Baby Blues Already?

Our little one was born early at 37 weeks 4 days last night. Labor was super short (7hours vs the 24+ last time), but I've already noticed feeling sad. This is normally when I think about DD, who is with my in-laws (they are watching her while DH and I are at the hospital). It took me a few weeks to feel sad last time (I ended up with a mild form of PPD). I am breastfeeding, pumping, and I have to supplement with formula right now... new LO is hypoglycaemic. This makes me frustrated because I am a firm believer in breastfeeding, but to keep her sugars normal I HAVE to supplement (I only have bits of colostrum at the moment which is why I am pumping to help bring my milk in faster). I have had very little sleep (as new moms know too well). I also do tons of skin to skin.
I was wondering if it was too early to be feeling this way. Like I said it normally centres around DD, but when I think about it... it makes me sob.
Advice is appreciated.

Re: Baby Blues Already?

  • I think it's normal. I was emotional right after my baby was born as well. She's 12 days old now and it's getting better so chin up! But the first week was definitely the hardest and I even had a breakdown in the hospital bc I was so tired and exhausted from visitors and nurses coming in every 30 minutes. My advice is to go home as soon as they'll let you so you and baby can get more acquainted and you can be with your other little one. Also, breastfeeding in itself made me depressed but once my milk came in and she learned to latch that got better as well, it just takes time. Best of luck to you!

  • I believe that's normal, especially with the circumstances of your LO's burth. Hang in there!!

  • I think given all you're dealing with, it seems possible. It sounds like you're still at the hospital, so make sure you mention it to your pp nurse. They should be able to help and answer your questions. Take care of yourself mama :)

  • We are still at the hospital. LO's blood sugar levels looked like they were increasing, and we've just gotten news that they dipped below 2.6 again, so we have to go through the whole round of testing again. I don't understand. When the nurse told us I started crying and shaking, and this clearly bothered DH who isn't used to seeing me like this at all. Even typing it out makes me want to cry. My midwife won't be available until tomorrow (my 2nd and 3rd are on vacation, and she did 3 births Friday, one being ours at 10:30pm, and 2 yesterday).
  • I haven't cried this much in years. I'm so emotionally balanced it's borderline abnormal. But ever since I gave birth the waterworks are out of control. I struggled with breastfeeding a lot and it made me very anxious, fatigued, antsy. I believe it'll pass eventually. When she gives me a break I feel as strong as usual. I need to adjust to rolling with the punches because she is the one making all the decisions from now on.
