  • @Monkeybutt80 other people happened. I read that in another comment- essentially the keepin up with the joneses mentality. "My ring was pretty but all my friends got bigger ones so I wanted to upgrade too"
I feel like it would be a slap in the face to the man who took his time to pick out a ring for me.
My dad gave my mom a 3 stone ring but it was after they had been married for several years.
  • This is inspired by a new comment in the engagement ring thread. I don't get the idea of an upgrade.
I am all for the idea of buying diamond rings/ jewelry for whatever reason after you get engaged/ married, but the idea of an "upgrade" is weird to me. Diamonds are pretty and if you want to get a big ring (and can afford it), go for it, but I feel like it's odd to replace the ring that represents the engagement and union of two people. It was obviously 'good enough' when people got engaged, so what happened during the marriage that all of a sudden it is no longer acceptable?

When I first married my ex-husband, all he could afford was a 1/4 carat marquis. After almost 18 years, I'd had 5 different wedding rings. We traded in the marquis for an invisible set princess cut, the mounting broke and couldn't be fixed, so I kept that one and got a three-stone bezel set. After that one, we found ,what we thought was a good deal, on a diamond at an auction that I put into another setting but it never looked right so I went back to the three-stone bezel. Then, I lost 50 pounds and the ring was too big and couldn't be sized down small enough so I got a 1ct with a halo and two bands. It wasn't just wanting to show off to my friends, he wanted me to have something bigger and nicer also.

"My ring was pretty but all my friends got bigger ones so I wanted to upgrade too" I feel like it would be a slap in the face to the man who took his time to pick out a ring for me. My dad gave my mom a 3 stone ring but it was after they had been married for several years.

my mom didn't upgrade her ring, but my dad got her a 25 year anniversary band and compared to her engagement ring aesthetically it looks a little goofy. Her engagement ring is just under a .25 carat and the anniversary band has 5 stones that are each about .20. it's not my place to have an opinion on her rings but part of me thinks if it was my finger I might switch out the stone but not the setting on my engagement ring just for aesthetic purposes.

I also convinced my DH to get me a moissanite instead of a diamond (they are a similar clear stone that is only a fraction less hard and they are more sparkly than a diamond and they don't cloud) because I have mammoth fingers and I didn't want it to look strange on my hand. my ring with a moissanite cost around 1200 but with a diamond the same size would have been like 14k. In our world that is a car.

That's another good unpopular opinion-I'm never ashamed or hesitate to tell people "it's that big because it's not a real diamond" I like educating people on the fact that this stone exists but people always say that I shouldn't tell anyone because they never would have known.

@dragonfly321 I know who you're talking about, is it really a surprise she would have that opinion? Anyways I agree with you girls. My H took the time out to choose a ring for me and picked it from his heart, I would never change that

    *Edit for spelling
  • @mamacastro oh damnit am I that transparent? ;;)
  • No I think that was obvious based on other comments in the past
  • I picked out my engagement ring, and demanded it not be a diamond. I love colored stones! Granted at the time I picked it I didn't know it would be used in a proposal, but ah well.

I don't want a diamond either. I found some gorgeous stones and setting on brilliant earth, but the problem is that I have tiny hands and all the stones are huge. I'm hoping he really listens and doesn't get a diamond, though.

  • @drillsergeantcat  It sounds like your new rings were because of issues with sizing and settings. Also, if someone's husband/SO wants to buy a new ring, that's a totally different scenario than demanding a larger diamond just to "upgrade" and to keep up with others' engagement ring size.

I agree. I just know that some people who know me IRL thought I was spoiled or whatnot for the changes.

I read half the the first twilight book because I was procrastinating studying for finals. Decided studying was more entertaining. Read the first 50 shades book for book pub and wanted to throw my kindle every 2 seconds. I JUST CAN'T!

I hate what Twilight did to Forks.

Bingo. Diamonds are pretty, but I always wanted an opal or aquamarine. I fell in love with a fairly little aquamarine ring we saw once. And that's what I've got. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I feel bad though, because people have asked him why I don't have a diamond or something "nicer." I picked it out, but I think people make assumptions and view him as cheap. Irritating.

I don't let my kid drink juice, not even watered down unless it is a special occasion. I never let her have period until she was around 18 months or so and the only reason shed tried it then was because a family member gave her some without my permission. She drinks water and gets milk at breakfast and dinner. I won't let my next baby have juice either. I don't judge or care when other parents give their kids juice but it's just not for my kids.
I could live on juice I think, haha. But since I've been pregnant it's just chugging water! Luckily my daughter drinks whatever we offer her.

No joke! And Port Angeles. I used to have to go up there every week for work and I got so sick of the sandwich boards on the sidewalk, "Come eat where Edward & Bella had their first date!" Made me gag every time I saw it.

My in laws think I'm such a snob. I'm like I have my reasons and it is my offspring. I could live off juice too, honestly lol. I've been craving orange juice like crazy this pregnancy lol. I sneak a glass when my daughter naps lol. No guilt lol
  • @kiek orange juice is the one I probably stay away from because it gives me such bad heart burn/burp for 3298743745 hours.

Awww my H got my rings at Brilliant Earth.  My engagement ring is a diamond, but it's pretty small because I'm prone to losing things. He got me a really pretty stone necklace from them, too.  Love their ethics.

I was just going to say this. I caved this weekend and got just a small orange juice from the gas station and was miserable for the rest of the day. Wasn't even close to worth it.

  • I've always hated the shows Seinfeld and Friends. I think they are both overrated, and I think people make too much of a big deal over Jennifer Aniston. Extreamly overrated actress with average looks at best.

Agree 100% about Seinfeld and Jennifer Aniston, but I loved Friends.

Noooooo!!!! How could you say that?! I don't care so much about Seinfeld but how can you not love Friends?! And I think Jennifer Anniston is smokin' and a great actress! She has hardly aged at all in the past 10 years. My husband says that he hates that show but whenever it's on I always catch him laughing.

My kid doesn't either, except I think when my parents give him some when he's at their house. And I don't care enough to fight them about it. We never ever ever buy juice, it's just not something we consume. I only drink milk, water, and hot chocolate. H pretty much only drinks water.

My UO is that I hate what Pinterest has become. I miss when I got on and I saw pins from my friends. Now it's all "Picked for You" or "Buy this Pin" or "Promoted" interspersed with a few of my friends pins.
I HATE THE NEW PINTEREST SUGGESTIONS!!! Ughhh it makes me seriously stabby. They're usually completely opposite of what I like.
Yes! I thought I was the only one! I always hit the x to opt out of them and then they show up in my feed a million times still. Damn you, Pinterest!

I have the same thing but there's a brand (I think Tropicana) that makes a low acid version. It tastes just as good but the heartburn isn't an issue :) I can always tell the difference because I get heartburn within a couple minutes of drinking regular Oj

Disagree!  I think Seinfeld is incredibly clever and revolutionized the way writers approached storytelling in sitcoms from that point forward.  I love that it bucked the conventional model and was a success in doing so.  Like it or not, there are probably at least a few sitcoms on television now that you enjoy that are influenced by Seinfeld.

I love Friends too, but I'll give you that it follows more stereotypical tropes and perhaps got a bit more hype than it deserved.

I don't think Jennifer Aniston's looks should be a factor in how successful or popular she is, period.  And since Friends, she's moved on to do some independent work like "The Good Girl" and "Cake" in which she really showed some range and depth.  I think she's a very talented actor.
Absolutely agree (except for Friends getting more hype than it deserves - it's amazing as well!). Larry David is awesome. I wish my ex didn't ruin Curb Your Enthusiasm for me :(
