmans Baby Momma my name is not at all unique and is still pronounced incorrectly over half the time. There are just too many variations of Melissa, Alyssa, Alisa, Elise, etc.

But I think unique names have a higher chance of being mispronounced.

This is true. I definitely have a pronunciation test for all the names on my list, whether common or unique.
  • STILL trying to sway my husband away from Thomas Morgan to Thomas Frederick over here. Morgan was his grandfather, Frederick was his great uncle, but he's someone I actually got to know and really liked a lot (and who had no children, so has no one to carry on his name). Also I hate the name Morgan, especially for boys.

I was convinced this was a girl, so we're still getting used to the idea of a boy six weeks after finding out!

  • Eden Mary for a girl and Joel David for a boy :) I also recently started like the name Hudson for a boy as well.
  • @leahhollingsworth1 I like the name Eden for a girl. I also love Hudson :) I considered it as a first name, but now I'm going to use it as a mn, regardless of sex. It's kind of a nod to my parents as they were raised/met in the Hudson River valley.

Joel and David are two of my brothers' names! I never would have thought to put them together but I like it. :)

We won't find out the gender but want to have one boy name and one girl name picked out! We have a boy name already and with our first baby we were pretty set on mila Marie for our girl name and we ended up having a boy! Now I'm second guessing that name. Do you like:
Mila Marie or Juliet (or Juliette) Marie
My hesitancy with Juliet is the name being shortened to Julie and that's my moms name! I'm hesitant about mila just because it's a little different and not as traditional

    @Lmring20 I looooove Mila Marie!
  • We aren't finding out gender. I love surprises.

For a boy, we are doing Levi Paul. Paul is my maiden name.
For a girl, we have chosen McKenna. We are still debating on a middle. We are thinking McKenna Knowlton. It's my MIL's maiden name, and my DH's middle name. But I'm worried it's too much. Sometimes I think it sounds beautiful, and sometimes I'm like...what a mouthful. Opinions from people who don't know me please? Haha

@kaylap58 1. I LOVE Levi. It was on my list, but we already have an Eli (Elijah) so I think it sounds too matchy matchy.

The middle name does make it kind of a mouthful, BUT I think it has a nice family significance and if you're looking for a place to squeeze in something different/weird/sentimental then middle name is the place to do it. I say go for it!

DH and I have not even discussed names still really. I have ZERO clue where we are headed name-wise yet.
