High BP/ false alarm

I have had a pretty perfect pregnancy. I went to my doctors appointment on Friday and my BP was high. I've always had a normal BP so he put me on bed rest and is having me back Monday morning to make sure it's not still high. So along with my BP I had sudden swollen hands and feet and a bad head ache that has been lingering since Monday. I forgot to mention to him about my headache so I called the office and they told me to go to a pharmacy to check my BP and if it's high go to l&d. Well it was 140/100 so to the hospital we went! I thought I was going to have to be induced and that I had preeclampsia. of course when we get there my blood pressure is down and everything is perfect. I'm just so stressed knowing about my BP being high I don't want anything to go wrong. Anyone else have sudden changes close to the end? They said that they would induce me if I wanted to but they talked us out of it. I'm only 1 cm dilated and they said it would be a long hard labor if they had to induce me when I'm not very progressed. My due date is Wednesday. I'm hoping I'm farther along on Monday and my BP is normal because I'm starting to go crazy not being able to do anything!! I want to walk this baby out!

Re: High BP/ false alarm

  • My blood pressure was that high at 37 weeks. I was induced with the result after four days being a c section. After birth my BP continued to rise and remain high. Advocate for yourself, the headaches and swollen feet and hands definitely COULD be related to the high BP. Don't want to mess around with that stuff...

I was induced for high BP two days before my due date. I wasn't dilated at all and my OB said it was likely going to take awhile. The on call OB also let me know I was in for the long haul and not to get discouraged.

I was admitted to the hospital at 8pm in the evening, cervidil inserted. Water was broken at 9am pitocin started at 10:30am and my little girl was here at 12:45pm.

Do what feels right for you. Not all induction stories are bad ;)
  • I had the same problem at 39 weeks, 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. Went in on Friday to be induced. Got 3 doses of cytotec which did the job I didn't even need pitocin. Started active labor at 7 am got an epidural at 11:45 and had her at 14:30. I really didn't want to go the induction route, but I'm so happy she's here and healthy.
  • While in labor my BP spiked all over the place, up to 155/104. However they then started taking the readings from the opposite arm and they were in the normal range. They couldn't explain it but it stayed that way all through my hospital stay.

I had a very similar story to yours. My BP went up a little after 36 weeks. It was borderline pre-e. So they did a urine test and bloodwork. Both came back fine. So I went back the following week and my BP was borderline again. So the same thing, bloodwork and urine. This time the urine had a slight creatinine/protein ratio that couldn't be calculated before. So they had me come in 2 days later to monitor my BP and do the bloodwork again. This time the protein ratio increased again but the bloodwork and BP were ok. They had me do the 24 hour urine catch. The got the results last Friday and I was induced Saturday morning. The protein in my urine had increased significantly. By that point I was 38 weeks. I had very little swelling, my BP was fine at home, no upper right stomach pain, changes in vision or extreme headaches. They feel like they caught the pre-e super early. And only because of the strange spikes in my BP. My BP was great, lower than usual during my entire induction and delivery. It is very weird. But, baby girl and I are doing great. The induction was not fun, I did give into the epidural, but even with all of that the delivery was awesome. My epi allowed me to relax so I dilatrd 6cm in about an hour and was able to push then. I had full use of my legs too. So I could use the squat bar and my legs as leverage.

On a side note, I went in at 3 cm and 50% effaced. I didn't really progress much (3 rounds of misoprostal and pitocin) until the broke my water. Then things moved really fast.

I hope you are ok! The earlier they catch pre-e the better. I'm glad you are getting monitored. I didn't have to have any meds during or after labor. I hope everything goes ok for you!

Oh!! Exciting! Good luck! I'm sure you are anxious to meet your little one! I hope it goes fast for you too, even if it doesn't (or at least doesn't feel like it is), once you have your baby in your arms, it all melts away.
  • I had pretty much the same story as @cbolton19. It disappointed me because I had no other issues the entire pregnancy and didn't want to be induced. But now I have my beautiful baby girl.
