Need a middle name that starts with a

Hey moms. I need help. My great grandmother asked me if I would consider using a middle name that starts with "A" to honor her late son. Our little boys name is going to be Jaxon. Im just so stuck on picking out a middle name as we already had one picked when she asked. Thanks. :)

  • What was her son's name? You might be able to try something with a similar sound or meaning. We did this with picking DD's name. We wanted to honor hubby's late grandmother but my mother has the same name. We chose one that sounds simular and the meaning fits what her personality was like. You could also look for names similar in sound or meaning, but starting with a, as the name you previously had picked out.

  • Jaxon Andrew is cute. You could also try the name boards for more suggestions :)

  • Not trying to be rude, but what's the difference between any name that starts with an A and a middle name that particularly starts with A?
  • I love the name "Ari" it's unique and Hebrew for "Lion"
  • Second for alexander
  • Not trying to be rude, but what's the difference between any name that starts with an A and a middle name that particularly starts with A?

Middle names are more commonly shorter than first names and tend to compliment the first name as opposed to a strong middle name and weaker first name that may not have a flowing sound to the name as a whole....
  • My husband has 2 middle names. You could always keep the one you had picked out and add a second middle name that starts with A. I know that the 2 middle names hasn't really been an issue for him, he usually uses the first one when filling out applications and what not.
  • Here's some that may flow nicely and to be too long:

    Arthur
    Arlo
    Abraham
    Abram
    Albert
    Andre
    Anthony

I also like the Alexander suggestion.

  • I'm curious too what the actual name was? We're also (as a pp mentioned) having 2 middle names ... My grandfather was very special to me and had an 'interesting' name (Irwin August). Our sons two middle names will be Anthony August ... No first name yet LOL. Anyway, just a thought!
  • How about Arthur? It flows nicely. And I agree, if you are set on the first name, please consider Jackson.

    According to what source?

Yeah i've heard that a lot of the time, the more opulent name that parents don't want to saddle their kids with but still really want to use tends to become the middle name. Not that it's a rule, per se, but that a lot of parents just tend to choose this route. Our daughter's traditional Chinese name will be her middle name, not her first, for example.

There are whole bunch of sources ( none that I definitely find academically credible) for middle names… I just didn't see anything that said what PP suggested were the rules for middle names.

  • Back to the actual subject, OP any thoughts yet? Just know the name you choose will be perfect for your LO in the long run.
The name for our 2nd LO was a tough one to settle on but now I couldn't imagine any other name ;)

I completely understand why some parents choose to do this. But it's definitely not a rule and it's not a fact. I would hate to see somebody on this board second-guess their middle name due to A possibly inaccurate blanket statement.

Our little guy's middle name is longer than his first but it still sounds good together and flows nicely!!!

Why don't we get back to the actual subject. OP, you can easily Google these names for yourself. Why don't you pick out a few and then put up a poll?
  • Do you dislike the A name of the person you're honouring? I like "behind the name" website's name trees you can see the traditional name in other languages or heritages. So if the name is from your Italian side of the family but your DH wants to consider Irish names to honour his side this will tell you what the translation would be from Italian to Irish (or whatever cultures you're considering). This also works great if you want to do a "junior" but a little less literally.

I ❤️ Irwin August!!!! Great name!

My son's middle name is Abner.
  • @GinnyBarrette Abner is a great name! Love it. I am a big fan of middle names with some history. We're actually throwing around the idea of August as the first name and having him go by Augie. It was actually my DH's idea but he's having cold feet on it now.
I figure regardless if it's first or middle he can still go by the nickname.
  • My vote is for Andrew. Simple and classic imo...OP picked one yet? I'd love to know what you decided on.
  • What about Jaxon Avery?

    I ❤️❤️❤️ You the most!!!
  • Sorry moms I've had a lot going on. But my great grandmother's late sons name was Alan. Which also happens to be my biological father's name. Im not sure if I want to use that name. We were going to do Edward after my hubby's grandfather. But now im stuck on what to do. I wanna do what she asked, but im just looking for ideas as to what flows nicely his Jaxon.
  • Honestly, I would just try to explain nicely that you already had a name picked out that you both live and ask if she would be OK with it if you save her request for the future chance you have another boy. My MIL made a lot of name requests and this is how we handled it with her. We had chosen DS's name before even becoming pregnant and really didn't want to change it or open the door to requests from other family members. This is your baby and it ultimately comes down to what you want the name to be.
  • Jaxon Alexander sounds nice I think :)
  • @Mother0fDragons ....that was the first thing that came to mind! Glad to see another Greys fan...sad there wasn't a new episode this week..my Thursday was emPty.
  • You could have two middle names? Your previous chosen one and another beginning with the letter 'a'. My son has two his name is Charlie Micheal James, Michael for my dad and James for his dad's dad, as far as 'a' names go you could have
    Aaron
    Arty
    Archie
    Arthur
    Andrew
    Anthony
    Aiden
    Allen
    Alex
    Alexander
    Ashton
    Ash
    Ashley
    Austin
    Ainsley
    Albert
    Alfie
    Alby
    Anton

  • I'm confused, what is the actual name of the person you are honoring and why not use it? Or did I miss that part?
