So sad -thoughts and prayers please.

I got my blood work back today and it doesn't sound very good. My HCG was fine but my progesterone was very low. It was 5.6 and it is supposed to be at least 10 or 11. Dr. Google is telling me that 99.8 of pregnancies end in miscarriage if the progesterone is less than 10 in first tri.

They are testing again on Monday, but it doesn't sound good. I'm heartbroken. I've been sitting in the car crying for a half hour because I don't want to go home and have DS see me so upset.

I don't have much hope. So sad. I can't even describe this feeling.

No, even though I asked for it. The doctor said at this point the progesterone could be a sign of something wrong with the pregnancy, not the cause of something wrong.

  • Seems very strange to me that your doctor wouldn't just give you the prescription??  I don't see the harm in taking it just in case!  For what it's worth, my progesterone level was a 7 when I was pregnant with my daughter.  I took supplements and she is 15 months old now.

    Good luck!!

I know, I don't really understand it either. I think she is assuming low progesterone = not viable. I'll probably call her again.

  • I am so sorry you are going through this! I am on progesterone but my dr. Warned me that it can support a pregnancy that is not meant to be...maybe that's why your dr. Doesn't want you on it?
  • I'm so sorry. However low progesterone does not mean the pregnancy isn't meant to be. Some people just naturally end up with low progesterone. They just need a little help is all. The doctor will then prescribe progesterone to take until you make it to the second semester. Then your body has the hang of things and you don't need it anymore.
I would absolutely get a second opinion!!
  • I don't know that my DR checked my progesterone. Is that a standard test?
  • I don't know but my ND always checks. She also checks my vitamin levels to make sure I'm not lacking or overdosing anything.... She's awesome. If yours doesn't want to check anything I would seriously consider getting a second opinion....
  • I'm so sorry. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
  • I'm very sorry you are going through this. T&Ps to you.

  • I would get a second opinion too. My doctor said he sees a lot of patients who come in for a second opinion and he finds something different than the first. It can't hurt to try.

Do you happen to be nursing DS? I am still nursing and my dr. Said that that can be a cause for low progesterone and would prescribe something if that's the case (waiting on results). I'm sure she aleardy went through this with you but it was just a thought.
  • This is so hard to go through. T&P!

I really don't know much about progesterone at all, but I just read another thread on here recently where a bunch of people talked about how they had low progesterone and then their pregnancy was fine...I don't want to be giving false hope or saying your doctor is wrong, but I do agree with others that it couldn't hurt to get a second opinion.

No, not nursing. I do have PCOS, which I think can cause low progesterone.

  • Update: called the on call doc (who was not pleased) and asked for progesterone. She said no and concurred with my doc that low progesterone is usually a symptom not a cause. She said in the vast majority of cases low progesterone is a sign of a non viable pregnancy. So I wait.

Wow. Though I guess I would be surprised if the on call doctor gave you a prescription when your regular doc wouldn't.
I meant a 2nd opinion at a completely different practice. I now have low progesterone even when I'm not pregnant, so it's not going to magically improve once I'm pregnant... Did you ever have progesterone checked before you got pregnant?
  • I think for your own peace of mind get a second opinion at a new place. I also don't understand why the on call doc wasn't "pleased" you called? You're going through something hard and needed to ask a legitimate question.

Thanks all. I will get a second opinion at a different place. I called the on call doc because I knew I'd feel terrible if I miscarried without ever pushing for progesterone. She wasn't pleased because she said it's not a reason to call the after hours line. I feel like they just want me to wait to miscarry.

@longhurrdontcurr I haven't had it checked when not pg.

    Thanks all for the support.

  • When I got pregnant with my middle child, I had to use an RE. They had EVERYONE use progesterone, just in case it would help their levels. Now mind you, an RE office publishes success rates to attract more clients. So they have motivation to prevent as many miscarriages as possible. Unfortunately, it seems that your OB feels it isn't worth it.

@cjt121413 I'm sor sorry you are struggling with your Drs and so angry at them for not giving you better care.

I have PCOS and don't provide enough progesterone on my own. It has no connection to the embryo's viability, only your body's ability to support and sustain implantation. What provides the natural progesterone is the sac that breaks off from the egg and the deteriorates. For instance, I did IVF so my body produces no progesterone since they took the eggs out. In order to keep the embryo growing (and it's doing just fine Bc that outer sac means nothing) I have to take progesterone in oil injections every night until week 11--when the fetus starts producing its own progesterone! Until week 11-12, there is zero reason to think low progesterone means low quality embryo as ladies noted above with their personal experience.

Caught early an provided with supplements, a low progesterone pg can go on to be normal, or it can end in miscarriage if the egg is not viable or you don't respond to progesterone supplements. But not giving you the med so you do miscarry, just earlier than you otherwise would, is ridiculous. I hope your call with another dr goes better and please do let them know it is an emergency, Bc it is. Not all des would react the way these ones have. Having such a rage attack on your behalf. Hugs and I hope that everything turns out ok for you!!!

Thank you so much for sharing. It is comforting that others get how I'm feeling. I will call another doc on Monday. I'll also call my endocrinologist (not RE) to see what she thinks.
